I don't think that anybody really cares about BD, internal PSU (Mac Mini already has this....), USB3 will come with the upgrades, as will probably dual TB ports instead of 1xTB + 1xHDMI. FireWire will go, and potentially Ethernet too.

I have the 2011 Mac Mini, 16GB RAM (dual monitors) as a stand in machine for when I can afford something more powerful (it's way to underpowered for me), but it's a pretty good machine nevertheless.

no Ethernet means no mac.

I can't get good wifi due to my proximity to US Air Force bases and Navy Air Force Bases. When ever these are up in the air my wifi dies.

these types of radar planes and blimps are tested near my home a lot. they wreak havoc with wifi.

Well I could get the t-bolt to ethernet adapt if I have to. Waiting for the 2012 mini just like the rest of us.

Well, finally gave in and ordered a 2.5Ghz mini.

Refresh cycle was never a huge problem anyway as I rely on my BTO maxed out 2011 iMac for proper work, the mini is destined to be a HTPC/media downloading work horse, but something I can also use day to day if the iMac is busy.

Also ordered 8gig of ram and a Samsung 830, only 128GB though, I'm rather OCD with disk space, never go over 60-70GB on any of the main drives I own so should suit me fine :)

Looking forward to opening it up :D

I'm in a very similar boat. Use my MBP for most stuff, and only want a mini for the same uses as you!
Like you, I also am OCD with disc space and most of my stuff goes on my NAS anyway, hence I have a 120GB SSD already ready and waiting for the mini, still sealed in its plastic! Lol. Got it cheap so thought I'd hang on to it for the mini!
I'm after the server model (like to splash out so equipment lasts as long as possible) so will stick a 1TB drive in the second bay anyways.

The only thing holding me back is that I know as soon as I buy a Mac Mini they will release the newer model with USB3 and better GPU! It's just the way my luck goes!! Most of the time you get the newer model with higher specs, but around the same price. I'm hoping the same happens again, and soon! It will bug me if I buy now, only for the upgrade I've been waiting for to come along a month later at a similar price!

I think you are pretty safe with the current one. It will stay at least 5-8 months before a new one, and that one will either jump up in price and kick out the Pro because it becomes a really serious machine (which apple won't sell for 599), or it will become Micro because Ivy allows so. We won't see a quad mini i7 with Nvidia or Radeon below 900$. It would canibalize all other Macs to some extend. So if there comes a new 499-699 model, it will be dual core Ivy, with HD4000, smaller than the current one (it has quite some air in it) and pretty sealed up.

Then I click on links such as the one in this thread and shudder at the thought of having to use something other than a mac.

Oh good grief, what a drama queen. Your nob will not drop off if you have to use Windows you know.

Are you certain? I'm not willing to sacrifice my nob to find out. :p

That being said, knarzie has a point. Most of the malware on the Internet is Windows-focused. On my work-provided Windows computer, I have Google Chrome with script and Flash blockers installed. You can't be too careful.

I would get iStumbler to search for other Wi-fi routers that are interfering with your wireless so you could choose another channel.

Plus really consider going to a 5Ghz router and use the upper channels to get outside the 2.4 area.

I just wired the house with cat 6. I was changing my house from aluminum to copper wire. So I got a case of the might as wells. I can run upto 15 devices on my wired system . Next house I will try to keep your info in mind.

Thats pretty cool, you never know you might control your kitchen oven over LAN in the future.

I'm getting impatient waiting for this!!!!

Surely if it was just a CPU, GPU and USB update it would have come along by now?
Just hoping whatever comes along, I can still upgrade the HDD and RAM!

More and more I am thinking a new design.

no leaks no photos basically nothing.

Well lets wait another day.

There were 400 days between the Mac Mini 2010 and 2011 models, now 385 since the last, so maybe we have another 2 weeks to wait now...?

who knows, statistics will not answer this question (356 has been the average), and as said above there is a distinct lack of rumors right now about the Mini, although that may be due to distraction with all the excitement and hype about the new iphone and mini iPad?

It might be an issue that an up to date quad-core Mini server could potentially outperform the base Mac Pro in benchmarking, making it more of a joke than it is now.

I was thinking that if the mini stays completely the same on the outside than there would be a lack of rumors. They could just "silently" update all of the internals in the same casing as the 2011 mini.

Either way I am hoping for an update to the mini very soon. I was looking to buy one this month before school starts back up. The old MBP is a little sluggish these days.

I think they will be out by the end of July. I want one also for a HTPC hooked up to my tv. The HD4000 is much better then the 3000. I would hold off.

That's why I got the mid 2011 with the AMD Radeon HD 6630M GPU, because until Intel makes an integrated GPU that is as good as discrete graphics, its worth spending the $$$ on a better GPU.

Do you need a portable computer? If so, it might be worth getting a new MBP (especially the 15" which has great GPU options vs the 13") and an external monitor.

Do you guys thing they may give us some news in the SEP 12 event?
I mean if the iphone 5 is real, they won't just make an event for one product only.

I doubt that Apple will gives us any news. There is a chance they could release the new minis on September 12. There is also the chance that Apple will release the iPad mini and new iPods, so the iPhone won't be alone.:D

Is there a keynote for the 2011 mac mini, i saw on youtube steve introduce the first mac mini but no video of other mac mini introductions

No not really these days. The iPad handles my portable needs, even for school. I like the mini for its ports. I also have a lot of video I need to dump into a hard drive (old tapes) and the mini would be great for that and at a better price than a new MBP. I love my current MBP but it has seen a lot of rough use and it's showing it's age, especially with mountain lion installed. A new mini would save me a few bucks, satisfy all my school demands and also be a good PC to share with the lady. Just waiting for that update! Any day now I hope.

No. It was a silent refresh, as with every other Mac product in 2011.

Don't forget that the Mini was released about 6 months after the MBP in 2011, even though it shares the same components. We could see a similar delay this year and the MBP was only refreshed in June...

I'm tired of "waiting" for the '12 mini if there is one and the current '11 mini will work for me. Just like the Gen 1.1 ('06) version has worked..

But 2011 mini has USB 2.0 and all my external accessories are 2.0, so if i continue to "wait", I won't be able the 3.0 speed as my gear is 2.0 speed.

Also if apple drops FW800 from '12 mini then it'll more expense upfront than buying 1 cable that i can get for under $10 bucks @ frys .. likely 4x as much - TB to FW800 cable then FW800 to FW400 into FW hub ..

And the info from reviews the HD4K from HD3K is marginal for basic stuff - NO Gaming etc .. Net / movies / iTunes / iPhoto etc.. The option to upgrade above 2GB of ram sounds smashing since I've stuck @ 2GB of Ram / slowness / beach ball etc.. On the GPU side of things from 64MB to 288MB will be major jump for me..

So yeah the '11 mini will work for me fine for the next couple of years, just like my trusty Gen 1.1 version has ...

The main improvements will be the graphics. 4k is supposed to be 70% faster than 3k. Really, the supposed possible new base models will be of similar power to the current 2.5ghz mini.

Thanks!

No. I am correct. Need and want are two different things. Look it up. Need implies you have no other alternative and can not live without. Even if he has 4 USB3 drives, they can still run on USB2.0 can they not? Therefore it is a WANT instead of need for USB3.0.

Again. Want vs Need. Maybe it is obnoxious, but to actually say you need something is a little ridiculous when discussing computers is it not? I mean theoretically anyone can "get by" with an old Core2duo, but we WANT faster computers (I'd even say most could get buy on G4 and G5 computers with the exception of software that no longer run on those ancient boxes). Further, the s/he gave no reason why he "Needed" USB3, instead he just made a statement. The only thing that even currently utilizes USB3.0 right now is storage which again can either be run at USB2.0 speeds OR you can use thunderbolt storage.

Thanks paulrbeers,
