Is $329 an appropriate price?

$600!?!! unless it was unlocked...no one paid $600 for the 4s...it was $199, $299 or $399 for 16, 32, and 64 respectively.

The interesting thing I find about the backlash towards the the iPad Mini's price (and the price of Androids Tabs) is that no one questions the price of iPhones.

The 4S had a smaller screen and essentially the same specs as the iPad Mini but people bought that for $600+ with no problems but a $329 iPad is suddenly too much?

I'm not saying it's bad that people are talking about this, just that it's interesting.

Alot of people either don't do contracts, or like here in Canada, are unable to upgrade every year, so if they want the newest phone they have no choice but to go unsubsidised.

So of course we don't know the real specs yet, or even if the rumored $329 is correct. But just for fun let's say it is an ~8" iPad, 1024x768 (non-Retina) display, A5 processor, 16 GB storage, WiFi-only, for $329. In other words, the guts of an iPhone 4S attached to a smaller iPad2 display. What do you think?

It would be a bit higher than I hoped. I would have hoped that iPads with lowest specs would be mini ($299), iPad 2 ($399), iPad 3 ($499).

Are you kidding

Just bought the ipad3 and now there's talk of a refresh model and now a iPad mini for 329 we are all idiots for buying into this crap I will be going with the kindle hd now that is a deal oh and the bigger kindle will be coming out in November and will be priced close to the iPad mini what a joke apple has become

isn't the 8.9'' kindle already out?

For the specs and price you outlined, the decision would be made easy . I'd get a 32gb Nexus 7 for $250 every day of the week

I agree. If Apple comes to the table with just 16 GB, A6 and retina for $329, the Nexus 7 with the updated 32 GB is a better machine at a better price.

People will still buy the mini because it is Apple and because of the Apple ecosystem, but the Nexus 7 would be the better unit. Apple needs to bring something better for that price or at least close. IMHO.

You say "compete" like the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire are actually threats to the iPad's dominance. You know how many Nexus 7's were sold in Q3? 1 million. Apple, on the other hand, sold 17 million in Q2 (Q3 earnings aren't out yet). They can price this at $500 and stay dominant.

Apple sold zero minis, so Google has 1 million more customers on the 7 inch line than Apple. So yes, in the 7 inch space Apple IS competing with Google and Amazon.

Apple owns the large tablet space, they do not own the smaller space where price is important. Google and Amazon set the bar and price and specs, Apple has to compete in that space. The iPad set the market for its space, this is different.

If it doesn't have retina and 16GB it's overpriced. I'll buy a used iPad 2 for my kids for $300 rather than $329 for a mini with the same specs.

As far as I'm concerned, an A6 and retina display would make the mini far superior to the Nexus. I'm not looking for a budget tablet. If I were, I might settle for a Nexus or Fire. I want the power of the iPad and iPhone 5 in the 7.85" frame, the cost doesn't matter to me.

Have you used the Nexus 7? It is far from a budget tablet IMHO; price does not equal quality in everycase, and certainly not in this case. So why would an A6 and retina be better then the Tegra and screen on the Nexus 7? I am interested to know your thoughts on the areas where the screen (to which I think the Nexus 7 screen is on par, we are talking 216 ppi vs 264 ppi on the ipad3) and the processor would make a signifigant difference for your daily use that would justify the price gap.

We will find out tomorrow or Tuesday what exactly are the specs, then you can compare the too.

The current iPad kills the Nexus. An upgrade will only widen the gap. And putting the current iPad resolution on the mini would jack the ppi even higher. Do you really have to ask why an A6 or retina display would be better than the Nexus?

Like I said, I'm not looking for a budget tablet. I'm not interested in the Nexus in any way shape or form, Android holds no draw for me. I was tempted by the Fire HD, but I'm glad I held out. I want a full featured iPad mini.

I just hope they enter the 7" market with a realistic price point. There is one reason they are making an Ipad Mini and thats to compete with the Nexus and Kindle Fire. Setting an unrealistic price point ($329) isn't going to dive into the 7" market, it's going to poach sales from the full sized Ipad market. There are a lot of potential buyers out there that are looking for a small tablet, they can sell me an Ipad mini for $249 or i'll buy a Kindle Fire HD for $199.

So, Apple can price it competitively and compete with another market or price is higher and compete with itself.

Apple doesn't do market research...officially.
It's pretty inane and kind of arrogant for a company this large not to test the waters first. You'd want to know customer sentiment just in order to make an informed decision. Market research does not mean that you have to take their findings to heart, but to not engage in it is not that responsible. I'm guessing that Apple does in fact do market research, and lots of it unofficially. For their sake, I hope they do. Because most of the people on this forum are fanboys, and if this group of people--people who are willing to pay top dollar for just about anything apple puts out--are not going to buy, then trouble lies ahead. Apple can make mistakes, and this sure looks like one of them if the pricing starts at $329.

Luckily for Apple, all they have to do is cut the price. Problem solved.
So in a way I guess Apple has nothing to lose except bad PR and ill will. But if people buy it at $329, then they win. If not, lower the price until they move oodles of minis, and problem solved.

8 GB of storage is completely useless nowadays for an iOS device. App binary sized have dramatically increased since Retina displays, first the iPhone 4 and especially with the 2012 iPad. iOS itself take something like 2-3 GB out of that so 8 is really nothing. Even 16 GB is pretty thin, but that's an acceptable minimum.

I looked at my iPhone to see what I would want to have on a Mini or full size. I have many gigs of music but then I thought why would I bring all that over. I can't see circumstances when I wouldn't have my phone with me. Even when I traveled in Europe when I didn't want to pay data charges, I just put my phone in Airplane mode. I still have all my music. I'm sure there are instances when I'd like some music on a pad but I could probably fit a select selection.
Not sure I'd want 8 GB anyway but if I didn't bring my music over I certainly could fit what I needed.

Not exactly. At least for me. Mini tablet is used as a back up if I'm out, and about, not my main computer. I don't do movies, nor save music on a tablet. GPS, weather app will be used mainly, with some Email/reading and very little web browsing. I can move anything to my computer and not have it saved on a tablet if I see it taking up storage, so 8GB is OK by me. ;)

I agree. Most people who bash the Nexus have never used it. Or if they did, they probably crinkled their nose like somebody farted the entire time they handled it looking for reasons it was inferior to their beloved Apple products.

A lot of Apple customers automatically perceive any non-Apple product or Android product is junk. Now there are some bad Android products. The original Kindle was a clunky mess. But the Nexus 7 is a VERY good tablet.

I think it is starting to make sense.

If the mini had an a5, we wouldn't be getting much out of it in terms of longevity. That I would expect to be priced at 249-299. It would be obsolete by ios7, which is common for Apple to do (ios 6 I believe doesn't work on the original ipad).

I have a feeling Apple will provide a a5x and sub retina display, something in the middle but still not as good of retina as the ipad 3, maybe something that is doing 66x66 approach, in the middle of the 44x44 and 88x88 approach. For this, I can see the 329 price.

Here's my view. My mom wants to get my dad a tablet for his birthday in late November. I'd love to recommend the new iPad mini to her but both of the prices I've seen tossed around, $299 and $329, are just too much for his needs, given the competition out there. He wants to read and browse the web, play games, etc. I know he'd prefer something familiar to his experience with the iPhone he already has, but if Apple can't deliver an iPad at a truly competitive price, then I can't recommend it. The Kindle HD at $199 is exactly what he needs. I'd happily have suggested the new iPad at $249, but $299 - $100 more, or $129 at $329 - is crazy. Don't think this is an isolated case, either. Apple's going to have a much harder time selling this iPad Mini at any price over $249 than they would have even 6 months ago. The market has spoken - $249 is the breaking point, and $200 is the true sweet spot. I don't know that Apple can afford to be a luxury brand here.

But hey, they shocked us with the price of the original iPad, didn't they? No one was expecting $499. Everyone was predicting prices of hundreds more. I'm thinking that's the case here. I think Apple's going to drop that price on the screen tomorrow to gasps and it's going to be somewhere much closer to $200 than pretty much everyone expects. I hope I'm right.

Not a chance it will be close to 200$, it's Apple were talking about.

Yeah I'm not to happy with the price, even If it ends up having a retina display or a camera..

When your targeting more budget conscious users, I don't think a camera or retina display is of much importance.

Especially when you consider that the competing tablet Nexus 7 has great specifications, not to mention Jellybean makes the experience just as smooth as iOS.. Android Market is also pretty huge..

Anyway I have no plans on buying at the $329 price point..
