Your capacity choices really depend a lot on a) how you plan on using your iPad and b) how much of a "pack rat" you are.

First off, I ought to say I was somewhat surprised at how quickly I was filling up my 16gb WiFi unit. Six months of ownership and I had 13gb filled up. Which led me to ask if I really needed to carry a whole season of Mad Men around with me. First lesson: Carrying a lot of movies and TV shows takes up a LOT of space. If you plan on doing this - and aren't disciplined enough to remove old episodes - go for the big specs.

Secondly, there is tremendous variation in the amount of space Apps take up. I've got a couple of driving games (Asphalt 5 and GT racing) that are more than 400 megabytes each. Even news Apps can add up: The Daily is more than 40 megabyte. On the other hand, some relatively powerful productivity Apps are relatively svelte: Sketchbook Pro is just over 14 mB. Pages (the Apple word processor) is 66 mB. Planning on playing a lot of action games: Gonna need a lot of space.

Lastly, there is the issue of Music. I've got more than 8000 tracks in my iTunes library. But I made the conscious decision that I wasn't ever going to need my full music library on my iPad. And fortunately the synch software makes it pretty easy for me to keep just a small fraction available for those odds moments when I need it: My Top 200 Highest Rated, a automatically-selection of 100 "underplayed gems", and the most recent unlistened podcast. And all that fits into a gig and a half. But if I were to carry everything in my library - there'd be no space for anything else.

Bottom line: Buying a top-of-the-line iPad can get expensive. You need to balance your needs, your habits, the inevitable future upgrade, and your budget.

And instead of a 3G model, I bought a Pocket Wifi instead, so I have internet on the go for both the iPad AND my iPod touch :)

Pocket WiFi? Can you elaborate on that? What is the name of the brand and how much does the service cost?

Thanks.

Thanks for all the great info it really does help. Can't wait to get my iPad 2. Like the above reply I too am wondering about pocket wifi.

I might just go for the 64gb since I won some extra cash at the casino...but

The thing that is kind of holding me back though, is once the next gen comes out I'm going to want to sell this one over ebay most likely to pay for the new one, and not to thrilled about selling a 5-600 dollar item no ebay :(

Speaking of resale...which model do you think will hold its value the most when it comes to the inevitable sale before iPad 3?

yeah, id say so. i mean think about it...you have a much bigger market for a cheaper iPad. everyone wants one, but they want to spend the least amount. of course, thats just my .02

percent wise, you may lose about the same value, but cold hard dollars, you will lose more with a higher model IMO

Yeah, makes sense. I'm assuming resale value would be around 550-ish maybe on a 64gb sometime around next year?

I can't imagine selling that thing through ebay at that price though (seems risky ) like I did with my old 3g and 3gs phones

64GB is way too much. I had hundreds of apps on my old 64GB and thousands of music tracks, and it touched maybe 32GB. That said 95% of those apps were kept only for the sake of it, not because I really wanted them. Pick what I want and even 16GB is too much really given that I can stream music from my NAS wherever I am in the world.

I've decided on saying to heck with it and getting the 64gb , my 32gb iPhone is full to the max at the moment of course with the iPad im going to want more content on it so thats what im getting...

typically i believe the base model hold it's price the best.

yeah this is definitely true. Which is why i considered not getting the 64GB this time, however this time i plan on giving this ipad 2 to a family member when the new one comes out. So i want to get the best possible for them since they aren't like me upgrading their computers every year.

You would still get more for the 64gb than 32 though right?

How much do you feel the 64 GB wifi model would go for nearly a year down the line before the next gen?

You can never have too much! If you have the cash buy the 64GB. I'd prefer to have too much space than not enough.

I will be buying the white wifi 64GB version. The only reason I would buy the 32GB, is if BestBuy or Walmart don't have the 64GB in white.

I'm definitely going with the 64gb. I have a 16 iPhone4 and after my music and apps, I don't have any room for any movies...so it will be a welcome change.

As an iPad 1 early adopter, if I had it to do over again (if I was buying iPad 2), I'd buy the 16GB 3G model.

(I purchased the 3G 64GB model)

i am planning on getting my very first ipad on the 11th when the Ipad 2 comes out but would like to know how easy is it to use up all 64gb? also i am still torn between just wi-fi or wi-fi + 3g. what is the best way to go?

All I know is that we had a first gen 64gb 3G because I figured, what's another $100? However I decided that I'll be getting a 32gb 3G iPad 2 based on our usage patterns of the first gen. If it were an iPhone, I'd want the extra storage for music on the go, but with cloud storage, I just don't have as much need for it on our iPad. Even with apps which are presumably larger for tablets, I've found myself buying fewer of them than phone apps due to cost and fewer choices.

My iTunes library is about 180 GB (movies and music). With a 64 GB iPad, I will have room for only a third and already be full before adding several gigs worth of photos and apps. If I try and convince myself to buy a 32 GB model on Friday, I know that I'll end up grabbing the 64 anyway when the moment comes. The jump from 32 to 64 means another 15-20 digital copies from my movie collection will be along for the ride.

Im gonna sell my current 64 3G and go with a 64 wifi. I have only used the 3G a few times and at the cost of adding tethering to the iPhone ($15 for 2 GB) it is cheaper to do that then to buy the 3G from the iPad.

I also have not filled my 64 GB, but when I travel, I fill it with movies and music and love to have the extra space.

All in all I have been really happy with the 64 GB and that is why I am buying the 64 GB iPad 2.
