This thread is a godsend. I just called my boss and told him that I'll forgo future wages. All that money is just gonna get me mugged.

I realize that the OP is trying to rationalize his purchase of the iPhone 8, however, I would like to chime in with my $.02 on the subject of the iPhone X being a magnet for thieves. Two things I think have caused the thefts of iPhones to decrease greatly. One is "Find My iPhone" that allows the iPhone to be tracked by the police. This of course can only work on phones that the thief cannot open and change. Thieves have moved on from stealing iPhones partially because of this feature.

The other and even more important anti-theft device is the security of the phone itself. Even the FBI cannot open a phone unless they use tools that can cost $1,000,000.00 and 99.9% of crooks do not have access to that type of cash just to open a $999.00 phone, keeping in mind that even if you do get it open and can sell it you'll not get anywhere near the market price. Lastly when the phone is reported stolen to Apple they put the IMEI number on a watch list and the phone cannot be activated by anyone forever. It is a brick.

So I don't worry about my phone being stolen as much as I do about losing, or horrors, dropping it.

I've had my phone for a week and it has yet to draw a crowd. Only once that I know of did someone from another table look over to see my phone and that was because people at my table were going crazy over it. Some advice. Don't be paranoid. 2. Don't walk in bad areas at 2am. 3. Don't flash your phone around at 2am. 4. If your state allows concealed carry and you are that worried about being mugged, arm yourself.

I am sticking with my iPhone 8 for one reason: it’s less flashy.

I go out a lot and often times I’ll be out well into the AM sometimes in areas that aren’t the safest.

I would be willing to bet that if I pulled out my ~$1,500 iPhone X (256gb, apple care plus, tax, and a case) while walking on the side walk at 2 AM in some of the areas I hangout in it would be a BAD idea.

Therefore, for safety I’m sticking with my iPhone 8.

And this is the most ridiculous post I’ve seen on here ever. Thank you for the laugh.

Only you know what's right for you, but I would say that you shouldn't live in fear. Buy the product that you want to buy. Realistically, if you have it in a case, the X won't attract any more attention than any other smartphone unless you're waving it around and deliberately showing it off.

Love Apple products but frequent unsafe neighborhoods? Petition Apple to make an Apple Gun.

It will use its own proprietary ammunition which you won't be able to load or unload yourself (have to take it to an Apple Store). Instead of a trigger it will have a capacitive button, because seriously, guns have been using triggers for hundreds of years. It's old obsolete technology. Trigger-less guns are the future and the only way to move forward is for Apple to have the courage to be the first to get rid of them.

I don’t need to worry about being flashy because I was trained on how to handle situations like this.

That’s not the point. The iPhone X is more flashy than the 8. The 8 won’t grab as much attention prolly so then I should be safer overall. Everyone has an iPhone but the X is like the unicorn of iPhones right now lol
The phone is in a case and lives in your pocket 99 % of the time. This is all in your mind.

lol. This is the absolute dumbest thing I have ever heard.

If someone is planning to rob you, they are going to rob you for your iPhone 8 same as your X. Including your wallet and whatever else you have.

It's not like they see an 8 and say "ew, next!"

I own the iPhone X now. No problems.

I go out on nightly walks, usually at midnight and track my walks with my Apple watch. I usually walk about 5 miles at a time and I frequently hold my iPhone 7+ or 8+ in my hand. I don't live in the safest neighborhood as there have been numerous shootings within 5 miles, more shootings and murders than I could ever remember this past year. I have never in this past year since going out walking at midnight, worried about my safety or getting mugged for my iPhone. No one will ever know which model I have in my hand unless they ask. I even go out with my AirPods in my ears many times and have even had corded Apple headsets which scream I have an iPhone and have never gotten mugged. No one cares.

When I do go out walking, I bring my phone, wallet with ID but no cash. I'm more worried about losing any cash I might have with me so I leave it at home.

We had a short term manager at my job who had an iPhone X and I had no idea it was even an X during the time he worked there. One day, he had it sitting on a counter and I still didn't know what iPhone model it was until I asked him. He had it in a case and I was thinking it was either an iPhone 7 or 8 since it was smaller then my +.

So again, most people who see you using your phone, most likely have no idea what iPhone it even is unless they ask or you tell them or unless it's so obvious like an SE.
