If anyone here finds a high end computer with the same mobility of the MacBook Pro and has replaceable RAM, battery, hard drive, etc, go with God.

I don't think there's any spec in the current MBP line which won't be performant in 4-5 years. This thing is a screamer.

I'd say my Dell XPS 7590 is pretty comparable, and even more so when you factor in that it is less than half the price. It has a 4K OLED screen which is amazing, 32GB Ram that is user replaceable, 1TB SSD which I think is an NMVE drive that is replaceable and has a second slot to expand, and a GTX 1650 4GB GPU. So the Dell had those specs and was $1800, while my 16" MBP has the i9, 64GB Ram, 2TB SSD and the 8GB 5500M but was $4300. So it does have better specs, but nothing user replaceable or expandable and not more than double the performance. Don't get me wrong, I love my new 16", the only thing it's missing for me is an SDcard reader and the glowing Apple logo. Another benefit with the Dell is their support. I always buy AppleCare+ and I bought Dells Pro Support for this XPS laptop. It offers onsite service if needed which is pretty nice.

The XPS line is amazing nowadays and easily my favorite Windows Laptop line. Unfortunately, if the reviews are to be believed, thermal throttling is a big problem and the OLED display uses a ton of battery without most content being able to properly used the 4K HDR display.

Yes, I am a little upset. In terms of laptop GPUs. The top of the line offering in these 16" machines is ranked #71. For the Price, apple is charging they should be in the top 5 or 10 at least.

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

Most of those GPU's which are ahead of the 5500M on that page consume more power than the entire MacBook Pro 16". It has I believe a 96 Watt power budget for everything and those high-end GPU's consume 130 watts just on their own leaving no power left over to run the screen, logic board, CPU etc

In Apples design they have I believe a 45 Watt CPU and whatever is left over for everything else. I mean certainly they could make the notebook even thicker and put in a RTX 2080 or RTX 6000 but the power brick will need to be twice as large, the notebook would have to be a pound or two heavier for the larger heatsinks. You wouldn't be able to charge the laptop on a plane anymore while using it etc

It's all about trade offs and Apple has never put amazing GPU's in their notebooks. Always they use low end to mid-range cards to stay within their power and thermal budgets.

But having said all this if you look at the chart in the Mid-Range section the 5500M would be about 7th once you remove old cards NVIDIA no longer sells. They are showing 2015 GPU's in that chart still which aren't sold anymore like the GTX 980m.

I use a Dell Thunderbolt dock with 2 - 1440p monitors with the XPS as my work laptop. I keep the laptop in clam shell mode so I'm not really using the 4K display ever. But running numerous apps, chrome with 15-20 tabs, BlueBeam and AutoCad usually running and I've only really ever heard the fans spin up a handful of times, and that was usually when I was really pushing AutoCad with numerous layers and trying to render whole a buildings floorplan. I've been very impressed with how well the laptop has replaced my Dell business class desktop with Xeon processor, 128Gb of Ram and Nvidia Quadro gpu. It's definitely held its own. And I can take it home or to jobsites when needed.

I got mine yesterday. Absolutely perfect. Hell of a machine in every area. Its just Catalina is letting it down at the moment but hopefully a few more updates and will be ok.

The X1 Extreme Gen 2 is another great alternative (the Dell XPS 15 has already been mentioned). True 4K screen (fun fact - even though the diagonal 15.6" is smaller than the MBP's 16", it's actually slightly wider, so if you're watching 4K content, the screen is effectively bigger). Replaceable battery, RAM, and SSD. Just as powerful. And much cheaper.

Yes, it runs Windows, hey it's better than it used to be, and there's always Hackintosh...

I have yet to see a review by someone actually in the market for a MBP who complains about weight and/or "bulk."

I actually thought the post was going to be about 2016-19 MBP 15" buyers who were upset they had to beta test the non bulky but ever-so-much balky keyboard before Apple wised up.

I agree. It's funny isn't it all on see on here is people ripping apple for trying to make everything thin and light and putting that over everything else. Now apple make this MBP 16" thicker and heavier to help with this issues and people are moaning about it's "bulk". I mean come on it's one or the other. This is is far from bulky or heavy.

And it's not as if there aren't alternatives if you want to go thinner and lighter. Sheesh.

Its the best laptop I've ever owned and I never thought I would say that over my 2015. I loved that thing and didn't think I would ever part with it until I got a chance to use this one. It has exceeded my expectations and is one of my favorite Apple products of all time.

I feel like they could of reduced the bezels much more. I think it looks a little off to me how much space is on top compared to the sides. I was expecting basically bezel-less design it’s a small change from the 15”. There is a big area for improvement in the screen which could of kept the machine the same size as the 15”.

hmm....
larger screen
smaller bezels
faster
more powerful
RAM up to 64GB
internal storage up to 8TB

(4 oz. more weight, a couple of mm taller, slight increase in dimensions due mostly to larger screen and battery)
Yeah, all definitely show-stoppers - I can't believe that Apple would screw their users with this complete fail.

One word - No upgradability
[automerge]1574913209[/automerge]
Worthless, since you are stuck with what you pay for - Apple is gouging it’s consumers !

More evidence that shows Apple cut corners - no thanks I will stay with my upgradable 2012 MacBook Pro - cook has got to go as he is destroying the Mac.

my upgradable 2012 MacBook Pro
...which at this point cannot be upgraded with anything that would be in any way comparable with the hardware Apple and other vendors are currently offering. It's been 7 years, let's give it a rest.

As much as I agree that software and hardware QC haven't been stellar lately, the MBP 16" is a big step in the right direction for the Mac, and while your mileage may vary the general consensus is that this is the best MBP release since the venerable 2015 model. Is it perfect? No, however:
- it's an extremely capable machine for any kind of usage
- the major concerns of users (keyboard, thermals...) have been addressed
- most of the issues found so far fall into the category of small problems and annoyances that can be found on pretty much any generation of machines.

TC is next.
Apple is a trillion (near) dollar corporation, No matter how you slice it, Tim Cook is wildly successful. I may not be a fan of him, but I acknowledge he took apple in a direction that has made them the dominant company.

Yeah, there is no justification on planet earth for firing Tim Cook. Unless you know something about Tim Cook retiring, he's not going anywhere.

ijust feel they dint really care about the Mac as it’s not making them the most money - the iPhones and other stuff is what’s ma king them the money. It’s a disgrace to buy the 16 inch at its min pricing abs later on you cant upgrade it - diy upgrades are gone. Which is why the 16 inch is junk because in 2years say you want a new SSD or more memory - you can’t because it’s all soldered in. Multi trillion and greedy they are.
