The return of MagSafe can provide a good incentive for people to upgrade but the idiots like Dan Riccio are selfish, imbecile and reluctant to preserve the safety feature for a newer model of your MBP. šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

Well I'm happy with my 16". Couldn't care less about the price as it's a business tool that I earn my money from.

Happy to have 64Gb of memory to give plenty to my VMs. Happy to have 8 CPUs to give plenty to my VMs and other software. Happy to have plenty of SSD space so I'm not scratching around for the last 100Gb.

Thicker, heavier. Sorry, can't even notice it compared with the wife's 15" 2017 MBP.

Am annoyed at the lack of ports. Am particularly miffed at having to use the ridiculous USB-C for charging and loosing that wonderful MagSafe. Not impressed with Catalina, and especially that my 350Gb music library not being loaded by the pathetic half-arsed "Music" application.

The big surprise was how nice the speakers sound.

Aside from that, it's just a tool. I buy Macs because they work. Utilitarian if you like.

Personally I’m disappointed. I wrote a frank review over on Reddit and got flamed by Apple fanboys. I don’t like the keyboard, the speakers are loud but the frequency response is not even close to flat with jacked up bass and odd phasing. The display is not 4K and not OLED. Considering Lenovo or Dell. Let’s see if I get flamed for saying that here.

I won't flame you for your opinion, it is just that, as is mine. I disagree about the keyboard and the speakers. Having typed on the butterfly keyboard for 3 or so years, it is hard for me to describe how much better this keyboard feels to me, but it does feel like it used to years ago. The speakers are the best I have ever heard on a laptop, but they are still laptop speakers, The only non Apple speakers that I have is the Surface Book 2, and these blow them away as well. So in my experience, they are great. Can't say much about the 4K or OLED displays on other computers, never used them, but Apple has always been top of the line or close in their displays, and no complaints here. Not being a fanboy, just my opinion using Apple and PC, and what I have tried, though I admit I haven't seen much out in the last 3 years to compare.

The good news is you have choice.

I choose to use proper loudspeakers and amplifier whilst listening in the study. I choose to use decent over-ear high quality headphones -- not Beats or Bose rubbish -- when listening in the office. I don't need 4k on a titchy little 16" screen as 220 PPI is all one needs (but then I don't film in 4k). If I did *need* 4k, I'd use decent quality large external monitors. As it happens I use a couple of Apple Cinema displays; one at home, one in the office.

But most of all, I choose to never use that Microsoft junk when there's an alternative that's far nicer to use than that hideous, bloated, popup-tastic Win-DOS spyware platform which mandates subscriptions to anti-virus software just to use it.

The MBP 16" laptop speakers are out of phase to 'widen' the stereo image. Old 1970's trick come back into fashion. This does make listening to some music on your lap whilst working far more pleasant. In comparison with the outgoing 15" machine, these speakers are a vast improvement.

Why would anyone get upset about a laptop? Life’s too short. Like it, buy it. Don’t like it, don’t buy it.

I like it. I’m coming from a MBP13, I checked the MBP16 out in the local Apple store and was impressed. It packs in a powerful computing experience into what remains a slim, sleek and portable package. It really isn’t heavy or bulky in my opinion, given what it delivers, although I know this is very subjective. Looking forward to getting mine.

You're not going to get flamed for your opinion as you are absolutely entitled to it. If you are considering Lenovo or Dell then you obviously don't care about what OS you use which most of us in here do, and its MacOS.

I don't really know what you are looking for in a keyboard, but the new one is miles better than the butterfly keyboard imo. And from a speakers standpoint I challenge you to go find better ones in a laptop, because you won't. Del and Lenovo laptop speakers are tinny and weak, while the MacBook Pro's are for the most part, awesome. And I couldn't care less about OLED. I wanted a crisp screen that looks great and I get that with the MacBook Pro.

Nope, for better thermals, battery life? And better speakers and performance to boot?

If I didn't have arthritic wrists, :(I would kept mine. For me, it would have been great if my physical limitations did not exist.

It's not for everyone, but it is a better value than the 15" MBPs have been.

It got me to upgrade from my 2017 13"

However, I think the sweet spot will be when they eliminate the screen bezels completely, allowing them to have a bigger screen in a smaller form factor.

I have it but my issues are the screen doesn’t seem bigger cos the huge top bezel that could have been cut down to match side ones, and also the keyboard backlight is so strong not like the butterfly just the letters, also the keyboard is harder to type one handed, also the speakers are no way as loud than my 2018 one, they sound nice but just so quiet

Had it and returned it because of eye strain from the display, which was dimmer and had poor response times. Also noticed frequent popping when starting or stopping audio. Just not worth the hassles.

Yeah the popping is driving me crazy my return window is jan 8th if they don’t fix it I’ll return it

why not just return now since you obviously hate it?

what is it with people here that buy machines they hate and trash before they buy?

While I applaud Apple for their attempt to walk back some of their sillier design choices from previous iterations, I still take issue with all of the praise being heaped on the new 16ā€ MBP.

What has Apple done for us for the increased cost (over previous years)? Granted, the base specs result in a cheaper price than the 15 MBP it replaces, but if you ask me, this is where the MBP should’ve been already.

Again I ask, what has Apple given us for our money?

They’ve taken our ability upgrade/repair with their glue and rivets, and the replacement of sockets with solder. This reduces costs in their end, but where is our cost break? They are making a fortune on dongles that could be replaced with installed ports on the logic board. Don’t get it twisted, this isn’t Apple being innovative, this is pure profit motive.

So they finally went back to a proper keyboard? You’re still stuck with a Touch Bar whether you want or not, few ports, and zero upgradability. Congratulations on your larger screen.

Same price as 15" for so much more.

Seriously, over the coveted 2015 RMBP, what is better? The return of the ESC key? The cursor keys? The return of the scissor keyboard? The lack of ports? The need for dongles? The zero repairability score? The impossibility of upgrading? The higher price?

Quite happy with mine. Not a fan of the touchbar (my first laptop with that) but i love the touch id button.
Screen si better than my mid 2012 retina MBP. Speakers are a bit bass-y but much better as well. I listen with headphones though so i don't care about the speakers much. Performance wise it's good but so was my 2012 MBP, to be honest. Keyboard is fine. Trackpad is fine. No reason to be upset for me ;)

I don't know about the preconfigured units, but the maxed version, despite having better specs, is a thousand dollars or so cheaper than last year's 15 inch.

Totally agree with this. When the RAM failed on my 2013 MBP, the entire motherboard had to be replaced by Apple, at a cost of over $1000. When the battery needed replacing, I ended up paying for an entire new upper case including keyboard and trackpad. This is Apple cutting costs at the user's expense.

The battery will always need replacing eventually. RAM doesn't last forever. These future expenses need to be considered when buying these machines, which are already 30-40% more expensive than their vastly more easily repaired PC laptop competitors.

Battery repairs cost $199.

The native resolution is 71% of 4K, but matches up well with the macOS 'ideal' 110/220 PPI. Can you explain what benefit there is to gain from the additional pixels?

Personally I have always preferred higher pixel density displays. I have good eyesight and can reduce the font size to get more screen real estate. The actual size of the display isn't all that relevant, I can move it closer to or further from my eyes to change the effective field of view. To consider an extreme example, a 30" display viewed from 4 feet looks much the same as a 15" display viewed from 2 feet. It's the actual number of available pixels that makes the difference for me. A 4K screen is better for me than an identically sized 3K screen. I can just sit a little closer to it and it's effectively like having a bigger monitor.

But I'd think 4K would be absolutely essential for anyone producing or consuming a lot of 4K video content on the go. I guess that's why the Dell XPS 15 with the 4K OLED seems to be becoming the most popular laptop for video creators. You don't want to be viewing a downscaled or cropped version of your video while you edit it.

Yes, and the actual cost of the battery is what, $50? Battery replacements on other laptops are so easy you can do them at home with little more than a screwdriver and 5 minutes to spare.

It’s a good thing you said ā€œlogic boardā€ rather than eg ā€œmain boardā€ or that sentence would be completely lacking logic.

Only until the point your eyeballs kiss the screen.

You can’t make a small screen infinitely bigger usefully just by getting closer and closer.

A 4K screen is better for me than an identically sized 3K screen.
You do what you like buddy but you know you haven’t actually provided a reason?

Even on a 24ā€ display native 4K is painfully small text.

No, when apple moved to fixed batteries the price of replacement batteries never changed - the fitting and recycling of the old one is ā€œfreeā€.

This write-up reminded me of ā€œwhat have the Romans ever done for us?ā€ in the Life of Brian.

Nicely done. Worth rewatching.
