Nope. I stream all media (music, tv, movies) from my iMac. In the case of traveling I just put on what I'll watch and use iPhone for music.

With iCloud, iTunes Match it's clear apple is moving away from physical storage. Unless apps balloon in size, it's a safe bet to think 64 might be the highest iPads will go.

I'm inclined to agree here. Cloud storage\streaming has reached a point where is can replace most locally stored data. There will be exceptions (such as those mentioned by the OP) but overall the typical consumer doesnt need much storage.

I remember being worried when i got my first iPad 2 years ago that 64GB wouldnt be enough, but due to cloud storage (such as iCloud, Dropbox) and streaming (such as Air Video and iTunes Match) i've never went over half of it :)

We cannot dwell on the absent of the 128GB option, I opted for the 64gb as there is no point waiting another year or more for the next best thing, improved storage etc. I am gonna enjoy this one most as I can :)

I think the 64gb is sufficient. Beyond that cloud storage is probably the way to go. I also use the Kingston widrive, there is also the Seagate wifi HDD, I think that is 500gb.

This may seem strange but I probably won't upgrade because there isn't a 128GB model. Nowadays with a 17gb iTunes matched 256kbps music library and about 100 apps my 32gb iPad is full (and that's after deleting about 40 apps). That's all in well now but in the near future apps are going to be much bigger with the new HD screen - they're already hitting 1GB - so I foresee 2GB apps being "normal" now. Plus, I shoot 20MB RAW photos on my DSLR. I usually bring my iPad on trips but there's no way I would be able get away with using a 64GB model for what I think are MAJOR things:

-Music
-HD Apps
-RAW Photos to edit in the new iPhoto
-HD video rentals (for watching on a plane)

I don't think having an iPad that can hold a decent music library, 1000 RAW Images (the current photostream limit), 4 HD Movies, and a nice suite of HD apps is asking for too much for a CONSUMER product.

I really want to upgrade but think that likely this issue will come to focus once HD apps are released forcing Apple to update the iPad with a 128GB model next March. Hence, I'll probably wait for that as even now my needs wouldn't be met if I went HD.

Does anyone else see this as a concerning issue?

16GB is perfect for me...

I wouldn't use 128gb on a tablet but I would on my iPhone. I've run out of space on my 32gb and even the 64 would be a compromise. I'm not happy with how storage capacity growth in mobile devices has stagnated. If that wasn't bad enough, fewer devices are having expandable storage.

I think the lack of a 128Gb option is a bit of an odd omission for such a high resolution tablet.

Magazines, video files and photos will all need an increase in file size to make use of that increased tablet resolution, along with games and apps also increasing in size as the need for larger textures becomes apparent.

My 64Gb iPad 1st gen is already full, with me having to decide what to delete every few days in order to make space for new media/apps.

With only 64Gb on an iPad 3rd gen, that's going to get even worse!

I was really hoping for 32GB base, 64GB mid and 128Gb high end. Oh well I had to buy 64GB. I live with two years of 16GB with the first Gen iPad. I am sure I can find away to live with 64GB.

Why hope for something that is just a small step up? Let's think big. We all know that iPads are capable of having more battery life and more storage. Why not make the iPad a little thicker and heavier and go for the gold? I would say a reasonable amount of storage would be about 1TB of flash storage and then let's tune up the battery to at least 36 hours. We'll probably have a 2.2lbs ipad with a thickness of about half and inch.

This really depends on the amount of contents an individual wants to carry around with them. I know I can fill a 64gb iPad up very quickly with my music and video library but now I managed to only use around 60% of the space of my 32gb iPad.

Besides, 128gb iPad will likely be in the $800~$1000 range, it's a bit too expensive for a tablet if you ask me, so I'm not upset at all.

i was surprised anyone wanted or expected this. i mean, it is a huge extra cost for apple (ssd costs), so their profit margins would take a hit, and it is a huge extra cost to consumers, because it brings the cost up to something close to the macbook air. that doesn't make much sense to me.

more importantly, as others have mentioned, who cares? with the cloud, how much are we really carrying around in our ipads anymore? between my ipad and my iphone, I'll have 48 gb and i still won't use it all, because i have all of my music in the cloud already, and another 50gb or so of various files in my backup services.

i see the use case for it. and, i certainly see the very valid yearning for an sd card. but, the world is so different than it was just a few years ago. i guess i no longer feel the need to pay a premium for portable memory in this environment.

Considering that I have a .m4v(960X540, 1hr 36min) that is 2.55GB in iTunes implies that a .m4v(1920X1080, 1hr 30min) would be about 10GB. Thus a 64GB iPad could realistically hold at most 5 movies that would would come close to making use of its native resolution.

Now let's take into account my 64GB iPod touch's storage breaks down as such:
17.70GB Audio
11.00GB Videos
00.08GB Photos
09.30GB Apps
00.02GB Books
01.05GB Other
18.90GB Free (note that this implies about 6GB for the system)

Ok so let's say that if I get my 1st iPad, and it has definitely gone from a "probably" to an "if", I don't put my Audio on the iPad, but I do keep the same Apps and Other. I would expect that I would put more Books and photos and the photos and videos taken with the iPad would be at a higher resolution than what I have on my iPod touch which is a 3rd generation and doesn't have a camera. So for argument let's say that Photos and Books would go up to 5GB. That would mean, if i got an iPad I would expect to have about 32GB, accounting for system storage, already used up leaving space for at most 3 1960X1080 HD movies or about 9-10 episodes of a 30min show in HD.

True on a trip I probably wouldn't watch 3 movies or 9-10 TV-shows, but this sort of cap does mean that I would be limited as to my options of what to watch on the trip. Also note that is I'm on a trip, I might be using the iPad to take photos and videos. Thus, I realistically couldn't put 3 movies on the iPad and leave space for new photos and videos.

What is the point of the Retina display if I can only keep realistically keep 1 or 2 movies at one time that makes use of it.

P.S. I have no interest in iCloud and if I get an iPad, it would be the WiFi only model. I like introducing my iPod touch as "My iPhone without the monthly bills", and don't plan on adding a monthly bill to an iPad.

My 32 is pretty much full and I thought about going to the 64 when I ordered the new one but in the end stuck with the 32. With everything re-downloadable from the cloud I really don't need it. I'll just download what I need and swap things out. I have way too many apps on mine now and am going to be pretty picky about what I put on my new one. I have tons of apps, tons of pics and 3 or 4 TV episodes and a movie right now. That's plenty and as I have the 3g (soon 4g LTE) I'll just download what I want when I want it.

Surprised? Maybe a little. Upset? No.

I should have used the words surprised or disappointed - upset seems like I actually have an emotional connection to the product... I don't.

I would have bought the 128GB unit if it was availble, BUT, not having 128GB was NOT a deal breaker for me!

I am not close to filling my current 64GB iPad 2.

You will need to decide what you must have and put the rest into DropBox.

My dropbox and icloud account (free versions) would not nearly make up for the 64->128GB difference

I think the lack of a 128Gb option is a bit of an odd omission for such a high resolution tablet.

Magazines, video files and photos will all need an increase in file size to make use of that increased tablet resolution, along with games and apps also increasing in size as the need for larger textures becomes apparent.

Magazines are a category I totally forgot I had on my iPad. Nowadays each freaking PDF is ~300MB! I can see them getting a lot bigger.

Nope. I stream all media (music, tv, movies) from my iMac. In the case of traveling I just put on what I'll watch and use iPhone for music.

I just did this and thanks for the suggestion! Basically I always have my iphone (which has all my music) with me so now will listen to my music on a trip through the iphone while using my iPad for whatever else. I just saved myself all that Music space! I still think 128GB is necessary if you want to do real photos/videos/media creation and consumption on a trip however (and apple WANTS you to use your iPad for this - it's why they made iPhoto!)

To all the people who think the iPad is not a Mac - you're right - but people want to use it instead of their Macs and apple is attempting to make it so that a user could ONLY own an iPad (they're not their yet, but that IS their goal for certain users).

I think traveling is the big issue. Basically, when you're traveling you don't have the ability to do what you normally can at home to manage your storage. You don't have internet access all the time (and thus can't stream), you don't have your home computer (and thus can't shuffle around your apps or whatever), and you don't have an external HD to keep photos and videos on. When you're traveling you're basically just stuck with what you have at the time you leave and those are the times that you really need all the space you can get.

Still don't understand why people have a need to load up their ENTIRE music collection on their iDevices. Who listens to all of their music at once? I just don't get it. Maybe I'm missing something? Also, how many apps to do you have that max out your device?

Lastly, there is a 64gb iPad. If you maxed out the 32, get the 64. Why complain about no having 128? Then you will have people complaining why not 256?

It never ends.

Yes, my ass is hurting because there was no 128gb iPad.

I wouldn't have purchased a 128 GB, but I would've saved $100 if they had gone with 32, 64, 128.

I would love to have a 128g version. I travel a lot. Sometimes weeks at a time. While I don't keep much music on mine I do keep a bunch of video. My 64g is pretty full and 'swapping out' just isn't much of an option. And many times neither is streaming since I often travel to places where wifi is either non-existent or so bad as to make streaming impossible.

Everyone has different needs. Just because your own personal uses are covered doesn't mean that others are ok. To be honest, that's the reason I think they really should have an sd card slot. That way those of us who really need extra storage could get it. But that's not going to happen hence the need for a 128g version.

I was really hoping for 128GB (maybe next time), but then you can't have everything - the retina display alone was enough to temp me.

I'm sure my new 64GB model will (soon) serve me well.

I'm sad that there isn't a 128GB option.

I am however not surprised.

Got a 64GB Black and that will keep me going I hope.!
