Have you not heard of VoiceOver? Blind people flock to iPhones, because Apple really cares about acessibility (which makes this all the more puzzling.) I think there was even a WWDC video recently in which one of the segments was about a blind man who used the iPhone to help him navigate.

Just tried it with VoiceOver on, it says "screen unlocked" or something like that. So the lack of the unlock sound has no effect on blind users.

----------

And all these people saying it is still there on ios 7 GM, please post a video or stop saying it. I'm almost 100% convinced you are mistaking "unlock sound" for "lock sound".

As insignificant as it may seem to some, the fact that one is there and not the other is bothersome.

Please keep the "if this is the stuff you worry about you need to rethink your life/priorities" comments out.

Still doesn't make much sense to remove unlock but leave the lock sound.

I agree, I'm just saying it definitely has been removed on ios 7 GM. Not sure whether it is intentional (probably) or a bug. But apple doesn't always do things that make sense to you and me. Remember the lack of copy and paste until ios 2.0? Or maybe 3.0, can't even remember.

Ah, well that's good.

Personally, I don't really care about either sound, (and I slightly prefer it without) but it's weird they removed one and not the other.

They were apparently having trouble coming up with an implementation they liked, which I can understand. This, I have no idea...

I can't believe so many people don't seem to understand the difference between "lock" and "unlock".

I'm glad it's gone...always felt like other people thought I was taking a picture of them when I wasn't. Was pointless IMHO.

Outside of people with severely limited sight, I'm not sure why you need a sound on a phone that always has an image when you unlock it?

So just turn it off. It's nice to have a choice in this matter. I totally agree with most here that it seems half-assed to have a lock sound but not an unlock sound. Either have both or none.

Since the point of the unlock sound was to help emulate a metal switch being slid open (the old slider), it makes no sense to keep it.

There's no longer a faux metal knob being slid across the screen to help people. Your merely swiping the lock screen itself away, so the skeuomorphic sound can go.

Lack of something that should be there is certainly one thing, but removing one half of something that's already there while leaving the other half that is just as important or unimportant makes even less sense than things that don't make much sense. ;)

Well, aside from there being an option that you can set not to use it at all, what about the lock sound, why would it make sense to leave that in?

There's nothing that locks the screen either to correspond with the sound that's there...yet it's still there. They also could have easily changed/updated the sound, as they did with some other sounds.

Unless you're blind. For blind people, that sound is the only confirmation they have that they've successfully unlocked their device.

Someone did mention that if you have VoiceOver turned on (as most sight-impaired people typically would) you would/should get an announcement that your phone has been unlocked when that happens. Assuming that's the case, at least it shouldn't be much of an issue from that point of view. That's not to say that the sound shouldn't be there though.

You're right. I tried it out and when I unlocked the device, VoiceOver said, "Page one of two," and announced the name of the app in the upper left-hand corner. So I guess there really isn't any need for the unlock sound.

(Strange that it said, "Page one of two." I actually have four pages).

I think part of the reason Is touch Id. Like someone mentioned the unlock sound doesn't make sense any more.

Does the phone still get unlocked even with TouchID? It makes no more or less sense then the lock sound, and yet that one is still there.

I don't have iOS 7, but I am curious if there is possibly a sound, but it's been set to be triggered by the Fingerprint sensor on the 5S?

I don't like the thought of it being gone and feel that this would actually make no sense, since the fingerprint sensor is not present on all devices, at this time, so I am just suggesting it out of curiosity.

Yes. But I have it turned off.
But if you turn it on, and then once the phone is locked unlock the phone you hear a sound? Seems like no one has been able to hear one (short of one person who said they heard it, but then said they didn't hear it anymore, so it wasn't really clear).

Any chance you might make a quick video of it? Would be very interesting to see it in action in the iOS 7 GM for someone, considering how rare something like that would be.

LOL I might be able to later tonight! Im sure there are more people that have it working.

I have the unlock sounds. Don't know why people are saying it's gone

Here we go again...

Wait till it mysteriously "disappears" and he'll swear it was there before. :D
