More 3rd party apps need to be updated first, but yes its already immediately and irreplaceably useful.

People that just fart around on their iPad like its a toy will probably never use it.

This x100. Exact reason I will still be sticking with my rMBP for "productivity". There may be an iOS of the future that can replace my laptop, but iOS 9 ain't it.

I continue to be entertained by people who think a touch screen is ever going to invalidate the mouse.

Two. Different. Kinds. Of. Input.

And I continue to be baffled by people who think the OPTION of a Touch Screen is supposed to invalidate the mouse.

You're. Reading. It. Wrong.

Nobody (and I mean, NOBODY) has ever said Touch should REPLACE the Mouse. The argument has always been to add touch as an ADDITIONAL input method.

Pencil does not REPLACE Touch capability
Siri does not REPLACE keyboard text input
Touchscreen on Mac does not REPLACE mouse

Adding in additional input methods to the iPad, iPhone or MacBook do NOT replace existing input methods. It merely gives users options.

Hence why sentences like, "there
May be an iOS of the future that replaces my MacBook" are utterly ridiculous...and so are people who still think that's possible.

The only way for iOS to ever replace Mac OS is if you stop doing certain kinds of work. Period.

I see this a lot though. People will perform a task on their iPads in a dozen steps using workarounds and multiple apps talking to each other to move files and projects around, when a Mac/PC was clearly the right machine for the job.

It's ok to admit that tablets are better at some things and Macs are better at others. I do not believe in shoehorning things into a role they weren't meant for, but some people will do it at the cost of convenience. iOS 9 just isn't the holy grail mobile OS that people are making it out to be. It's definitely a start though, and the new iPad Pro/mini/future Air 3 hopefully start getting people wanting to upgrade their tablets again.

I love the tablet form factor, and I love iOS, but either one as a main workstation in 2015 is a pipe dream.

Nobody memtioned anything about split screen tabbed browsing which is imo is the most useful feature, yet apparently it is not implemented. Complete oversight. It does not seem possible to have 2 safari app opened in split view either.

That's actually a good point. There are many occasions in which I've wanted to be in two tabs at the same time. I guess the only way I can do that now is to install a third party browser that has been updated alongside Safari.

There is this third party browser which you can use besides Safari. It would indeed be great to simply use two Safari browsers at once.

I'm still waiting for certain apps like Facebook, Pages and YouTube to support these features though.

There is already this third party YouTube app which supports these new Split view/Slide over/PiP features. Let's hope that Google will soon also update their official YouTube app to take use of these features.

I really like it. My only gripe is I can't a calculator app to show up in it. Can anyone recommend a calculator app that will work in slide over? Or is there a compatibility issue with slide over not working with calculator apps?

I played around with Split View in the store and honestly, I can't really think of a reason to use this often. It's more useful with a bluetooth keyboard because at least the on screen keyboard doesn't obstruct the entire screen.

Slide Over is kind of silly because you keep having to swipe over to the other app and mess with it and it just goes away immediately after you switch back. Sometimes you have to double swipe it in like you're in a game, which is even less seamless.

Anyway I'd love to hear if people are actually finding the multitasking in iOS 9 useful. So far I'm underwhelmed, but perhaps there's cool stuff I could be doing?
I'm going to join you, my vote goes to underwhelmed. Brought to us by the gimmick geniuses that also created Live Photos, those odd wobbly things that the easily amused just love.

I work in medicine and use my iPad to access our electronic medical records system, to hand-write notes, and to reference textbooks and other such resources.

That's exactly the kind of thing that I think split view was made for and where it will shine. For students needing to reference books, artists wanting a reference photo to work off etc.

Recently sold my iPad Air 2 and Mac Mini and got a MacBook Air 13 inch. I run a blog that uses wordpress and it was so frustrating to use on the iPad without a mouse when on the go and the app for it sucks. There's just no comparing a tablet (no matter how big and powerful) to an actual computer. I really liked the split screen feature but there was something awkward about it...I suppose it will be much better on the iPad Pro.

Besides Calculator for iPad Free (free) which was mentioned there are also PCalc (9,99 dollar), PCalc Lite (free) and Calculator Pro for iPad (1,99 dollar) which offer Slide Over / Split View functionality.

See a complete list of apps in this topic start post.

I find them useful for both Slack and Twitter. I can be reading an article while also watching over a discussion on slack, without having to switch apps. Basically short messaging apps are the best IMO.

My only complaint about it is the way you switch apps...if you have a lot of slide over compatible apps it is a lot of scrolling and searching...there should be some kind of "home screen" for the slide over panel where you can pin your favorite slide over apps.

Can't say I use split view overly often, then again I might when it's more widely implemented. Slide over is great for twitter though.

Either you find it useful or you don't. You don't have to manufacture uses for the feature and you don't have to use it.
Exactly.

Generally, whenever someone responds to a query like that, the person requesting the feedback goes on to dismiss the reasons as unimportant or irrelevant. :)

Yes. Perhaps in settings in a future iOS we'll be able to select the apps we want in it. There is a bunch of stuff in there I won't use and would like to remove for simplicity and aesthetics. I hope it doesn't take until iOS 10 to implement.

Split view and slide over are my most valued features in iOS 9. 90% of my teaching, research and creative writing is done on my iPad and I've been waiting for this functionality. I use slide over in two of my writing apps (Byword and Ulysses), love having split view in Word, and I'm looking forward to getting split view in Ulysses.

I was able to deal with the tedium of cut-and-paste prior to these features, but having reference material side by side just makes my work life so much easier.

I can't wait until more apps support Split View.

Using an iPad mini 2, so no multitasking for me. I do use slide over for accessing my podcasts from overcast when I am in another app. Still don't use it all that much, but it's nice to have for when I need it.

I never really used split view or slide over, so I turned slide over off. It annoyed me when I was browsing and I was always envoking it by accident. Just my personal prefference as I'm sure its useful for many.

I try to use it whenever possible but overall for my useage I don't find it all that useful. Using a calculator in slide over is nice but typically I just ask Siri and it is generally faster and easier.

Two browser instances would be useful but not yet supported on iOS.
