I fear that if Apple is taking their time in releasing the larger phone, like say it gets delayed to next year. I believe that Samsung will get even stronger because their larger flagship phones have no competition from Apple. Apple needs to stop the bleeding asap and stop Samsung from acummulating so much money!

Articles like this one really makes me feel depressed...

The way Android phones are going with regards to screen size, in the not too distant future we are going to be carrying tablets around. The majority of people want a phone that comfortable fits in the pocket, as that's where most of us carry our phones.

There has to be a limit for a smartphones screen size, else otherwise, the screens are just going to ever increase in size.

The trouble now with smartphones is, they have been out for a number of years, and in the earlier years the evolution was much greater, but now its much less. I feel it will remain this way until the replacement for the smartphone (whatever that may be) is here.

There is not going to be a smartphone market. These are touchscreen personal communicators. They will come in different sizes from 3.5" all they way to 10" and everything in between. And with VoIP and VoLTE, there will be little functional difference.

Apple will soon consolidate the iPhone and Ipad interfaces to fit multiple screen sizes and resolutions with universal apps.

Yep, and at some point tablets will be so powerful that we won't make the distinction between them and laptops any longer. It's just going to be a slate that can be put into some kind of dock for static tasks, but is also very mobile and always connected. Hell, look at the Surface Pro - we're almost there, as soon as we no longer have to make the trade offs plaguing the Surface Pro (form factor, active cooling, low battery life) you can bet Apple will release an iPad Pro that runs on some 10nm Intel processor and is just as fast as a current MBP.

In just a few years, the hierarchy of smartphone-tablet-laptop-desktop will be moot. And even today it makes little sense to insist on "phone-sized" devices. I use my iPhone for reading, browsing, writing and gaming way more often than I actually hold it up to my ear to call someone. It's essentially an iPad Nano. And for that purpose, the screen is just a little too small and iOS is just a little too... rigid and static.

Good point. I have no idea. I can't imagine the reasoning of someone who buys a 4S today. Maybe they think they're getting off cheap, but they're still entering into an expensive 2 year contract...

For most people, they'd rather get the phone at a reduced price and pay for the service for 2 years. It's similar thinking for why satellite TV services do extremely well. Plus, I don't think that people are offered the option to get the phone for the unsubsidized price, specifically because the carriers aren't guaranteed their revenue stream for the next two years. They try to keep that on the downlow.

I just moved from iPhone 4 to iPhone 5, and my wife got the iPhone 4. She promptly abandoned her Android HTC, while I am kind of getting used to iPhone 5, I can't help but admire how great is iPhone 4 and 4s design (lol) (iP 5 is nice too but..)

Who am I kidding? Obviously Apple needs to keep the 4" size, but in addittion they should also release a larger 5". Apple hasnt surprised us since the announcement of the retina macbook pro...

Maybe you should just purchase an android phone and be happy.

Why should he be forced to switch ecosystems just to get a decent screen size? I for one have invested hundreds of dollars into apps; I own an MBP and an iPad and I use iCloud. I'm entangled in Apple's services. Android phones might offer superior hardware, but they can't offer that same user experience. Just like rMBP13 I'm yearning for a bigger, badder iPhone. Doesn't mean we should just ditch iOS entirely.

So exactly whats your solution? Writing comments on this forum about it wont make much of a difference. You either use apples 4" phone or get an android phone.

I don't think the company as a whole would be doomed, but I think they would give up their position as leader of the smart phone makers. This is déjà vu for those of us who watched while apple ceded ground to Microsoft after the release of windows 95. Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.

why does apple have to be the number one? Or number 2? If they were number 3 or 4 they would still be a healthy company. HP released a failed tablet it was a complete flop. But they are still In business.

Generally speaking, Apple is a business and should generate profit.
It is well known, that in smartphones Apple receives lion's share of profits of whole of industry.
In addition, its one of most profitable companies in the world and one of most valuable (by stock) either.
So one can argue that either 3.5 or 4 inch phones actually made the company richest smartphone company in the world. There is no even a slightest reason to panic. Should Apple move to 4.85 or screen, they can easily do it. They can stay with 4 inch as well (which I think they should with one line of iPhones-regular size), they can introduce even mini at 3.5 which is perfectly great size (most of Androids are 3.5 inch), whatever. They are doing just fine.

Apple should release the iPhone 6 with a 6" screen...and an iPhone 7 with 7" screen. they should have had a 4" screen since iPhone 4....Apple is ridiculous for not going this route. and the S line iPhones are for SAME or STAYS as in the size.

Or maybe Apple should release 2 phones each year one that is larger hafway through for the people that like larger phones.

Why don't people who want bigger screens just get iPad mini's with LTE? Just use VoIP. Originally, I was kidding when I wrote that, but why not? Use a bluetooth headset and leave the iPad in your jacket pocket or briefcase.

Disclaimer, I'm fine with the 3.5" screens of the 4 & 4s. I am looking forward to getting a 5s, though.

I moved from 4S to 4 (lost in cab) then to 5 but I have to admit that 4/4S have a great size and damn great design

Well it took apple 5years to increase the iPhone to 4" screen. If the screen size is important there's plenty of androids that are 5".

Your argument ignores the fact that Apple has been offering the iPhone 4S for $99 on contract and the iPhone 4 for free on contract. They've had phones to compete in the cheap-to-free market space for years.

Apple is not the only one offering discounted or free contract phones.

Your statement ignores the fact that those are prices in the US on three major carriers with 2-year contracts. Where Apple currently has a market share lead.

Most of the world doesn't work like that. On many carriers, its the $450 iPhone 4 competing with $100-$150 Android phones in the low end markets.

i do not know if apple is doomed but the iphone5 is FAR INFERIOR TO SAMSUNG NOTE 2. the note is the first true pocket pc with phone and navigation capabilities.

iphone 5 is to note 2 what a mercedes smart car is to a full size mercedes. both good but in different leagues. the smart is ok for errands, for serious tourism or work travel yo do it on a full size mercedes, lexus or bmw.

i believe apple is falling behind because it has made the mistake of just doing design and marketing, the technological heavy lifting of smartphone key components is done by samsung and others.

Apple is another example of US short term " Harvard MBA thinking": technology is just support for marketing and sales. this is how GM, kodak, the newer HP are going down.

I know people that use both of these devices daily. They donot share your opnion what so ever. In this case these phones are equal in technology. So tell me what does the note do that the iPhone 5 can do?

And Apple will likely leave that part of the market alone to be dominated by those handsets.

The PC market isn't dominated by netbooks or $299 laptops.
The HDTV market isn't dominated by $299 TVs.
The tablet market isn't dominated by $199 tablets.
Similarly, the smartphone market isn't dominated by $100-$150 phones.

Apple doesn't need to play to that segment.

Yep. But the point of the post that you replied to was that android phones undercut Apple on price. Seems pretty straightforward.
