I can't say for sure, but I think that's how lemon laws work.

Is it lemon law or company policy? In '05 my ex had her two and a half year old iBook G3 800 replaced with the current model iBook G4 refurb. Based on that I would guess that unless his computer died the first time in week one, he will probably get a MacPro Quad Core refurb.

He wrote "I have had the logic board/hard drive/PSU replaced 6 times." Now, that is pretty much a complete replacement. How many times have you knows of a LB replaced 6 times? How many times have you known of a HD replaced 6 times in a single machine? I realize he did not say he replaced every part of the machine, but that kind of catastrophic failure might happen once. With extremely bad luck, twice. Six times....I do not believe it.

Hi... that is 6 times in total. So it was two hard drives, three logic boards and a power supply. This is actually pretty typical, since apple replaces the parts with refurbished ones.... usually they do not work. (Please do not go flaming. It is a bold statement... but from my experience with Apple... that is what I noticed.)

IMO, replacement could either be power or cost related. I do not see Apple giving you a TOTL (Top Of The Line) model because the one you bought was TOTL at the time of purchase.

Either they would give you a new Mac that's as powerful or the next step up in terms of performance from what you had (if the current new low-end Mac is more powerful than yours, you would get that); or you would get a new Mac that costs as much or more than what you paid for yours.

Either way, you are getting a Mac that is comparable to the Mac being replaced.

Although TOTL may not be possible, I would hope that they offer you something for your troubles. It would make good business sense...not only to keep you as a customer, but for you to eagerly spread the good word about :apple:: "I had big problems with the product (hey, it happens), but Apple sure took good care of me!"

I'd still push for the TOTL and I second solvs' suggestion to ask to pay the difference...AFTER it's apparent that they're not going to give it to you. :D

Good luck!

Ask if you can pay the difference.

^Definitely. If getting a Mac Pro as a replacement is a no go after asking, ask if you can pay the difference. And when doing so restate what you've gone through with this machine, work hours lost etc. Very, very good opportunity to get on a Mac Pro. Without the need to sell anything.

I believe the OP is saying he has had 6 repairs on the computer... not 6 different PowerMacs. I may be mistaken, but haven't people on this forum had PowerBooks replaced with MacBook Pros? If that is the case, I would think PowerMac G5s would be replaced with MacPros.

I had my Rev A iMac G5's logic board replaced three separate times. They finally gave me a brand new iMac, which at that point was the iMac G5 w/iSight. So, it was a substantial upgrade.

Apple computers are not infallible, so it is possible it has failed this many times.

After several flickering display problems on two different MacBooks, my local Apple store voluntarily offered to upgrade me to a MacBook Pro at no extra charge.

I'd say your virtually guaranteed a Mac Pro. The Octo might be pushing it though...

Ask for the Octo. Be polite, yet firm and persistent. Explain to them all the trouble you've gone through. Six times is ridiculous. I had to return my iMac 5 times before getting one that works decently. They offered me compensation for all the trouble (HK Speakers, which are making a bad hissing sound, so I have to return, lol). Good luck, and keep us posted

If you paid $3,000 (just a random number), I'd assume they'd give you the current $3,000 model. If anything, I'd offer to pay the difference to go up to the totl...

Good news for you,
if yours is a lemon you may have an oppurtunity to upgrade.

My friend had a 17 inch G5 Imac that was a lemon, Apple was going to give them a 20 inch Intel Core 2 duo, for $500 they were able to get a 24 inch Intel Core 2 duo with the top line graphics card a 500 gig hardrive, and 2 gigs of RAm.

That was a huge bargain.

A guy I know had some weird worm on his dual 2.0G G5. Apple can not figure out the worm so they are taking his computer, but they are sending him a 3.0G Mac Pro with the $1500 Nvidia video card and 8G of RAM.

I found this amazing.

Where he got the worm! I am going to buy a Powermac G5 with warranty off eBay right now!

okay... heres the deal..

Apple finally called me this morning and we worked out a deal:

they arent going to replace my RAM!!!

But...

They wanted to give me a quad 2.0 GHz for my powermac dual 2.7!

I tried as hard as I could to get them to upgrade me to a 3.0 GHz and they just said no. They said I could pay for the difference if I wanted to... but I refused. So I asked if I could get the Quad 2.66...

he said he would let me upgrade to that for 250 instead of the 300... I explained that that was unacceptable... and after about 10 minutes of bargaining... I got him to upgrade me to the 2.66 for $100

They are giving me a modem... wireless keyboard and mouse and the rest of the applecare that is left on my machine. (All of that is how I had the machine configured)

So... I finally accepted.

but now I am having second thoughts....

I reallllllly reallllllly want an 8 core mac pro....

So I am thinking about calling them back and asking if I can pay $500/1300 it costs to upgrade to the Mac pro.. Maybe I can barder them and get them to give it to me for under $700.

What do you think i should do..

I would be shooting myself in the foot if I didn't at least give it a try.

I need someone to reply as to what I should do please... I need to know what to say before he calls again...

You should be careful, don't want to push them away. Maybe offer to pay the difference from the 2.66Ghz to 3.0Ghz (8 core one if you want it), but don't expect a deal on this model.

I would relax. Take that computer. It is an awesome computer and your getting an awesome deal to begin with. Anything further would be more damaging and I might forget that I was going to let you upgrade for only $100 or something.

Hi,

I recently contacted Apple with reguards to the status of my powermac G5. I have a dual 2.7 GHz powermac with 4 GB of ram.

Apple said that they are going to replace my computer as soon as they get a senior technician to call me. I guess I have had enough repairs where it qualifies as a lemon law. I have had the logic board/hard drive/PSU replaced 6 times. So I was wondering... Can I expect to ask for an OctoMac?

At the time of purchasing the computer... this was the best machine on the market, which means a comparable machine to replace it would be the best machine on the market... correct? Or am I just too wishful in my thinking?

I just spoke with Steve Jobs. You qualified for an Apple ][gs with a sound card, plus a free Apple ][c carrying case.

This post would have been funnier 6 days ago, I realize. :)

I need someone to reply as to what I should do please... I need to know what to say before he calls again...

You should really just take what they're offering you and be happy with it. Since there is probably still a way for them to replace your current model I think they're being generous and you're being overly greedy.

To that I say screw you.

Seriously.

You got more than what you deserved. You choose not to wait when you knew Intel updates are imminent, you "got to enjoy" your Mac for a good one year, and now you want to upgrade your el cheapo $2800 PMG5 to a top of the line $4000 Mac Pro for a mere $700?

If you want it pay for it. Apple has been nothing but fair to you. If I were the CSO I'd hang up on you until you find it acceptable. It is not Apple's business to shoot themselves in the foot just because some tard has a bizarre sense of the word "fair dinkum".

You are being too greedy. You should've just took that 2.0Ghz Mac Pro and be happy:) . It still will give you the performance you want and you could always upgrade the ram, hard drive and graphics card.

You should really just take what they're offering you and be happy with it. Since there is probably still a way for them to replace your current model I think they're being generous and you're being overly greedy.

I agree. You're going from a used 2.7 Dual G5 to a brand new quad 2.66 Mac Pro for $100 and you're complaining? Stop being so greedy and be thankful that they're not just giving you a refurbished model of the same specs. Of course you don't get an TOTL octo.. why the heck would you?

Now, if you want to call back and ask if you can pay the full retail difference from a 2.66 MP to the octo, then by all means go ahead - and I'm sure they'll let you. But to try to barter (or worse - EXPECT) a discount? Please.

You know, I thought he was being overly greedy from the start. You sir, are a jerk. Sure they should make it right, but I am sure you were rather firm and probably mean when trying to get what you wanted.

You make me sick.
