I thought that he was being greedy from the beginning as well. I didn't think it was horrible that he was hoping for an octo core machine, but he seems to have went from wanting it to demanding it. The people at Apple are giving you a pretty good deal and you're still demanding more.

This is one of the funniest threads I've seen in while.

you can pay to upgrade from what they are offering you to the 8core mac pro, but having the "top of the line" does not mean you will get the "top of the line" when it is replaced.

Its a feature for feature match, nothing more, nothing less. :)

Have fun and enjoy the new computer

So when would we be expecting Penryn in these machines? Or is that totally different?

Also... I am not demanding anything. I am actually very very exited for my new computer coming! I really want something that works... after having an inactive POS for such a long time.

Please do not get me wrong... I am extremely grateful for what I have right now... I just would be upset at myself if I didn't even "try" to go for the TOTL. If it were you... you would probably do the same thing. And I am being far from obnoxious when I am on the phone with the cust. serv. agent. He's a nice guy... why would I try to still him?

That was a random question but Penryn is a 45 nm dual-core, 3-6 MiB L2 cache mobile micropressor that will be introduced in late 2007. Probably MacWorld 2008 is when Penryn arrives in mobile macs. Mac Pros will probably use something else.
You got to stop being so greedy and now you are thinking about getting a Penryn. Wow. Just be happy about what you got and be glad that Apple at least gave you a chance about a replacement.

In response to SSM (forgot to hit reply) :

Even with a ridiculously high failure rate of 10%, the chance of getting 6 bad parts in a row is .0001%.

Knock that down to a more realistic 5%, and you have a .0000016% chance.

You are being too greedy. You should've just took that 2.0Ghz Mac Pro and be happy:) . It still will give you the performance you want and you could always upgrade the ram, hard drive and graphics card.

Agreed. Be happy with what they gave you and be done with it.

Why don't you take the 2.66 for $100, sell it on eBay, and then buy this octo-core you wanted? That way you are both getting what you deserve from Apple, getting a discounted upgrade, getting a brand new machine, and getting exactly what you want--without screwing over Apple, being greedy, or ignoring depreciation.

Okay?

Although he might be being a little bit greedy, I understand where he's coming from. It's such a pain in the butt to get repairs done on a computer - I can imagine how frustrated he is after all those repairs. However, the machine they're offering him is probably way better than whatever he had before...it's like someone having a 17" G5 iMac and Apple offering to upgrade to the 20" C2D...but he's pushing for the 24! I would say, take what they're offering you and be happy with it..most other computer companies probably wouldn't do this. It's not like they're giving you any lesser of a machine...Good luck!

Because he could just pay the difference and get the Octo right off the bat. But he doesn't want to have to pay. He isn't even happy with the $100.

Seriously. Pie. To the face.

If your are unhappy with the hardware replacement offer why not ask for your money back plus accrued interest, and lost productivity compensation.

That total should be well above the cost of an 8-core mac. Apple should do the right thing here, look how many problems he's had with this. Its insane, its crazy, it deserves to be made right.

That being said, the cust. service agent on the end of the phone, probably has no authority to do what would be, in my opinion, necessary in rectify this extremely crazy scenario. You'd need to get to his bosses boss, someone with authority to say "holy bleep this guys been through the bleeping ringer, we gotta make this right."

If it were me, I'd ask for the cash compensation as detailed above or the octomac and if neither of those work then I'd let them know I'm considering finding a lawyer to get involved in this crazy mess, with the disclaimer that you really don't want to do that and all you really want is to be a happy customer of Apple's.

a lawyer? what do you want apple to do? they are offering a replacement that is significantly better than his original machine. why are they forced to give this guy a top of the line octo???

i wouldnt be surprised at all if you actually read the warranty and it stated any replacement will be of the same model or of equivalent performance. so id read that first foremost. you may find they are being generous on their end

compensation for lost work hahaha pleeeeaase. im sure they have their tails covered in this respect. once again probably stated in the warranty as these are after all what people rely on for work.

Dumbest post I ever read. A lawsuit? It's nuts like you who make this country a lawsuit-happy country. He's getting a great upgrade for a great price.. sheesh..

I've had multiple pro-audio units fail on me for no reason. I've waited patiently for months while they got fixed repeatedly. I did not file any lawsuit, or ask for an upgrade. God, it's electronics.. sh#t happens. Money back plus interest, plus compensation for productivity lost.. lol.

The OP WILL get a Mac Pro after all, Apple is pushing intel machines. If it were an iPod, you'll get the exact same iPod you purchased because the have lots of iPods. It's HIGLY UNLIKELY however, to be an Octo Core version.

I think the 2.66 would be a reasonable replacement for his old machine. However, I do think it's unreasonable for Apple to expect him to accept a machine with less RAM than the old one. It would currently cost $700 to upgrade to 4GB and, when he originally purchased, it would probably have cost more than this. This is particularly unfair, considering that Apple makes a killing on RAM upgrades anyway.

If it was me, that would be my main point of contention.

Not true

It seems that everyone here is mad that they had to buy their new intel computer, but this guy who purchased a PPC (but bad) system, couldn't join the post oct clan without paying. And when he was able to get one, it pissed some(most) of you guy off. If he was able to get a 8core system for free I say good for you. Grow up.:apple:

It depends, If you configured the computer with the ram from Apple then they would put the same amount of ram in the new computer. If you purchased the ram after and not from Apple then they have no reason to replace the ram.

They should at least give back the "old ram"

Your (and SSM's) mathematical analysis is not only naive, it's meaningless!

You're just calculating the chance of six totally unconnected parts failing individually.

Remember that you always find what you're looking for in the last place you look!

As the last part to be replaced on this guy's machine turned out to be the power supply, isn't it more than likely that the defective PSU was responsible for munching the motherboards, and maybe even the hard drives too?

Er... no. We're mad because they offered him a perfectly acceptable replacement, above and beyond, with the option to upgrade for a nominal fee, and he's still not happy because they didn't offer him something worth a lot more. We empathize with his situation. Sucks that his other computer didn't work. We just think he should be more than happy with a machine that's better than comparable that's being offered. Or just to suck it up and pay the extra for the higher machine.

Someone needs to grow up, and it ain't us.
