More profit than Exxon? I think they're doing okay. Yes, we all want to know about their products ASAP, but no, I don't see the argument for it hurting Apple.

Secretive with good reason. Apple would collapse under the Osborne Effect if they were too public about the next latest and greatest before release.

They are now listed as the number 1 profiting company. They beat Exxon out. They have more avalable cash the the US government. Yes it hurts them big time.
Wrong.

Apple is the most valuable company in the stock market. They are DEFINTIELY not the most profitable. Two completely different things.

Walmart takes the profit cake every single year by a LONG margin.

Apple is a company that has built up such a high image of their products. They don't need to release leaks because the speculation of not knowing anything leaves people wanting more. I'm sure there are some people that get pissed off by this, but not enough to hurt Apple's bottom line. That being said, I wouldn't mind a slight leak being released just to give me something while I wait

This a million times over.

When companies leak to early, people get excited, then they lose interest because once the product they have been waiting for is released it seems "old" since they've been reading about it and know everything about it already.

Apple keeps everything secret and once they announce it, its available immediately (or close to immediately) and people get excited, they rush out and buy the product, and Apple makes money off of the excited people. Once those people show their friends the cool product, word spreads.

This strategy has worked for Apple for a long time.

LONG margin? Apple made $14.0 billion in 2010. Walmart made $14.3 billion.

Q1 2011
AAPL $6.0 billion
WMT $6.1 billion

Q2 2011
AAPL $7.3 billion
WMT $3.4 billion

I have no idea whether Apple is the most profitable public company, but they currently beat Walmart.

You guys are big koolaid drinkers when it comes to Apple. Once again i say BS, there were several pictures of the first iPhone well before it was released.
Keep it secret? Have you ever heard of Macworld where they tell you whats new and coming in the near future. Just so happens Apple stopped doing Macworld a couple years ago for whatever reason. Maybe they are going to do something else but c-mon.....if your buying "Apple does everything secret", then your just living in a dream world where only Apple exists and nothing else and for some reason you are happily content with that.
Maybe they pulled out because Steve was/is very frail and he wanted to be the one on stage showing off everything like he always did along with some of his colleagues. Who knows, but they havent always been keeping things a secret.

I never said they keep everything secret. They are just more secretive than other companies when it comes to their products. I'm not saying they've always done this (and maybe this wasn't the case in the past), but currently this is how they are.

Look at Walmarts revenue. It's in the 400 billions. Apple doesn't come close to that.

However, you are right that revenue /= profits.

IDC though, because if Walmart could cut on some operating costs, they could be the most profitable easy. Their yearly revenue is insane.

Maybe YOU didnt but somebody did that i quoted. I honestly dont care if they are being secret or not but the reasons posters are saying they are being secret is funny. I mean c-mon, the new phone will have the same OS you all have been using for two months now. How secret is that? The face of the iPhone will most likely look the same as it always does and if your lucky you will have a bigger screen. IMO it would be a disapointment if it isnt bigger and you never know, Apple is slow to give people what they want

I don't care so much about every detail or even images about the product being 'leaked'. I would just like some info on a projected release date. If it's soon, I'll wait it out to at least see what the new hardware has in store.

If it's to be released alongside iOS 5 this 'Fall', let us know. That's still vague enough where they can have delays and not look foolish by missing a projected date. And on the flip side, if they have no intention of getting new hardware to the public before, say, 2012...let us know.

That's not too much to ask. And while it won't be enough to hurt their bottom line, they will lose customers who are still using the 3G/s and need to update asap.

This is a good point too. As of right now the release date is speculation. Having at least the vague fall release date (as you stated) would be nice.

What else could they change? Yeah we all want the face to change on our phones every couple months like teh awsum Droidz. And same OS we have been using for 2 months, who are you talking about because im sure as hell 99.999999999% of iPhone users havent been using it. Put down the Samsung Kool-Aid bro and leave the iPhone forum, your annoying.

It seems to piss a lot of people off that they keep things so secret all the time. All other companies show pics (or leaks) of their products well before the release. I would think that they would at least do a silent leak of the iPhone 5 to try and deter people from switching platforms or buying the new Droids or Blackberry's that are coming out at this time. Anyone else have the same thoughts?

Apple is one of the two wealthiest companies in the world. No, I don't think they are hurting themselves.

First of all, i never said a thing about Android OR Samsung. Didnt compare them at all so you going there was off the point. The iPhone face has NEVER changed so its not a matter of changing every couple of months, its a matter of changing it once!!! How about one time in its 5th year! There has been many suggestions in here as to what some would like to see that Apple could do.

As for the OS, many have downloaded it and are using iOS 5. OK, not everyone but many are using it since early June. The new features are known to everyone so it isnt a "secret" which has been the basis of my point since some(maybe you, i dont recall) are saying Apple keeps things secret which isnt true, but they seem to be doing that some in this case as far as the new phone.

Maybe if you kept up with the point of it instead of just getting mad because you think someone is bashing Apple, then maybe you wouldnt be annoyed because what is annoying is the guy who doesnt get the point and goes off about something i never mentioned which was Android and Samsung.
Your Koolaid of choice is clear!

Why on earth will you leak the design of your next killer phone to your competitors for copying?

Ever hear of Osborne Effect?

IMO what is really hurting Apple is the HUGE delay for the iPhone 5. If it's October we'd expect Samsung to have a very very good results this quarter, at the expense of Apple's revenue. Everyone knows that iPhone 4 is very old now and expect the new iPhone to arrive before the end of September.

Well think about it, if they werent as secretive the other manufactures would copy them even faster than they do now. When they hold there events it's on the news for god sakes, then about an hour later it's on there site. It gives enupf hype for the general public, us techies and gives the copy cats no time to rebound. Every rumor and leak just get us more hyped anyway. They probably figure they will lose more buisness if they get copied than just being secretive.

Hmm, who did Apple copy this last time? They(Apple) only put out a new phone every year so if someone wants to copy, it will happen. Apple is doing it now so its all relative.

You answered your own question by making a thread....

NOPE

I'm sorry but by using the term "kool-aid drinkers" you just effectively showed your lack of maturity.

Learn about marketing and sales. Hype is one of the best things a company can hope for with a product and Apple is a master at hype. Thats not even opinion.

Your the one that said Apple keeps things secret:

Really? You must suffer from short term memory loss. I bow to your maturity and marketing genius
