Speculation by more then dozens of rumor sites including this ONE and it was all based on insider information and most of the time they have been pretty accurate.

If I am wrong, try finding at least one article regardless of whether from Apple or third party quoting that iOS4.2 or rather iOS4.2.1 was delivered on schedule.

Again, articles and rumors don't mean squat, even when posted on this site. There was no delay since there was no announcement. You can scream all you want about it and cry in fetal position, it doesn't change the facts.

Articles about it being on time or lack thereof don't change that either. When do people bother to write a paper on something that shipped on time anyhow ? Apple had set one deadline : November 2010. They met it.

I don't have to because I am sure it won't do any good. It's just ludicrous to think that newer software is going to work as well on two year old hardware. Apple should just do security updates for the 3G. I don't expect the 3GS to handle 5.0 very well otherwise I'd feel we are getting jipped.

Exactly my point, all those users would have been happy with a security update then crippling their phone with iOS4. Unless of course the point is to force old users to upgrade, well we will see when 5.0 hits your 3Gs.

Apple has never publicly set any deadline on 4.2, even the November release was based on insider sources. This is common Apple modus operandi, no surprise there, hence the reason for sites like this and hence the reason why people visit sites like this - to keep themselves informed.

I don't blame anal people like you who wait for a black and white from Steve Jobs himself. Your ignorance of other source of information only serves to show your foolishness.

Actually Apple did say November.

Straight from the horse's mouth too...

Sorry Apple never said a specific date. Please show me/us when they said a specific November date. Not from a rumor site, not from a news blog, but from Apple.

If it doesn't come from Apple it is just that a rumor.

I can't believe all this fuss just because there is no Apple black and white on a specific date.

Yes they did announce November and they delivered on November but it could have landed sooner in November and evidence of that lies in the ONE in 4.2.1
Apple is not going to have a press conference announcing that they ran into WiFi issues and has seeded a new version.

Obviously all of this is irrelevant to you because "Apple didn't inform us about it" and it falls under your so called "rumor"

Well rumor or not, it is good enough and especially the case when the rumor matches the action which has taken place.

Now, this thread title reads: Is Apple Losing Market Share w/ The iPhone, if you have something constructive to say towards that end then by all means proceed but if you are going to continue arguing about Apple's black and white vs information from other sites then please stop wasting my time and yours.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8C148)

Interesting to note, that if HTC or Moto announced a white phone or delayed it, nobody would give a damn. Apple delays it and it's all over the news. Now that is some serious mindshare.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (S60; SymbOS; Opera Mobi/498; U; en-GB) Presto/2.4.18 Version/10.00)

not really only made it to tech bloggs. antenna issues made it to mainstream news.

*LTD* doesn't acknowledge the existence of the antenna issues.

I'll flip this around. I can't believe all the fuss about a date that was never announced? A month was announced but not a date in said month. You even acknowledged Apple delivered in November.

BTW, what's the delay with you admitting you were wrong ? It's all over the blogs and rumor sites that v5point0 was going to admit being wrong on November 25th, yet here we are on the 26th and you still claim you weren't wrong.

What's up with that ? Stop delaying and do it already!

As more smartphone choices enter the market, yes, Apple will lose market share. Apple has never competed in "marketshare". They make products that they think are good, and that have a good margin.

Being good and profitable > having the most marketshare.

In the PC market, Dell's fall from #1 marketshare to near bankruptcy is a great example of that.

Marketshare is obviously important to Apple otherwise SJ wouldn't cite the most recent iPhone, iTunes statistics at the start of any Media Event, or Keynote ( in the past ).

Marketshare is important to any company.. losing marketshare relative to the growth industry == failing company.

Having a 3G myself, I am not too keen in upgrading to the iPhone 4 and likely moving to Androids in the future.

You're like the people who complained when Windows Vista came out and didn't run well on their pentium 2 PC that originally came with windows 98.

Buy a new phone. Your hardware is outdated, obviously it isn't going to run the latest software flawlessly.

(I had a 3G for 2.5 years and just upgraded to the 4 a month ago).

There are a ton of things apple could do to make significant gains in PC marketshare. And they won't, just to gain marketshare. That's what I mean about it not being important. As long as they're making products that lead a category, and they're doing it profitably, Apple is happy. Even if they don't have the top marketshare.

Point being, Apple will not retain the #1 marketshare spots in either the smartphone or tablet markets. It's bragging rights while they have it, but losing that title will do nothing negative to their bottom line.

If Apple really was only concerned about market share, they would license IOS to other manufactures--obviously that is not something they will do.

I saw people whine about buying a new computer loaded with Vista and it ran like ****

They tried that and needless to say it didn't work

Mindshare+Profits>Marketshare

You are dense. Relying on rumors or insider info - even if they are "most of the time correct" - is SPECULATION. Nothing else.

All your "good enough" and "most of the time" statements are piss poor arguments. It's why the news media these days are being ripped apart all the time. You cannot rely on good enough or most of the time.

Agreed.

Though, Apple have to maintain a good level of marketshare, others, like we've seen with regards to their computers, 3rd party software / hardware players become disinterested in the Apple platform, which leads to a less diserable computer for the consumer.

Only recently have 3rd party players become interested in Apple once again due to its increased marketshare, for example, AutoCad and Steam ( new player ).

There are certain sacrifices Apple simply won't make just to gain share. And they'd be right - absolutely right in their concerns about what, for example, "opening up" OS X would mean: a *********, Windows-like experience.

We all see what's going on with junk-box makers like Acer preloading their plastic containers of circuits with Windows. No thanks.

Besides:

Then there's the iPad, of course. Which will be a huge seller this holiday season.

This holiday quarter will be massive for Apple. Quite likely their biggest quarter ever - holiday or non-holiday.

Wow show me these blogs and rumor sites.

Show me that Apple released 4.2 (not 4.2.1) this month and I will admit I am wrong. 4.2 was the announced release after all. Had that been bug free, it would have been released earlier. That is all I am saying, is that so hard for you to see?

If Apple really was only concerned about market share, they would license IOS to other manufactures--obviously that is not something they will do.

Exactly, they'd have to license it for the same price as Android i.e. nothing. Otherwise there would be only be interest from a handful of handset makers as they have a free alternative.

And Apple doesn't have Googles services or ad platform in order to make money from any share they pick up.

And if they wanted to continue selling their own hardware then they would have to reduce prices to compete against all the iOS clones.
