It's amazing that our automobiles can go years without a complete refresh, but our technology must get a complete refresh every year in order for some people to be completely happy.

Most cars feature a redesign every 4-5 years and many times end up looking completely different. This will be the 6th gen iPhone, time for a redesign.

When people start thinking about improvements to the iPad and iPhone they should start looking at the macbook pros and iMacs for reference. The design has rarely changed over the years and for good reason. Yes their are annual changes but those include changes to the guts and not design. Remember, Apple doesn't just change throw things at a wall a d hope it sticks I.e, android. They make purposeful, evolutionary changes.

Evolution is random. In fact, it seems to me that introducing a variety of models and culling the unpopular ones, the Android platform is 'evolving'. Mind you, there is nothing about evolution that guarantees optimality.

Yeah but is that Darwinian model what's best for the user. Offering a crapload of devices and leaving it up to the consumer to evolve the product
Line?. Most people don't have time or care enough to wade through hundreds of devices. That is the whole problem with Android they rely on the customers to evolve the product line. Apple on the other hand builds a handful of great products and takes the burden off the customer. Thus making for a pleasurable hassle free experience which in turn brings repeat customers.

There will be a redesign, but keep in mind Apple has already reinvented the phone with iPhone 1, just like Henry Ford did with the car and the Model T. Apples business model with the iPhone is a redesign every 2 years with a spec bump the following year. There have been 3 radically different iPhones with the iPhone 1, 3G, and the iPhone 4. The 3GS, and the 4S were the spec bumps. Again to reiterate my initial sentiment, people expect a complete redesign from Apple every single year, even though most of us sign 2 year contracts anyway.

I am also beginning to think that this is why iPad is losing its market share to android Also for the iPhone. This could be like the original Macintosh. It wasn't selling good but Steve believed it was a hot seller from the start.

Where on earth do you get that silly notion?
