Your homeowners or renters insurance will cover theft.

Yeah, not sure about that. I called them yesterday to see if that is indeed the case, or if there is a separate rider we can add that will cover our phones with a small deductible. Haven't heard back.

My understanding is the AppleCare price will be going up with the 6s release. At that price is it even worth it? Would it be better to just use the Verizon insurance at $11.99 a month.
Well…ask yourself if you'd rather deal with Apple or Asurion.

Asurion. A company that has used non-Apple OEM parts for their refurb replacements. Quite a few people here have reported being denied warranty service from Apple because their Asurion replaced iPhone had non-Apple parts.

The quality of an Apple refurb versus the quality of an Asurion refurb.

I know which replacement I'd rather have.

As a general rule, they're covered. But yeah, you'd have to check with your company to make sure.

I have apple store nex to me and go square trade this year, it is 99 dollars instead of 129, deductable 75 instead of 99 and 4 claims instead pf 2. The only if: if they don't change proce for 6s.
If I break my phone, I go apple to fix it or 299 dollars out of warranty swap.
Apple wants too much for 129.

Disadvantage: I have to pay out of the pocket at apple store and wait for a check couple days. I cannot exchage over mail with Apple. Squaretrade repair sucks.

Ha...yeah they're technically covered by our homeowner's policy, but our deductible is 0.5% of our house value, so that makes it no good.

Gdit.

Wow, you need to get better homeowners insurance. That's a pretty crappy deal they gave you.

If you keep the phone for two years then yeah Maybe it is.

As I don't believe you can transfer applecare from one device to another

How long you keep the phone doesn't mean anything. You can call Apple and get reimbursed for any unused AppleCare+ coverage that is left.

And I'm not paying $11.99/mo AND $199 per replacement.

Exactly.. I keep my phones for 1 year or less and always cancel AppleCare for a refund. The only time this wont work is if you have had a replacement... but then... It paid for itself already.

I called applecare yesterday and they said I can't transfer my care from my 6 to a 6s and they couldn't cancel my applecare for a pro-rated refund since its been a year. Do you remember how long you had applecare when you canceled it?

You know, I had forgotten about the out of warranty swap for $299 (for the non-plus version).

So, let's break this down using a couple of scenarios. Correct me if any of my understandings/assumptions/math is wrong (quite possible).

Scenario 1 - Lost/Stolen Phone

With Applecare+:
$129 for base cost of Applecare+ (which provides no coverage on a lost or stolen phone)
+
$749 for a new phone (assumes 64GB non-plus model)
=
$878 Total

Without Applecare+:
$749 for a new phone

Winner: not having Applecare+

Scenario 2 - Major damage from a drop

With Applecare+:
$129 for base cost of Applecare+
+
$99 per incident fee (deductible)
=
$229 Total

Without Applecare+:
$299 for out-of-warranty swap (assumes 64GB non-plus model)

Winner: Applecare+ by what I consider a small margin ($70)

Scenario 3 - No damage to phone before you are ready to sell/upgrade

With Applecare+:

$129 for base cost of Applecare+

Without Applecare+:
$0

Winner: not having Applecare+

If my understanding/assumptions/math is correct, it doesn't seem that Applecare+ is really worth it especially with Apple's out-of-warranty service for ~$299.

This is from the AppleCare website. This applies to the US. Have you had any claims? That would affect the refund.

ii) If you cancel more than thirty (30) days after your receipt of this Plan, you will receive a pro rata refund of the original purchase price. The pro rata refund is based on the percentage of unexpired Plan Term from the Plan’s date of purchase, less (a) a cancellation fee of twenty-five ($25) dollars or ten percent (10%) of the pro-rata amount, whichever is less, and (b) the value of any service provided to you under the Plan.

Major damage X 2 replacements would be $300 cheaper butter fingers :)

Sure, but this is a pretty unlikely scenario for most people. Is my math correct on the other 3 scenarios or am I missing something? If correct, Applecare+ seems like a poor value to me for MOST people.

My luck would be I would break it on the first week and no out of warranty pricing would be available. Since I upgrade and cancel every year, I gamble on 50% of the purchase price.

I read that before I called but they still denied me. I'm going to call back right now.

What is the OOW replacement cost for a 6/6+?

What is the OOW screen repair cost? That is where the real money saver is by not getting AC+ with the new prices. Most people do not have a total loss on their phone and need the $299 service; however a broken screen may actually cost you more to fix with AC+ than without it, which really defeats the purpose of insurance.

As it stands now, it will cost $129 to get your screen fixed without AC+, it will cost you $229 with it ($129 up front, $99 incident). Why the hell would I buy AC+? I expect the 6S to cost more to fix the screen, but will it be $100 more? or even near enough to consider getting issuance for?

You are dead on. Only makes sense if you replace more than once. 2 Replacements...go with square trade its a bit cheaper.

also i expect the new screen will mean the OOW cost will be higher.

It is a pleasure to see educated people here. I like your definition, you've just sent me back to school in my dreams :)
Thanks

47 bucks. I took it on a gift card but they could have refunded to credit card. I don't think I'll buy applecare again for the S.
They can also mail you a check if your CC is not in file, but make sure you have correct address in itunes profile. Also be ready you be transfered 2-4 times to get to the correect agent. It is better to call in the morning, night time takes forevere
