well seeing as i upset a few fellas in the other thread, i guess this is a better place to post up images of the 17" matte verion:

I personally think it looks heaps better than the glossy(with a black edge)

Thanks for the pics. I have the 15" uMBP, and I agree, I like the silver boarder much better. If I could have gotten it in the same type of matte, I would have.

I like the sharpness and the screens' vibrancy, but the black boarder looks so pc to me, and even more important, it reflects terribly, even if the screen itself isn't reflecting.

It does, it really does. The way that elegant piece of glass was taken out. Mmmm. The silver bezel with the black rubber trim and the black hinge. Two features that don't match the silver but Apple was too lazy to switch out. Sexy, sexy, sexy.

Hey, if you dying for a half thought out a franken-book simply because you fear change, this is the machine for you.

Yeah, I agree. Black with aluminum doesn't match. That's why the keys are black. In fact I remember when everyone used to say that HP and Sony were awful due to the black keyboards with gray cases. Then the MBA came and everyone changed their mind, because Apple told them to.

But... please... I cannot understand why people like Mark2000 cannot accept other people have different opinions than theirs (this time you didn't use "mattetards", did you? How many more warnings do you need?). I strive to understand: but I simply cannot.

I agree that the version with the silver bezel is much better. The current line of notebook is too similar to many cheap PCs with a cheap appearance.

It's not my fault you're a show pony?

Usability is what Apple prides itself on. How about making the screen more usable?

Lots of people don't want reflections or fingerprints. It's really not that hard to understand.

We all admit that glossy has deeper blacks, and more saturated colours, big deal? It's not like anyone's asking for the glossy to stop anyway, we just want an option.

yuck, yuck, yuck.

I must admit. when I first saw the 15" unibody, I thought the big black bezel was nasty and figured I would just get a previous model when I bought a 17".

I'm happy to say that the black bezel looks much nicer on the 17" than the 15" I don't mind the glossy as I can control the light in my office.

I also wanted to bring up a point here. look at this picture from mac-menace:

Everyone complains about glare from the glossy and that you cant see the screen. well, here is your matte screen, with lights in the picture, is that any better?

Exactly, at least the reflection in the glossy looks sharp, however in the matte it looks diffused and more annoying in my opinion.

Again and again...
Glossy, matte, glassy, matte: CHOICE. There should be choice. We have choices on every other OS platform, all but OS X. We end up paying a premium price for Apple notebook, there should be choice at least. In the current product line you can choose only the screen on a MBP17. May be the only solution is switching to other platforms.

Even if you can control reflections from light sources and other bright objects, in a bright environment you end up working this way. Unacceptable.

What's ridiculous to me is that every time someone posts a new Matte vs Glossy thread, instead of just referring to the dozens of existing threads on the topic, people start the same arguments all over again! Nothing new is ever offered.... just a repeat of the exact same comments! The bottom line is that some prefer matte (for whatever reasons are important to them) and some prefer glossy (for whatever reasons are important to them). I doubt anyone is going to change their preference based on anything said in a forum. This topic has been beat to death!

Lucky us then that this is not a Matte vs Glossy thread!!!. The OP is just asking if there's a general tendency to move towards glossy screens, not only in computers, but in everything with an LCD screen. I would like to know that too and specially, what are the reasons behind it (cheaper for manufacturers? Real improvement for generic users?)

You do have a choice. For the high end consumers, who want a matte option, you need to buy a 17" and pay $450 more to get a matte screen.:D

If that was a glossy screen the reflection would be 10x worse, in my opinion.

It would be, no doubt about it. My point was just that in bright light conditions, the matte is no holy grail, its just as bad, but in a different way, at least to my eyes.

Of course it isn't, obviously they decided to provide an antiglare option on the 17" for kicks.

Lots better. The light is heavily attenuated. Rather than act like a sharp point source of light, it's diffused and not nearly as intense as if the light was simply reflected as a mirror.

Silver bezel looks terrible IMO. With the dark rubber, it looks like there are two borders around the screen. It's just sloppy and distracting.

Oh man! Seriously? I don't respect people's opinions? You and like two other matte-aficionados hijack every freaking thread to talk about the evil gloss. You've tried it twice in the ship dates thread. If a matte/glossy thread goes off the front page you make another one so we don't forget. You personally have posted those pics of your laptop in direct sunlight 5 or 6 times. When are you going to give it up? When exactly have you said your piece? You should put a number on it so i can silently count it off and only bother you when you exceed it.

You know what this is like? Street preachers. People who think they are so right they need to shout it at you every moment. Excuse me if I'm a passer by who thinks you're loud and obnoxious.

You don't like gloss. The whole internet gets it. Go do something about it. You've acknowledged in other threads that there are options like screen replacement and simple stick on filters. It'll cost you $15. But you won't do it. You just want complaining rights. So go on and continue. Complain some more. We're all dying to hear it.

My issue is not with the glossy screens, but with the GLASS screens. The glossy screens on the older macbooks and macbook pros were fine for me in almost all conditions. However, the glass screens are a totally different story. Reflection issues in the glass screens are so much worse than the previous model's glossy screens. My sister recently bought a white Macbook and I compared her screen with my glassbook and the difference was amazing. It actually made me wish that I had purchased one of the older models due to the difference. With the new models, not only are there distracting reflections on the screen itself, but there are distracting reflections in the black bezel too. I think it was a mistake for Apple to go with the all glass black bezel and screen as it makes it almost impossible to create a matte option that doesn't compromise the rest of the design. Yes the 17 inch anti-glare is a nice option but the black border and black hinge totally clash with the silver bezel. I will never understand why Apple didn't just go with the all silver design of the Macbook Air for the other notebooks. That would've been perfect, IMO.

As humans our role is to adapt to given situations. So if you choose a glossy screen and you have reflections, adapt to your surroundings. If you have a matte and the sunlight is diffusing your screen, adapt, and go inside.

This is being beaten to death. I wish I could drive my car underwater but I can't. These products have their limitations so our role as the consumer is to either A) Adapt to the given limitations and make them best fit our life styles B) Don't buy it.

Personally I am going to go for gloss. I am a web designer, and I understand the limitations the glass screen is going to give me. I am not concerned over color accuracies because I'm designing for the web. I can't predict the thousands of users color profiles, its just not possible. This has influenced my choice.

I think the main thing people seem to be overlooking here is that this product is not a perfect solution to anything. Regardless of matte or glass, you will have to adapt to your surroundings when you use either of the products.

There is so much overblown hyperbole and fallacy in that argument. I can't believe it. Red Herring strikes again!

You respect opinions of others and invite to shut up, because of loudness. Basically my nick is in the same threads where yours is, but I am the preacher. Nice touch.

Since discussions are repeated all over, with the same questions and the same wrong answers from the same people who have already said enough (like me) on the subject, I post those pictures because I think they might be useful. I know: the pictures do not change. I promise: I will take some new ones.

It's not my goal to make you that nervous. Look: it is not very difficult to skip all the messages labeled with my nick (it's on the left).

Hmmm...I am sorry, you are right! I will buy a matted screen Apple. Hmm how about a 15.4" laptop which is big enough to carry. Oh wait I can't get it in a matt screen. Hmm..well, how about an iMac. Oops! nope, matt screen there too. Ok, I know, I know...how about a Mac Pro desktop with the Cinema display. Wait don't tell me that the cinema Display is also a glossy screen.

So, the only computer for graphic designer's is the 17" screen. WOW, that's a larger cmputer bag to dorky designers will be carrying. I wonder if people will know I am lugging a 17" computer around the city!!!! Great job Apple. Keep up the good work in providing for your professionals!;)

Wait! To top it off. I have to spend and additional $50 for the anti-glared screen. I guess Apple thinks that all Graphic Designers can spend close to $4000 for a computer plus make an extra $50. I LOVE YOU APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hmm... I wonder what college kids who are studying Graphic Design will have to buy. I guess I'll tell my students to spend as much money possible and buy a 17"!

unfortunately no thread is about the panel itself! its always about personal taste. for me the main issue is which is the BETTER PANEL? ok same resolution thats for sure :) however i read frequently that the glassy and the matte screen have two different panels?! some say the matte is going to be the 2008 17" mbp's screen. nobody seems to be interested in the actual quality of the panels..... likely its because nobody really knows the difference... :( i hope there will be more information when they get delivered because i will order one of them beginning of april :)
regards and calm down :D
