Hmmm...I am sorry, you are right! I will buy a matted screen Apple. Hmm how about a 15.4" laptop which is big enough to carry. Oh wait I can't get it in a matt screen. Hmm..well, how about an iMac. Oops! nope, matt screen there too. Ok, I know, I know...how about a Mac Pro desktop with the Cinema display. Wait don't tell me that the cinema Display is also a glossy screen.

So, the only computer for graphic designer's is the 17" screen. WOW, that's a larger cmputer bag to dorky designers will be carrying. I wonder if people will know I am lugging a 17" computer around the city!!!! Great job Apple. Keep up the good work in providing for your professionals!;)

Wait! To top it off. I have to spend and additional $50 for the anti-glared screen. I guess Apple thinks that all Graphic Designers can spend close to $4000 for a computer plus make an extra $50. I LOVE YOU APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hmm... I wonder what college kids who are studying Graphic Design will have to buy. I guess I'll tell my students to spend as much money possible and buy a 17"!
:D

i bet your students will show very similar results with glossy screens :)
imo as a matter of fact there is no matte and no glossy notebook screen out there (yet) which can do 'real graphic design' or color calibration. so tell them to buy a mb and an eizo which would be about the cost you are talking about :D

You respect opinions of others and invite to shut up, because of loudness.

I never asked you to shut up. I just asked you when you think enough is enough.

So I guess you are going to make this your job forever? Good luck. I hope this life is fulfilling for you.

Please. Do you really think attaching two pictures requires much longer than your writing comments advices about life?

I have been to CES 2009 in Las Vegas, and yes it's true, everything is moving to glossy. Samsung, LG, and other brands, all showed glossy TV displays. Darker blacks ? Richer colors ? To me they look unnatural, and I saw my face reflected on all of them.

The whole mirror effect is what makes me sick.
Fine if people like it, but give an option. So I went antiglare on my 17".

Exactly! Well spoken.

Why take away the option? Especially when you are charging $50 for it? You are only going to provide the option on one computer? I was all about the 17" (beautiful Hi-rez screen) but when I lugged it around the city (on the train, subway, coffee shop, etc.) it was large and heavy. The 15.4" is big too but now I see it as just right for a mobile laptop and pair it up with a display and you have the best of both worlds.

I know what people are saying and yes we could beat this topic for ever. It's just frustrating when you want something and can't get it. Especially when you are going to be spending lots of money. I'll wait to see the anti-glared in the stores (they better display them!). Maybe the new 17" won't be as larger. What also makes it tough is if everything is going to glossy or has gone to glossy, then maybe it is smarter to get a glossy and learn to adapt. I would hate to have my laptop with a matted sceen but my separated display in a glossy becasue that is all you can find.

Just to throw this out there, but weren't all of our first computers glossy or glassy screens? Until the LCD screens came out, all screens where glass and glossy. Hmm... and we didn't complain back then. Did I just answer the problem?

When I bought my first computer (a common beige box) I had a window behind me and I had to rotate my whole room to accomodate this. Still I kept seeing reflections, and bought one of those horrible antireflective panels that I put on top of it. When I first saw an LCD screen I said "wonderful! no more reflections!", and now we have glass which is much worse than CRT monitors (since they had a kind of antireflective feature)
However, sorry, but your point makes no sense: 80 years ago there was no TV, 20 years ago there was no Internet, 15 years ago diesel cars produced horrible smoke, and so on...and nobody complained. It's called technology progress.

From what I can remember laptops have always pretty much been LCD matte.

Yes, the earlier CRT monitors for desktops had reflection, but most people would prefer a glossy screen for a desktop because they have more control over the lighting conditions where ever they set it up.

We're talking about non reflective screens required for laptops, which some of us use because they're are PORTABLE

Even if I can't resist chiming in every time I see those glossy/matte thread, the debate will never come to an end. I think everybody just wants one thing: an option.
What I'd like to know is if Apple employees really use those screens. I just can't imagine a programmer staying 8-10 hours a day in front of something like the 24" LCD debugging code, or an Apple business manager going to meetings with a glass MacBook Pro.

The whole point of this thread is that Apple is taking away options. Now you only have one choice and that's it.

It is the same with car manufacturers for the USA market. Most car have switched and you can only get cars in automatics. I have always driven manual transmissions and now everything is in an auto? REMOVE THE OPTIONS and it is less for us to deal with right? :) It's funny how the cars in Europe give you the option for manual or auto transmission. I am not saying automatics are bad, just give us our options.

Stop taking away our options. That's is what makes us different. Hmm...or should we all be the same. Same computers, same cars, same clothing. ALL THE SAME

Hey look at what I have, Oh wait, so does everyone else. WAKE UP PEOPLE!

OK, maybe we should stop this thread. We are not getting anywhere with this.

Fine if people like it, but give an option. So I went antiglare on my 17".

Why did they remove the option on the 15" ?!? What if I don't want to lug around a massive laptop around with me?

I'd gladly pay the extra $50.

That and a non-removable battery (i.e. use more than one battery at a time which is essential for travel) are MBP dealbreakers for me.

I'm more interested in the quality of the matte screen when compared to the glossy. I really prefer a matte, but I haven't ordered one yet because I want to know:

-Is the screen of the same quality (i.e. does it have the same, improved color gammut as the glossy)

-Is it as sturdy or close to as sturdy as the glossy given that the glass has been removed.

I think these item are more important than how the screen handles reflections, since we really know the answer to that and it boils down to preference.

Well, I guess Glossy, Glass, Glare, I see myself, I see you behind me, MacBook Pro screens are still the choice!!! Why doesn't Apple Pie offer the matted screen on 13", 15" models? I will pay $50, shietz! I'll pay $100 for a true matted 15" MBP!!!

I always read these threads with interest because it seems that those who like the glossy screen tend to slag those who don't (though I suppose it runs both ways).

The one thing I find frustrating is that those who like the glossy screens seem to think that their experiences or preferences should be considered as normative for everyone. It's like they say "I don't have a problem with it, so you shouldn't (or don't)." That attitude is incredibly annoying. I have a Macbook 2.4 and I've tried to like the glossy screen. Much of the time I do. But I regularly find myself in locations where I just can't adjust the screen or move to get rid of the reflections. Punching the screen up to full brightness doesn't get rid of the problem. For me, it really does affect usability. Absolutely no question. Does that mean everyone should like or want matte screens? Absolutely not.

But for those those who think it should be "my way or the highway", give your head a shake. All of us like Apple and OS X or we wouldn't be buying these things. But we do wish Apple would do more than they are to accommodate more users. I finally broke down a bought a matte screen cover. It helps, but it's not as good as it would be if the screen were matte in the first place. I'd always order the matte screen option in a heartbeat!

I like Apple Pie!

I agree with you.

But, Why limit the option for people. I use Macs everyday! I am a designer (run my own design business) and a design teacher. All we use is Macs. Why only cater to the trendy consumer? Hey would you like it if you wanted a certain car but you can only get it in Pink? It is too hard for Apple to offer a matt screen option on there 13" or 15" MBPs? This is one of the biggest monopoly companies out there, and I love their product but now it's all about the trends

What is funny is that all other computer companies have gone to glossy Laptops but if you want to buy a separate display, they are all non- glossy/anti-glare. Does this make sense?

I thought of purchasing the anti-glare film but why have 2 layers of flims in front of an LCD screen (glass then plastic matt film). Just remove the glass! It would cost less. They have to charge $50 on the 17" to not have the glass? How does that make any sense? I have to pay more money to have something not installed? Hopefully this trend will end soon!

I bet that Apple doesn't offer the matte option for the 15" or 13" because of how the computer screen will look (it won't have the black border or glass and therefore COMPLETELY different from the pictures on the site).

I'm sure a majority of MacBooks that are purchased as the 15" and 13" so if you have a Matte option and people get it, they might complain "This doesn't look like the MacBook Pro on the site?!".

I know it sounds dumb, but it seems plausible. I mean, why else only offer it for the 17" - obviously there's a reason why the offer it for a higher end more "Pro" product if you will.

I won't upgrade my MacBook Pro until they put a Matte option. And I'm glad that that one university is singling out Apple about their glossy notebooks.

Apple could display a warning on the online store as the customer is paying for the computer explaining the difference between matte and glossy, and showing pictures of both.

I'm not downgrading to a glossy panel. I couldn't stand the reflections on my Macbook Air. I tried to get used to it for two months, but it became more and more aggravating. So now I can't upgrade to a 15" uMBP, or get the 24" Display.

I'm pretty sure that all manufacturers can get away with using cheaper panels on the glossy/glassy displays because the reflections mask deficiencies. Now you don't have to use a high quality panel, because the glass will make it look "better" than it really is.

I'm not buying MB before it has matte screen and blu-ray.
And how long will it take before they upgrade their 30" to dp?
Hope it doesn't change to glassy-glossy then...
And why apple takes away features these times every time they bring new models?
Good thing that they corrected their mistake of taking away fw from 13", but in the future, I will be scared every time they bring new models, about what they are taking away this time.
Express card slot in 15" had hundred ways to use and you could buy sd-adapter for $30, but new sd-slot has only one way to use. Is this progress?

Oh, I guess that if they upgrade the 30 it will be glossy. Actually you can shave your beard in front of the actual displays, but with the 30" you could use it also for other parts of your body. Looks really useful.

This is a great point! That is what I was thinking. Apple has had such issues and complaints about the screens not looking clear, have yellowish on the lower part of the screen, shadows, ghost effect on the corners, etc. Now, just put a piece of glass in front of it and "poof" problem solved? I know they use different companies for their screens and they can't get consistent quality screens, so why don't they stick with one and perfected it?

Exactly! I'd wait too! They keep taking away features. Why were the earlier non-unibody MBP so great and hardly upgraded? Still one of the best designs out there. Most people I know wouldn't even think of given theirs up. It goes back to the saying, if it ain't broken, don't fix it! I do like the unibody concept, making it stronger and lighter but now we have to sacrifice with the lack of features? Hey, Apple makes the calls right? If they told us to jump, would you say how high? Is it me or have you also notice the trend of the little things being taken away in all types of products, places to visit, things to do, etc.?

Now, if we keep waiting is there going to be nothing left to a MBP?

Also, these would be great if you live with people who like to come up from behind you and scare you? I see you :p
