Same here (I have iWeb). I specifically wanted to make sure I had iWeb since I have a substantial site built for my family to see pictures and videos of my two boys (1 and 3). The way I made sure of that was to go buy at the retail store to get SL and then upgraded to Lion when I got home. Best of both worlds. Plus I made a Lion install disc (from directions I found here) when I downloaded Lion. Totally happy about my decision!

OK, I just got my very first Apple computer. I got the *newest* iMAC and it just came today. One of the very first things that I looked for was the iLife applications. I'm very disappointed that it does not come with iWeb and iDVD.

I've never needed to call Apple for anything before. Do you think that they will help get me these 2 application if I asked?

I've been aware of this situation for a few days. When I ordered my computer on Monday, the sales rep I spoke with told me that, as far as they knew, iDVD was included with the new Lion iMacs. She was very nice and even checked with her supervisor. I told her that people have been posting comments to the contrary. She told me that if I got my computer and it didn't included iDVD, call her back and she would "make it right". Presumably by sending me a free copy of the boxed iLife '11.

When I got my computer yesterday, it had Snow Leopard (and iDVD). I upgraded to Lion and iDVD seems to run fine under Lion.

I've been posting about the iDVD not being included with the new computers, and it seems like only a few people care. This could work to your benefit. If I were you, I'd call Apple Sales and tell them that you thought the complete iLife suite was included with new computers. If you strike the right balance of being nice and persistent, maybe they'll send you a free copy of iLife '11.

I upgraded my iMac to Lion a few days and I do have iDVD and iWeb installed.

Yeah, if you have Snow Leopard and you upgrade to Lion, you will still have the applications. Upgrading does not delete the applications. But if you purchase a new computer with Lion pre-installed, I gather your computer will not ship with iDVD or iWeb.

I wonder Why they did that????

My speculation is that Apple figures most people want to upload their footage to Youtube or stream it to their Apple TV. And probably iDVD was too complicated for most people.

People who still want to burn discs can buy Final Cut Pro. Note that I don't agree with this reasoning or Apple's decision.

I'm not so sure about iWeb; I never used that application.

Got my Macbook Pro yesterday with Lion. can confirm it does not come with iDVD or iWeb. As a newbie to Macs, bit gutted to say the least as I do DVD burning and have done on my Windows, but want to do it on my MAC.

Can anyone suggest a free alternative (or at least not expensive)

I'm in the same boat. I've ordered an iMac and need to make a DVD of a relative's wedding. Most people are suggesting buying iLife '11 from Amazon for under $40. I don't really like that idea. Surely there's a cheaper bare-bones program that will burn an iMovie to a DVD. I don't need any chapters or menus just burn straight to disk.

I have this, and it's free.

MrWillie, a few questions. Does this work under lion? Are you happy with it?

I don't kow if it works under Lion. I haven't upgraded yet.

I rarely ever burn anything to a DVD. (I have 7 thumb drives 2 to 32 gigs)

However, it did do what I wanted it to do. It's open source software (and free). So try it out. If it doesn't work, no harm, no foul.

New Mac Mini - NO iWeb or idvd

Hello to the rest of the frustrated world who purchased a new mac with lion preinstalled.

I recently decided to start a blog and found out about this awesome software called iWeb for the mac. After doing a search for it, (because I couldn't find it on my computer). I found this link : http://www.apple.com/ilife/iweb

I said, oooh great. All these videos, and descriptions, I was thinking I was going to be a pro blogger/pro website builder in no time.

Well... then the fun police came around and I found out through the various sites and forums that the iWeb and idvd programs are not part of the pre-installed ilife 11.

#ugh, #fail
Enough Said.

P.S. - If anyone knows a way to get iweb/idvd installed or get apple to let me download or get a retail box, please post !

Call Apple sales and (nicely) complain. Say you were led to believe that new macs include the complete iLife suite. I've already heard from one person got Apple to send him a free boxed copy of iLife '11 (which includes iWeb and iDVD).

edit: even if you do get a copy of iWeb, you probably don't want to create a new blog with a discontinued application that uses a proprietary format.

I'm a bit confused, does this only affect brand new iMacs?

Reason I ask is because I am in the process of clean booting Lion onto my older iMac. I've already got it on an thumbdrive and was going to wipe my hard drive clean and start a clean install.

If I do this, will I get iDVD and iWeb back? Or will it be gone forever?

I currently am running Lion just fine (Upgrade from Snow Leopard) but I want to start fresh with no remnants of Snow Leopard. I currently have iDVD and iWed installed.

Thanks

If you have your application DVD that came with your iMac then you should be all set to go.

even if you get iWeb, most iWeb features will disappear do to the fact that it works with MobileMe service so unless apple makes a update for that in the future I don't see any reason to stick with iWeb

I could be wrong about this, but if you copy the iDVD and iWeb applications onto an external drive, then do a clean install of Lion, then copy back the iDVD and iWeb applications, they may work fine. But if the original iDVD and iWeb installers put some necessary files someplace other than in the application package, then I guess it would not work.

The other iLife applications (iPhoto, etc) you should be able to reinstall by downloading from the app store. But you may want to confirm that works for all computers running Lion and not just computers that ship with Lion pre-installed.

edit: reading this makes me think you can only download iLife applications if your computer shipped with Lion installed.

This is correct. For all people wondering about the faith of iDVD and iWeb, I do not know where you guys have been, but these two apps are being DISCONTINUED.

As of now, they have been and won't be updated anymore. As the OP has said, if you backup the apps from iLife preinstalled/installed on Snow Leopard Macs, you may use them in Lion (people in this thread have stated that it runs fine, so I'll give the benefit of the doubt).

I called.

I called apple and was very nice, after a couple bounces from apple care to app store support, the rep suggest i purchase rapid weaver which is $79.99 from the app store !

so he didn't offer to get me ilife retail box.

to the users who have been mentioning how its discontinued and all, if I was to get iWeb, is it just going to stop working one day??
I mean, if I have it, whats the problem with using it? Im confused :-/

Well, seeing as it is discontinued, support for iWeb is questionable on future versions of Mac OS X. It's either a hit or miss... One day, it may most likely be a miss...

No, it shouldn't stop working. It will just no longer be supported or updated. And I don't believe there is any way to easily export your data to someplace else, like Squarespace. But I'm not too knowledgeable about this subject, I could be wrong.
