If it's helpful to anyone, i got a new imac with lion preinstalled and no iweb or idvd. I was able to install iWeb and iDVD from my old iLife 09 optical disc. It's still listed for sale on amazon. Good luck.

Thank You !

You all have been extremely helpful, thank you very much for the quick support !

I ended up getting a hold of a copy of the iLife Retail Box !

Now a slightly off-topic question... What would be a better web publishing PROGRAM to use, Ive seen some ones that are done online, but I like iWeb because it lets you pick and choose media content right from the your computer. (So actually I DO have iWeb now, but Ill explain why I might be looking for something else).

So the whole reason I started this whole iWeb search is because I want to start a food review blog. I love going out to eat and know all the best places to eat, and thought this might be fun, and who knows, I might one day get paid to dine out !

I have created my website called : www.thenewenglandfoodreview.com , however, in iWeb when you MUST type in a 'site name', which when you launch the website it redirects it to a 'main page' which is your site name.
As an example, which Im sure everyone is familiar with goes like this in case of my site :
www.thenewenglandfoodreview.com/nefr/welcome.html

I know there are different opinions for this, but its frustrating. If you goto www.macrumors.com, you aren't redirected to some other main link.

I might be asking this in the wrong area or forum or site, but what would someone recommend as the best website development program?

In short thats the question. ;)

Personally, I preferred editing HTML files in Design view than using iWeb. I think iWeb has an easier UI for making great little websites.

As for the added extras such as "index.html", you should keep it, mainly because it makes links easier to go to (even with the added text in the link)... I have used URL shortening services and feel like you can't link to specific pages other than the Homepage. (The URL would simply be static). However, I think Web devs should answer this one with better experience.

This was just my opinion.. :)

Can't you just burn DVDs using Disk Utility?

I guess the program to burn iMovie movies to DVD is easier with iDVD. Personally, I would simply use Disk Utility.

I don't think it's possible to use Disk Utility to burn an iMovie project onto a disc that will play on a standard DVD player. I don't think it's possible to export the correct file structure out of iMovie.

And it's definitely not possible to do so and create a DVD menu.

Exactly. iDVD is a lot more than a just a disc burning program.

While some people have suggested Roxio as an alternative, I find that the video produced by iMovie looks better. In addition, the DVD menus produced by iDVD can be customized much more easily and look more professional.

I know Steve thinks everybody ought to be using electronic files, but a lot of my friends don't have computers linked to their TV sets. It's a lot easier to give them a DVD than to explain how to play particular file formats.

I just tried on my MBP, no iDVD so I'm downloading it from ........ a certain place.

Since it should have come with what I already paid for.

same here..

i joined this site just to confirm as other people just did, I bought my 3rd macbook pro just a week ago (runs lion) and there is no idvd or iweb.

it really has some drawbacks... when I'm using imovie and am finished with a project, there's an option to share with idvd. So you click on it, and then there's the progress bar as if you were burning a disc. When the progress bar is finally finished, surprise! nothing happens, because idvd is not installed in the computer.
mac doesnt even offer it in the app store, so why does imovie have it as an option?

another thing about imovie, it doesnt let you import avis anymore, you gotta convert them first....

wth apple :/

No IDVD

First MAC ever. Bought the iMAC. I didn't even know what the iDVD was until i started messing around with iMovie. I wanted to give it as a gift freakin iDVD to burn the project. This is BS! I called support before i read the forum and the guy told my to use a 3rd party source. He said "toast" but of course i can't find it anywhere. What now?

Well, I just got a new iMac running Lion OOB, and when I did the Setup Assistant from a SL backup, I got iDVD back, BUT I would have been livid if my brand new shiny iMac was incapable of burning a movie DVD OOB and I didn't have the program to copy over.

I remember when Windows computers were able to natively burn CD"s but you had to buy extra software to burn DVD's ... what a pain in the rear that was. But Macs bragged about how you could make a movie and burn it all from iLife just with the software that came for "free". Now we've come full circle and it is very un-customer friendly for them to remove such an integral part of the experience. Shame on Apple.

iDVD with Lion

I have been converting our household over to macs recently. We now have:
MacBook Air Upgraded from SL to Lion -> Has iDvd.
Mac Mini Bought with Lion installed -> No iDvd.
iMac Bought with Lion installed -> No iDvd.

So I was a little frustrated that the only Mac with a Dvd writer had no software and the one with the software had no Dvd writer Grrrr!

Copied the iDVD application to the iMac using Airdrop.
Also from the directory Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes copied both sub directories to the iMac (iDVD 6 and iDVD 7).
Put the app into applications and copied the themes to the identical directory as they were on the MacBook Air.

It all works a treat, on it's own or with iMovie.

Now I may get told I have been a naughty boy here but......
iDVD was supplied on a computer that couldn't use it.
It was not supplied on a computer that could use it.
I have deleted it from the MacBook Air, for all the good it was on there.

Anyway if you have access to a SL mac or SL upgraded to Lion, this may be an option for you.

Let's see if I get shouted at !

Cheers,

Terry

No idvd

After hours of trying to find iDVD on my brand new iMac I learned it's not there. Customer support and the folks at the local Apple Store were apologetic but not helpful. They suggested I buy Final Cut Pro, or Toast. Finally found iLife at Best Buy for $80 and loaded iDVD ! I know DVD's may be on the way out, but not quite yet. I feel ripped off.

Bought MacBook Pro with Lion-- no iDVD

Trying to find a solution for burning slideshow/movies to DVD -- my new MacBook Pro to my surprise has no iDVD on it though its supposed to have the iLife 11 suite. New computers come with no discs. Talked to apple support said should be there would have to go back to best buy where I bought to find out why. Sure Best Buy received these preloaded. See here there is a lot of confusion about this.

Could anyone recommend a 3rd party DVD burning app that works with Mac besides Toast -- not very good reviews and seems a lot of problems with it.

Im new to Mac, can't believe I paid this much money for a laptop that I can't burn DVD's of my movies and slideshows. Help!

Well that is kind of a bummer. Though I have iLife 11 family pack anyway. So will just install from there. I use iWeb to edit my sounds Scouts webpage along with my band webpage. Would stink losing that.

Since Apple has EOL'd iWeb, you should consider that it may eventually lose compatibility with a future OS version. It probably makes sense to start your migration plan now, at your pace rather than be forced later.

I just discovered this sad fact today! What's up Apple? Even the cheapest PCs come with a basic version of Roxio. How does Apple expect to keep their prices higher than PCs when they start taking away the Macs' best feature - it's software and how they integrate with each other.

I can't believe I am saying this, but it is now true - PCs now have more multimedia capabilities than Macs. :(

Apple has never hung on to tech it considers (often correctly) on the way out. Optical media is dying, just ask your local Blockbuster staff ;)

If you're sharing a home movie you could compress it to H.264 I'd use Handbrakes ATV2 setting as this will play on pretty much any media player including all iOS devices, XBOX 360, PS3, many Blu-Ray players and any PC worth its salt. You can still burn it to a DVD disk to mail off to your family and friends.

H.264 is an industry standard and efficient enough you could email or Dropbox smaller videos or get a hosting service (from free to about the price of a box of blank media) to share your memories.

Heck you could even upload em to YouTube for the world to see.

As for iWeb I don't miss it. It created bloaty websites and had templates that seemed to be designed for teenage girls. Both Sandvox and Rapidweaver are much nicer and just as easy to use IMHO.

Sorry for resurrecting a slightly aged thread, but I've just got a new 27' iMac at work, mainly for graphic design stuff. We also occasionally do corporate training video stuff. Latest iMovie is excellent for this.... you then click on SHARE and "BURN WITH iDVD"..... bear in mind this is all pre installed on LION. iMovie then asks you "WHERE IS iDVD?!!!!!!!!!!!"

"YOU TELL ME!" I shouted back at it!

I know it's all very cool to assume DVD is dead, but for simple corporate stuff it will be around for years!

I think it's arrogant of Apple in the extreme to just bin iDVD - and b***y frustrating that iMovie still refers to it!

PS,date of purchase JUNE 2012.

You are going to need to find the disc based version of iLife that still includes iDVD. You can find it on Amazon.
