thanks guys for the responses... yea i was talking to my coworker this morning and his point is that iphones is a fad. LOL

Has your co-worker been in a long coma? Next time you see him, ask him his definition of "fad". Then explain the iPhones been around for years, gaining popularity all the time!

I'm sure there are people that would try to argue that it was or is a fad, but numbers don't lie. The iPhone and iPad both almost single handedly changed the consumer electronics industry. To say they are a fad would be completely ignorant.

Blackberry is dead. A BIG reason they are are dying is no developer support...if you haven't noticed, popular is GOOOOOD for a thriving ecosystem

Z30 is too big...get a Z10...exactly the same size as an iPhone. Too bad their old OS outsells their new one. :D

Its a two horse race now and they are not named Microsoft or Blackberry.

Z10 is like getting a 4s. Popular can equate to mediocrity. Blackberry had a lot firsts that were since copied. Yes apple is winner, unfortunately it's not better. Strictly on merit bb10 wins the race.

If the sample size for "short lived" is 500 years, then yes, absolutely, the iPhone would definitely be a fad.

You're arguing an operating system. I said the ECOSYSTEM was better. Are you actually arguing that BB10 has a better ecosystem

That's like saying the Camry is a better car than the Accord because consumers have voted with their wallets. Anyway this is one of those things I can see will not be eye to eye.

Its more like Toyota vs. Saab but whatever. ;)

Assuming that I agreed with anything that you said, which to be honest I don't. What has this to do with whether the iPhone is a fad?

I'll go a step further smart phones are a part of our culture.

----------

Yes blackberry is better. Better has nothing to do with numbers of apps.

I'm not sure better but they do have a impressive hardware, but without developers...

developers is what makes a Mobile ecosystem better. The reason why Apple is so strong is that they're very involved in the software and hardware part and they worked directly with developers.

This got off topic slightly. You can't say iphone is a fad or not, without looking at the landscape in total.

Certainly there is more variety in apps. TBH if I could get Netflix and Sirius and hbo go and a few others on BB10, I probably would have put up with the size of the phone. Except as it stands now since Nov. I haven't used any of those apps, except Sirius.

In a way it does have the social "enthusiasm" as fads do. Not short lived though, and probably won't be.

We'll have to define 'fad' first. Because honestly, I reserve fad for clothing. Will it stop being popular, yes eventually. The iPod was a 'fad', but then again almost all phones have MP3 players in it.

I don't like using words like 'fad' or 'gimmicks' because it destroys the essence of things.

Interesting analogy. Toyota owns Fuji Heavy Industries. Fuji own Subaru. Saabs are now built on a Subaru platform.

FYI, the only Saab based on a Subaru platform was the 9-2x, which was only available as a 2005-2006 model. I am pretty sure Saab is mostly owned by a Chinese company now.
