I guess. It's set for 4 hours, so I very rarely have to use it.

Right. That's as close as he can get to what he wants to do. Disable TouchID for unlocking, add a passcode, but set the "Require passcode to unlock" timeout as high as it will go.

He'd likely have to unlock it in the morning, and maybe once throughout the day if he uses his phone like I do.

That's unfortunate. On the 5s, I had some problems with touchID at the beginning, but with the 6 i'm pretty sure I have a 100% success rate. just my anecdotal evidence.

My 5S worked pretty good but I have tried two of the iPhone 6 units and 1 or 2 times out of five do not work. I even entered the same thumb for three of the enrolled fingers. Just not working to the point I will use.

No touchid is an EXTRA step and a delay. I hate delays

Its actually not. But you seem adamant about ignoring any advice given so....

Tough luck.

----------

Because at times it DOES NOT WORK!

I have a roughly 99% success rate. The times when it doesn't work are because I'm rushing and only have half my finger on the button. Even then it works sometimes.

It's keeping your finger on the home button and extra millisecond longer than you would if you were simply waking the display. So simple and efficient, I don't know what to tell you.

Just turned on touch id and am constantly greeted with try again

No

It was a huge dissapointment for me also as I am not locking down my phone so I can use Apple Pay either. Not worth the trouble for me.

Apple could have made it work for people like you if they would have allowed you to lock down the app rather than the whole phone.

Well, maybe next year Apple will make it so you can just "think" about paying for something and it will be so. /s

Are you sure that's an iPhone? Always works flawlessly for me. Or maybe your fingerprints are worn off. A guy at work says he doesn't have fingerprints because they wear off form [...] - I forgot what he told me about why. He said that's why his Samsung fingerprint reader doesn't work.

I'm still using the 5 and I haven't played around with setting up Touch ID on any family members 5s. But when turning on and off the passcode lock, do you need to re-enroll your prints? Yes it would be a nuisance, but couldn't one just enable passcode when going out shopping and turn back off when home?

I guess that's what the expression, "didn't have to lift a finger" really means.

Welp I already had to turn it off. I quickly realized how ****ing annoying it is to have to enter passcode or touchid every time I want to reply to a text off my lock screen or do something with a photo I just took off the lockscreen. So lame.

You can quick reply to a text on the lock screen by swiping down on it, all without entering a passcode.

Why would you not have a lock on your phone? It takes 2 seconds to type in a passcode and 1 second for Touch ID to unlock lol

It's Tip #1 (Quickly respond to a notification) in the Tips app. When you get the text banner on the lock screen, pull it down so you can reply right there on the lock screen.

That's for things with a text banner though

because I don't want anything to delay me getting into my phone, I want it as quick as possible. I don't buy a fast phone to be delayed 2 seconds to do this or 2 seconds to do that.
And there is absolutely no reason for me to lock my phone

Well, it sounds like you've made up your mind already. And if TouchID is not working well for you, I can sort of understand not wanting to use it. But for me using it it is faster than sliding to unlock, as many people have said. And since I always had a lock on my phone anyway, using TouchID is many times faster than I was had been doing. I assume you've tried deleting and re-entering your prints?

As for the lock, you may think you don't need one, but you may change your tune if you lose your phone.

I've definitely made up my mind, touchid sucks for lock screen. I just want to use it for Apple pay and I can't.

It doesn't seem SO bad for unlocking but having to do it every time I want to do something off the lock screen sucks.

If I lose my phone, an honest person can open it and call someone in my phone book. If a dishonest person finds it, then it won't matter anyway.

If a dishonest person finds it, they can use your info to steal your identity. You can always do something like put a contact number on your wallpaper for someone to call if they find the phone -- no unlocking required.

One thing that Apple did not document on the Touch ID is you can train it inside the Touch ID settings:

Once you enrolled a fingerprint in Touch ID, when you put that fingerprint on when you are in the Touch ID screen, that fingerprint will flash red to indicate the iPhone recognizes that fingerprint.

What Apple did not tell you is that when you do that, you are also training the phone to recognize that fingerprint (just like the steps you walk through when you enroll a new fingerprint).

So just spend some time in that screen - press your finger in the same position a few times, move it a little bit and press it again a few times. Do it for a couple minutes and you should see a pretty big improvement on the Touch ID accuracy.

Is it impossible for me to use Apple Pay?

As for it not reading your finger keep redoing it till it works and do more than one finger. I did five myself.

If A dishonest person finds the phone they can use all the contacts in your phone to try and steal money from other people you know. Sound far-fetched? Little story.

I have a neighbor who got a phone call from her grandson that lives on the other side of the country. He told her he was in desperate need to get out of jail as he had just gotten arrested. he didn't want to let his mom know he was in trouble and asked her if she could wire him the money. She did.

Of course we all realize this is wrong, but this person got all of this person's information from their phone which they had lost recently. He new enough of that to fake being the person and steal from an elderly person who has a big heart. While you personally may not fall for this do you not have anyone in your phone who might be older to get a little confused or very concerned and fall for the same kind of scheme?

Not to mention why do you think that the phone doesn't need to be locked even though it carries other people's personal information? Did they all say it's ok for their info to be easily had if you lose your phone? I will never let the info in my phone be vulnerable since I carry so many other people's info in it.

Why can't you set it to require the passcode once every 4 hours? It won't be every single time.

This is all stuff I'm completely unconcerned with.

I'll try it, but I know me.. I get annoyed quickly. But I like the idea of a stranger being able to access my contacts

For those saying their touch id doesn't work so well, are y'all positive that it's your fingers and not the phone? When I got my 6, my touch id was really finicky, and I even posted a few times complaining about having to use touch ID with apple pay. I went to an apple store a few days ago and was able to set up and use touch id with 100% success rate. It just turned out to be my phone that was the problem so I made an appointment with a genius and got my phone swapped out. The genius said he had the same issue with his phone. Maybe give it a try.

----------

Do your contacts like the idea of a stranger getting access to their info?

There used to be a thing called a "phone book". Pretty much everyone was in it. They aren't as common anymore, but most people didn't complain about them.

I only have the option for require immediately?

I couldn't care less. "Oh no, a stranger has my number I'm sooo mad at iphone7ate9"

Why do I get the feeling that you have never used Touch ID?

Touch ID is a delay when you compare it to no passcode and swiping on a notification to go straight to the app. I used to do that a lot when I didn't use a passcode - now that I am using TouchID/passcode, that gesture is pretty much meaningless as a time saver.
