After canvassing opinion in my office (which is significantly above average income) and with friends I think I'd be soundly berated for spending 900 quid on a phone, not to mention my own cognitive dissonance. So the 7S/8 it is. What's worth getting excited over?

iPhone 8 MR forumistas we are here...

I'm like 90% in the wait and see, or rather do not buy camp. I think here at MR, I'm in the minority, in the RL, I'm part of the majority - at least with my circle of friends, acquaintances and coworkers.

Tbh, I'm having a problem spending 1,000 for a phone that may last 2 years. My iPhone SE which I love has a home button going south, so I can pay to have it repaired, wait for the next SE, or just buy this, but the price tag may be too much for me to bear

Well, if I end up buying at all, it's most likely going to be either the 8 or 8+. But before I buy anything, I'll wait until Apple Pay makes it here and I can see if my bank is supported.

Question is what will they do in 2018?

If OLED doesnt come down in price the 8 will have to stick around longer.

I respect your opinion but "may" last two years is ridiculous. The A11 is rumored to be a 6 core CPU + who knows what the GPU looks like. The 2500k desktop CPU is still relevant today and we are entering into a 6 core CPU on a mobile device. That is crazy.

QLED lol! /s

I forsee this "X" taking over the lower end screen range with the 6.4 taking over the larger range.

If it's under 900 quid for the 128GB then I might be in, but if the 128GB 8 is £650-700 compared to a £949 64GB X then there is absolutely no way. I can't handle paying more for a phone than my mrs' first Macbook cost in 2008.

Only this, what I do with my money is no ones business.

I respect their opinion, these are people who usually spend on their tech when required, but like me are struggling with the idea of £950 for a smartphone. Especially the ones with their shiny new S8s.

I'm waiting for these new phones to be released so the iPhone 7+ gets reduced and then I'll get that! These phones all do the same thing, facial recognition isn't a deal breaker for me. A nearly bezel-less display isn't a big deal for me. It really doesn't matter that much. Sure, it looks nice but not £900+ nice.

I think phones have just become crazy - if people keep paying these prices for them then they'll never get reduced. The price will always be going up and up. People need to put their foot down and say no. The problem they'll have in the future is that people are just not gonna want to upgrade because they'll be spending £2k on a phone, they'll want it to last more than 2 years. And realistically, how far will technology take smartphones?

Just my interpretation, but I believe Maflynn is saying the iPhone will last two years based on when they decide to upgrade again regarding spending a $1000, not in terms of lasting two years in iOS support. I think they are saying that's a lot of money to spend if they upgrade their device within or under two years.

I'll get the iPhone X or whatever it's called. If you're going to buy a new phone, you might as well spend good money on the real thing instead of a gimped cheaper version. It's like those people who buy a Porsche Boxster or Cayman. They've purposely spent money of something purposely designed to not be very good so it doesn't tread on the toes of the most expensive model.

Happy to wait and see, and if the price point is not to my liking, more than happy to jump ship to Galaxy S8+, whose prices have gone down considerably, or the Pixel 2, assuming that wont break the bank.

Plenty of good features in Android, although it may not have the snazziness and the 'starbucks - hey look at my phone' factor.

Why is is ridiculous? Most people here seem to trade theirs in annually, every phone carrier offers a method to trade up to the next version. I think people may be short sighted not to think that when next year rolls around many people won't trade up.

I hear you and it really comes down to what you are wiling to pay for the hardware upgrade each year or every two years.

When are the group collective ever going to say "no" to an Apple product? Not any time soon. It's crazy to think people will pay "x" amount of dollars for something but people do anyway. Are they idiots? Possibly but that isn't my judgement call.

Why don't you think people won't trade up? If they are on the 12 month / 50% trade in plan they will get the new iPhone whatever it may be.

That's my point most people will be trading up, and given the high cost, I think its priced too high imo. I don't think its a good value of money.

As for phones physically lasting > 2 years, I've not seen one smartphone from myself, my wife, family or friends that have a battery fading during or after 3 years of usage. Again I don't think its something I want to pay every other year, but that's just me.

I bought the new MacBook Pro last November and I have more and more problems with the butterfly keyboard, battery (94% capacity left), Touch ID not working anymore and touchBar crashing from time to time.

So no first gen devices for me anymore!

The iPhone X is for people who can afford it and don’t have to worry about money.

Except a great camera, what features of the iPhone X could improve how we do things? OLED? Larger Display? FaceID?

Cayman was never really worse, just the margin on the 911 which is double or so.

It's all subjective. You are never going to "gain" money when you are on a yearly upgrade program. That's the hit you take to upgrade each year. And that's cool, you don't want to pay every year. More power to you. Some of us love being on the forefront of new tech, no matter the cost.

If you want the best, you have to pay for it. If you are happy to pay a bit less for a compromised experience, I'm happy for you.

It is iPhone X for me. I already know it'll be worth whatever price Apple chooses to charge for it.

They're not, but I'm saying it needs to happen - that's the only way the prices are gonna go back to what is semi-acceptable. Things aren't going to stay the same forever, and like with all good things - there has to be an end for Apple. I love Apple as much as the next person, but their arrogance is going to take them over the edge. Maybe not right now, but eventually it will.

The problem is other companies are following suit and charging ridiculous prices for their phones (cough SAMSUNG) so I fear there's no going back now. But people will definitely start getting fed up, and whilst they might not leave the Apple ecosystem, they will definitely stop upgrading every year.

I personally own a Galaxy S7 because I was fed up of upgrading to what was essentially the same phone with minor changes - I wanted something different. Now I'm planning my return to Apple but I'll have to be a year or so behind because I have better things to spend that much money on!
