My ThinkPad R40 does look pretty fugly sitting next to my MacBook, and while design is important and I love Apple's sexy products the R40 has worked like a charm running Linux since I bought it used on eBay back in April.

It looks tough like a Hummer looks eco-conscious.

This doesn't look tough to you?

i love the look of a thinkpad b/c its doesnt pay any attention to color really. its a thin laptop line, made to be a work horse and the 90s blue keys are just perfect. its like a novelty, in a diff way than my purty pb tho

I think the DULL XPS1710 is probably the ugliest laptop in the world. That ThinkPad comes close though!
the dell xps m1710 has too much buttons to make it look all pro like unlike the MBP(MacBook Pro)it totally looks pro like and its super sleek and sexy
need of an update from the early '90's.

yeah the thinkpad looks like the ugly laptops from the 90s MacBook & MacBook Pro=Sleek and Sexy

I like them.

They work well and they do the job. I owned a TP 365XD, which I think was a Pentium 90, and it was my first ever laptop. Indestructible. I loved the beast.

When it got stolen, a couple of years later, I got another one, a PII 200, I think it was a TP 740. It didn't work so well, but that wasn't its fault as I got it second hand, very cheap, with a dead battery and dodgy power connector.

I like the pointing stick, much easier to type with than a touchpad, but some people don't get on with it. I've noticed that some people try to use it like a trackball, stroking the nub. No. Push on it. It registers your push, direction, and force, all without moving.

If I had to buy a windows laptop, I'd almost definitely get a TP. Many of the ugly stickers can be removed, and overall it works well.

I am gonna have to dig this thread up....

The Thinkpad design is not akin to those of the nineties. If you were to track down a 390E from 1998, and a T61 from 2008, they would both instantly be recognizable as Thinkpads. However, the T61 has been ever so slightly tweaked in tons of ways, so that it stays up to date.

They're supposed to be timeless, and I think it worked well.

ThinkPads are far from the most unattractive PC laptops out there. Then again, the competition is pretty pathetic for the most part. I guess the best I can say about the ThinkPads is that they are generally inoffensive looking to my eyes.

I wouldn't say their build quality is dramatically different from a MacBook Pro: in some ways better and in some ways worse.

:eek:Oh...oh my...please don't ever post a link like that again...that was one hideous laptop...blinded me right down to my third eye! I'll take a ThinkPad over that anyday...come to think of it...i used to love my ThinkPad...not very pretty, but best "Linux Laptop" I've ever used (all the hardware was compatible).:)

What TP model did you have???

My T41 didn't do great with Linux....

I've had two IBM thinkpads over the years and for the most part they have been really solid. The first one, an IBM 570, is amazingly slim for its age...and even though it is now 9 years old it runs windows XP decently. I accidentally dropped a 15 pound book on it a few years back, and it still works fine!

The second, an IBM T22 was also build like a tank. I did have some motherboard issues with it...but overall I think I'd choose IBMs over all the other PC brands....

Function over form. Apple could learn a thing or 2 from from the old think pad instead of doing form over function.
