iPhone X Is it me, or does Face ID suck? [MERGED]

Never thought I say it but I do like FaceID rarely fails unless I hold the phone at a funny angle etc.
Only bit I rather have TouchID is using Apple Pay it was by far more convenient
 
To answer your question.......it’s you.

Love Face ID, has always worked great for me. Much preferred it over pushing the button. When I use my iPad Air 2 it pisses me off that have to go back to Touch ID. Using Max and iPad Pro with Face ID is so fluid.

I’m near sighted so when I don’t have glasses or contacts on I have to hold the phone close to my face to read it. So Face ID fails everytime I do that and I would have to move the phone back and attempt to unlock again

That's unfortunate, but it should just unlock automatically as you pick up the phone and by the time you've picked it up you can just swipe up and move it close to your face... yeah?

Your use case is something that I think Apple can't control and you slip through the cracks. I do hope for an under the screen fingerprint sensor in the future though so we can have a choice between the two.
 
I moved to iPhone Xs at launch, prior to I was using an iPhone 7. I was reluctant to upgrade last year to the X because of Face ID.

I have to say it has operated flawlessly. It opens my phone in total darkness without any problem. In addition it just seems to work in every environment. I wanted to not like the feature, but it has excelled in every way.

I much prefer Face ID and I rarely have it fail to unlock my phone, so I'd say it works great for me, so maybe it is you OP.

I also have no issues with Apple Pay I mean it's a double wake button press and look at the screen, not sure how much easier it could be given the convenience of Face ID overall.
 
Just buy what you like best. Rest assured if you have an iPhone with TouchID or FaceID, you’ll be able to unlock your phone and confirm passwords in a fraction of a second. Both alternative technologies with a similar aim. Couldn’t argue which is better as it’s insignificant really.

Touch ID was very sufficient and highly accurate. It’s not a touch ID isn’t relevant anymore, because it is, it’s just Face ID is Apple‘s way of offering something they believe is more secure and opening up the hardware to new potential by deleting the home button/ bezel area.
 
After using the XR for two weeks now, I much prefer Touch ID. It just works better for me. Probably will use the XR for a few months but eventually I will go back to a device with a fingerprint reader. Don't really want an older device so I'll see what Android devices are doing next year.

I've had the XR for almost 2 weeks and I think I can say that I too prefer Face ID over Touch ID. My previous phone was a 6. Touch ID on that phone honestly worked properly about 50% of the time, give or take. More often than not I'd just end up keying in my passcode. By contrast with the XR Face ID has worked so far well over 95% of the time. Of course, overall the XR is a great upgrade from the 6.

I’m a big fan of faceID. Due to poor quality skin on my hands, fingerprint sensors have never been that reliable for me. I had the Samsung note 8 as my last phone and I came to use its face unlock a lot but it was slow and not consistent in all environments. The iris sensor made my eyes feel funny and again was not consistent. FaceID is pretty much flawless. I would say in 4 weeks with the phone I have only had to enter my pin twice due to a faceID fail. On a few more occasions it has missed me first time, but has picked me up on a rescan.

Hearing on the original X that faceID could struggle in bright sunlight, I was unsure how it would work when on holiday in Mexico recently. But I was really impressed when I had a baseball cap on, big Oakley sunglasses and there was not a cloud in the sky and faceID worked bang on every time.

It was fine on the X and now the XS for me - no issues. Seems to work every time, day or night.

Just guessing, but either you had issues with your skin having poor contact with the touch ID sensor or your touch ID sensor/calibration was faulty, 50% is a horrible ratio of accuracy when unlocking your phone. Touch ID generally had a very high success rate of unlocking.
 
I love my XR but I (mostly) hate FaceID.
(1) It doesn't work in portrait orientation. A few of my apps are designed to be used in portrait mode and this can be inconvenient.
(2) Some apps, particularly finance ones worked fine with Touch ID but I have now had to go back to entering a password.
(3) You can’t reach across and tap your phone to activate it if it is sitting on a table.
(4) Double-clicking an inconveniently placed side button for Apple Pay. Enough said.
It’s nit all doom and gloom though. FaceID is fast and it seems to be very reliable - perhaps even as reliable as TouchID. I also like the seamless feel of many apps and websites that automatically log me in.

I very much miss unlocking my phone when i pull it out of my pocket. Having to take a second to look down and unlock is still kind of annoying.

It's definitely not just the OP. I don't prefer Face ID at all. In fact, I would say I borderline hate it. About half the time I've tried to use Apple Pay with a double press of the side button, I'm met with having to use my passcode instead. It's certainly not the same level of convenience that Touch ID was/is.

1. Do you mean landscape? Because it only works in portrait on the phones.
2. Yeah, I don't understand why apps have to separately support Face ID if they already support Touch ID. Too many apps aren't bothering to implement it, even with more phones having it now.
3. Hate this. Anything slightly at angle fails. Very inconvenient.
4. Hate this, too. This somehow just doesn't work as seamlessly as it did with double tapping the home button. I'm not sure why.

I am finding the opposite. After using XS Max and gen 3 iPad Pro 12.9.

When I use my iPad Air 2 I get annoyed. I find myself momentarily thinking, why isn’t this thing unlocking? Then I recall this device has home button with Touch ID.

You could try turning attention feature off. See if that makes unlocking more fluid for you.

I just picked up a new iPhone X on a Black Friday deal. I don't hate Face ID, but I like Touch ID better. I'm probably going to try and go back to Touch ID in my next phone. Hopefully it'll be still around.

One thing I find super annoying is how it forces your phone to lock immediately everytime.

Yes, Face ID sucks as far as I'm concerned, and I've used a few different devices with it now, including my XS Max. I'm sure it's more secure but the experience is inferior. Having to look at it, waiting for longer than Touch took to unlock. It's a great concept, but it still feels in beta.

In my experience, Face ID is more reliable, convenient and faster than Touch ID. So, if it's in beta, is Touch ID in alpha? :)

Sure it will - it will be called "fingerprint scanner on an Android phone" :)

On Apple devices? It's being phased out. Maybe it sticks on Macs for longer.

I second your opinions, FaceID has been more reliable and more effortless than TouchID. I don't have to hold the phone awkwardly when unlocking with FaceID and its fast and accurate 95-98% of the time.

I think on the MacBook Pro lineup TouchID will be phased out as when they introduce the next gen design, and they can incorporate FaceID hardware into the screen.
