No, they effed up.

They should've explicitly stated that in order to join the new upgrade program, one will have to reserve for in-store pickup. If not qualified, one will still be given an option to buy outright. Also, it's still unknown whether prepaid customers are qualified. Also, the Apple Store app didn't let you reserve, nor does it let you use more than 1 credit card to pay.

Had I known all of the above, I would've reserved instead of buying online.

It was smoother than ever for me as I was able to purchase two new iPhones using the Apple Store App and was back in bed in less than 15 minutes!

I see far fewer complaints this year on this site!
other than 6 mins late from launch.. it went super smooth. another small criticism was that they didn't notify people that they were cancelling the subsidy for ATT and its no longer available on the preorder. However this didn't effect me because I'm a good consumer and I do my research before launch. all in all, smooth launch, YEEEEE.

PS: we're not out of the woods yet.. let's see how they do on the deliveries. Lawd knows what happened with me and the Apple Watch. BWUAHAHA.

My understanding is reserving the upgrade program is different from pick up in store option. I was able to reserve for upgrade program and it's more like a genius bar reservation. On the other hand, if you chose pick up in store, you'll have an actual order in your account.

6 minutes. Did you do it on the website? I did it in the app, was maybe 30s late, got my confirmation email at :03

I needed to use the website because a payment method I use that that app can't handle. In 2013 when I scored my 5s, it went off without a hitch.

This year it took eons to get into the site and now my delivery is delayed two weeks.

Needless to say, I disagree with your assessment wholeheartedly.

Since the iPhone 6, the Apple Store App is the best way to order direct from the Apple Store. The website is decidedly inferior in terms of uptime.

What payment method are you using that doesn't work with the App...?

Also about a six minute delay for me, got confirmation at :06. Must better than last year though.

I preordered through the App, the website didn't go live for me until 12:40! Glad I didn't stick around to wait...
Website went live minutes after :01 actually, the further delay is cause by the cache of the browser I suppose. Using different browsers, clear cache and private mode would do the trick.

I reserved two phones through the app....but it was NOT intuitive. You had to pick purchase method and then scroll back up to check stores for availability.

Very smooth! I only wish they uploaded the specs earlier so people didn't have to cancel their Verizon/T-Mobile orders in favor of AT&T.

Oh I definitely tried that. Oh well, I don't care when the website appeared for me. As long as it worked for the poor folks that relied on it to preorder.

I'm happy I didn't have to get up at 3am edt this time! Signed up for the iPhone UP at 9am and got a 9/25 1pm reservation. Hopefully the pickup process will be just as painless. ;)

The ordering process was the easiest for me ever. By 12:10am, my order was done and 5 minutes later got the email. But nobody knowing the full details about the trade in program was ridiculous.

What payment method are you using that doesn't work with the App...?

In Canada, we have access to an "Apple Financial" account. They assign you a # that looks like a credit card #. You enter it on the site and it automatically gets billed to your account. I can also pay down the account using online banking, so it works just like any credit card.

You cannot use the Apple Financial # as a payment method in the app (or in store).

Apple Financial accounts get you 3 months of interest free financing on purchases over $750. This isn't some third party payment method, but an application you actually apply for right on the Apple.ca website.

Needless to say, it's a program I take advantage of often (I buy all my Apple product this way including my 5s two years ago), The fact it won't work with the app is very weak and cost me a delayed delivery on the phone I wanted most (Black 6s Plus, 128 GB, slated for delivery Oct 7-14).

My credit limit did allow me to score a second phone (White/Silver 6s Plus, 128 GB, slated for delivery Sep 25). That model was available for launch day delivery for several hours on Saturday morning. The black model was gone in about 1/2 hour.

I don't like white phones so I'm most likely going to use it until the black one arrives and either return it to Apple or sell it privately. In other words, the weakness in the app has me taking a white/silver phone out of someone's hands that wanted one on the 25th. I'm not losing sleep over that scenario, but it's far from ideal for me. Good thing it's so easy to return stuff with Apple.

All I wanted was one phone and one phone only on the 25th. Would have had it easily using the app had it.

First world problems, I know. ;)

Yes, we didn't have the preorder drama of last year. However, I ordered through at&t for the first time as you can no longer get the subsidized prices through Apple, at least when it comes to preordering.
