Later today I went to a local store to buy something else. I can tell you it was really hard to bypass the 41 mm model they had there. Starlight was "gold enough" in my eyes.

The effective screen estate was indeed just the same size as the 44 mm S5 I was wearing, and I do prefer the S5 44 mm proportions for Watch faces. And without Cellular, the price wasn't too bad. I'm an iPhone Mini type of a person, so yeah, that was a close call. The current 44 mm is great, pixel-wise, and the new 41 mm provides the same content in a smaller watch. I think people should check it out in person before purchase.

If my old bands would work well with the 41 mm, it'd probably have been a deal. The screen is sweet, when it goes practically edge to edge. I had that wow moment with the 41 mm. But at 45 mm it was just TOO big of a screen for my taste. The watch hardware (screen-off) looks and feels just the same size in both sizes as S4...S6.

My buyer's remorse was a combination of factors. The 45 mm color options were limited at launch, Starlight gold-ness not clear, and the (turns out unnecessary for me) Cellular option hiked the price, and I learned that I just don't want so many (new) pixels for the OLED. So it wasn't good value, for me.

For anyone who needs Cellular and isn't as picky as me about how the screen estate is used, and whose bands fit the new size choice ... then the extra cost is probably justified.

The bottom line from that 41 mm experiment is that the edge-to-edge display is indeed awesome, as long as you get the screen size that feels right to you. Purely subjective. Both hardware options are now big enough to interact comfortably with. And the hardware sizes haven't changed in a recognizable way. As a result, I suspect that many 44 mm watch owners might find the new 41 mm a good choice. Depends on how thick your arms, fingers and eyeglasses are. 🤓
Thanks for the detailed report! It sure sounds like you have found what will work best for you.

I think I would be willing to put up with the larger Watch (like my 44mm S6) if the display is bigger and more useful (which it sounds like it is).

I do like my watch to look nice too so I don’t want it to look ridiculously big on my wrists. I have seen some of the round Samsung android watches and they look huge (and ugly). I think the larger Apple Watch will look better on my wrists than Samsung models.

I almost think I shouldn’t show this but I took a picture of my wrist with my S6 44mm (I’m sure some will think that it already looks ridiculously big on my wrist). Still, though, I want the larger screen of the 45mm S7.

Don’t worry! Mine probably looks ridiculous as well. My wrist is so thin that I actually have to wear a 41mm solo loop because the 44mm variants don’t go small enough. This is me with a size 2 solo loop.
The 40mm I thought was slightly small and the 44 slightly too big. The issue with the 41mm is the fact that the case size is the same and that it’s the screen only that got larger. A 43mm size with a larger casing would be preferred. For now, I rather go bigger than smaller.

I think yours looks really good! I ended up having to go with the sports band because I could not adjust it to the smallest size that would fit it. My solo loop (size 4???) wasn’t tight enough some of the time. I may be stuck with the sports loop again with my S7. :)

Is the picture showing you with the 41mm or 45mm S7 (or is it S6)?

I just received my new S7 in Stainless steel in size 45mm.
I wasn’t concerned coming from a 44mm, although I have a small wrist as a runner 🤷🏻

It looks fine. And by the way, I like wearing the smaller bands with the big watch a lot. The proportions look great in my opinion.

That looks great!

How are liking the watch otherwise? Do you like the larger display?

My observations 44mm -> 45mm.

I am a 'medium wrister' I suppose. Wearing my S7 after 5 mins the screen looked no different as I got used to it - don't get me wrong it is noticeably bigger, it is just as the case size is virtually the same I got used to it. My other half can't see the difference on my wrist.

I have kept my S5 and when I put that back on, it feels tiny lol when looking at the screen.

If it was me, if you are happy with 44mm, i am pretty sure you'll love the 45mm. Wear it for a few hours, then put your old one on and I more or less guarantee you won't go back :)

The main thing as others have said is you need to be happy with it and all our observations are personal.

Enjoy!

Lots of great suggestions here that I'm quoting to second!

Heck with the old 44 mm bands. 💸

Pulled the trigger and bought the Starlight 41 mm S7 Nike model. The screen size is now perfect IMO. Edge-to-edge it's the same as my well-served 44 mm S5 was. I like the proportions this way. But the watch itself is more compact, lighter. Brighter screen is easier to read in wrist-down mode. And of course, a brand new battery.

I get how many people prefer the larger screen, but Mini is my thing, with or without glasses.

Rearding collected watch bands. I think often many of us don't use most of them regularly anyway. I can only speak for me but I have my 1-3 favourite bands and the rest collect dust. I got a different size this year too and was quite happy to buy a few new bands for it. That being said, I ordered both sizes of watches, just to be sure. Maybe (like you said) the small one will feel like the old big one for me because of the bigger screen. I've always liked both sizes and can't wait to compare them this time. Will get my order next week. 😊

Apparently the old bands can be used when going from 44 to 41. The connectors will stick out a little, but depending on one’s attitude, they can be thought of as bumpers against scuffs 🤣

This is S7 41 mm Starlight, with Camel as face color, and a 44 mm leather band from eBay. Maybe not fit for a Hollywood gala, but plenty good for daily affairs. As said, “gold enough”.

The band color plays a big role in how Starlight is perceived. It’s smack middle between gold and silver. Indoors it’s more gold. Outside it’s more silver.

Wrist diameter: 195 mm.

I'm a man with smaller 162mm wrists. I've always worn the 42 and 44mm AW and felt the smaller size just seemed too tiny. I just got the 45mm and was concerned but I still think it looks great. In 2021 the trend in watches remains firmly in the *larger* size trend which you see across all watches including mechanicals from Rolex, Omega etc. which continue to update their classic lines with ever larger standard face sizes. I asked my family and they all agree it looks fine.

My wife, 16 year old daughter, and 13 year old son have very thin wrists and they all agree it would be too large for them (they all have 40mm S4-S6 watches) but I'm sure the 41mm S7 with a 20% larger screen would work great for them.

Thanks for posting this. My watch is still two weeks out on delivery and I’ve been nervous because I have small wrists that even the small watch would look too big on me (I’m a size 3 solo loop with the 40mm watch, and would probably be a 2 or smaller on the larger watch). You’ve set me at ease. Your watch looks great, not too big at all.

You're absolutely right. I like to mix band and watch sizes too. Nobody will ever notice if you wear a band that's too small or too big.
