That's exactly the problem that got Apple into this mess, if no bumper were needed there would be no problem. I'm sure most quality control issues can be over looked but when a cell PHONE fails at doing what it was meant to do and thats make calls then the manufacturer (Apple) has a big nightmare to deal with.

True, but if Apple included that bumper (it could have been a black bumper, allowing them to continue selling the other colors at $29 a pop), with every iPhone 4 they would have avoided this mess entirely IMO. You would have had a small subset complaining I'm sure, but by including it in the package (and by extention, ensuring it was compatible with docking stations and all other Apple-produced peripheries) we would clearly have a slam-dunk top-notch smartphone.

In fact, I'm sure it will be just that...."Damage Control."

Something along the lines of "We've sold over 2MM of these phones to date with less than a 4% owner dissatisfaction rate. But we are Apple and we are NOT happy with 'only' a 4% rate, so we are here to offer......" Something will then be offered to placate the foaming-at-the-mouth consumers who are all worked up over minor issues.

What are you really expecting them to say? "This was our worst launch in history and we are profoundly sorry." This is a business....they are going to act like one.

They tried skirting the issue by initially offering a software fix but insulting peoples intelligence instead of admitting there's a problem got Apple in hot water. I'm sure they will try put the best spin on iPhone 4's best attributes like sales (no one cares). In the long run how they handle this mess will either make people lose confidence in them or give them another chance.

Here we go again with the "they sold over 2 million lemons" rebuttal.
If there are so many satisfied customers why is Apple holding a press conference? Damage control?

2 million lemons? The only problem I have if you even want to call it that is the death grip and I have to make sure my fingers are positioned just right and squeeze pretty hard to slow down speed test. Even then my phone does not drop calls. If I hold it casually with my left hand in the death grip position, speed test doesn't even slow down. My proximity sensor works fine, my screen has no yellow spots, my camera works perfectly and my glass has not cracked. I know 4 people with iPhone 4s and none of us are have problems. Two of them are left handed and using the phone naked.

If you hate yours so much, return it.

I'm sure an educated consumer would NEVER knowingly buy a defective product that needs an aid to help it do what it should do unaided. As said before 1.7 million (including myself) were blind sided by not knowing of iPhone 4's numerous issues prior to purchasing one. I'm hanging on to mine until I see what Apple has to offer.

Easily scratched?! Easily broken due to glass back and front?!

Geez, people don't seem to look after stuff nowadays

I don't think the iPhone4 is a disaster. I think that (as of today) Apple's PR and handling of any/all issues regarding the phone has been a complete disaster.

This.

The iPhone 4 is the best phone I've ever owned. Warts and all.

Your kidding right? They have sold over 2 million already, try to find one in stock somewhere. Most of us are happy with them. It is better in every way than my 3GS. These threads are getting very old.

The amount sold has NOTHING to do with satisfied customers. Nice try. Please stop using such crap. Especially when it doesn't take into account how many of them are screwed up or returned. Apple NEVER posts those numbers. Go figure.

Barring the gigantic fail of the antenna and reception issue on my phone - everything else is fine. It's the best phone I have had to date. As long as I hold it right. *sigh*

If Apple resolves that, I will be happy. If they don't, not sure what I will do honestly.

Is it official that anybody that starts another thread on this beaten dead horse of a subject is an idiot?

Seriously, if you wanna debate if the iPhone 4 is a failure or not, do it in one of the thousand other threads on the subject. I personally don't care either way. But I'm so freaking tired of 50 new threads a day, it's making this forum useless for any other use but for people to bicker.

With all the bad press, countless customer complaints and bad reviews from electronic publications like Consumer Reports, is iPhone 4 an official PR disaster and blunder for Apple? Will iPhone 4 go down as Apples worst electronic device ever made?

edit:
The Major Problems:
Easily scratched
Glass easily shattered (front and back)
"Death Grip" issue
Proximity sensor
Yellow blotches on screen

Newton takes the cake for that.

The number of iP4's sold is only relevant to its success IF the phone proves to be reliable.

If there is a recall, then the larger the initial sales, the bigger the disaster. These huge numbers could actually harm Apple.

I dont think the device is a major failure as the way Apple and Steve handled everything regarding consumers issues.

Is the i4 a good product, yes, has some design flaws but it can be fixed

Did Apple do a good PR jobs and smooth consumers concerns, no way

HARDLY minor issues.

You are so correct!!!!

People are trying to justify making the right choice of buying an iPhone 4 so they throw in that "they sold over 2 million" jibberish.

It would be nice to know exactly how many were returned.

Just asking

We have no idea why Apple is holding this press confrence. For all we know they could come out and deny everything.

don't take the internets so seriously, this is a message board after all?

So where do you stand on this now that you've been educated? I hate saying the same tired cliche that seems to be said a lot, but if you have issues with it you should return it, you're still within the window.

Besides that, including the bumper with the iPhone, and maybe some kind of statement saying it is not recommended to use without a bumper, would have been more honest and does not make it a "defective" product - the key is being upfront about it.

It's not the first 2m sales they are concerned about -- it's the 2nd, 3rd, and forward. AAPL is getting beat up b/c the CR report started to seed doubt in new buyers minds. It creates uncertainty of earnings which WS hates. Apple needs to blunt the criticism & defend itself before it loses total control of the issue.

NO, the idiocy here is that when I read through the front page every other freaking thread is a thread about if the iPhone 4 is a failure or why it is a failure or why it is not. Every other damn poster in this forum thinks that what they have to say is SO DAMNED IMPORTANT that it requires a new thread.

If you aren't adding something original or unique to the forum, don't post a new thread. It's that simple. (Notice I chose to post in this thread instead of bitching in a new thread?)

The problem with that is that I used to enjoy coming here to either find new cool ideas for my phone or troubleshoot issues I'm having. But the forum is so littered with reposts rehashing the same **** over and over that it's a pain in the ass to navigate.

I agree. The only reason I am posting in these threads is that I am tired of the same thing. When I bought my phone, I knew about the issues people were having and I know a bunch of people trying to buy one now even after all the negative press. Don't buy something on launch if you want to know about possible problems before you buy. That is a no brainer that any electronic device enthusiast knows. I played with my roommates and read the reviews before I bought mine. I was fully aware of the problems some users were reporting but considered it an acceptable risk considering everyone I knew with one was happy with it.

"Last year, Ruben Caballero, a senior engineer and antenna expert, informed Apple’s management the device’s design may cause reception problems, said the person, who is not authorized to speak on Apple’s behalf and asked not to be identified," Bloomberg said.

Just to add to the Apple woes

The issues I have is what everyone else has. I'd be a damn fool if a waste my time going and returning or getting an exchange for something that Apple has no control of. Like I said I'm going to wait and see what Apple has to offer then I'm going to make my decision.

BTW it's so easy to tell someone to return their device BUT what does that do to address the issues?
