The original iPhone does feel more solid but it is just because it weighs more. The 3G is less slippery. My original iPhone has scratches on the back. So far my black 3G doessn't have any scratches or cracks. White will show cracks better than the black. When we do durability testing we always use white versions of our products because the cracks show up better. In fact, we will paint a part with white paint to find the cracks if we are testing it as bare metal.

I like the Black 3G better. My wife still has her original and my son has my original so I can compare all the time.

The original iPhone may be better looking than the 3G to some, but it doesn't really matter, because if you have either phone and you are smart, you'll get a case for it. A case may detract from the aesthetic of the phone, but the protection a case provides from dropping the phone is worth any drawback.

Almost everyone drops their phone at some point, and if you drop the iPhone without a case, you are much more likely to get a cracked screen.

And of course, with a case, the 2G and 3G look pretty much the same.

True for most people, but I have never in my life, dropped one of my cell phones (watch I'm going to drop my 3G in the next 5 minutes). But the only reason that I have a case is for scratches. If I had the 2G iPhone, I would have never gotten a case.

I love the curved back of the iPhone 3G but I love the feel of the metal on my 2G.

The curved back of the phone is nice. To bad they couldn't incorporate both designs. I understand the reasons for going to a plastic back (better reception, etc.)...still it would be cool to have a metal back like the first gen iphone
