I currently have a launch day X and I want to upgrade today. Going to an electronics store after I finish work to pick up either an 11 Pro or a 12 Pro.

I'm honestly scared of buying a 12 Pro because of all the issues I've read on the forums. I don't really care that the screen is warmer / little yellowish, but the fact that the OLED pixels sometimes can't turn off completely and display pure black colors is really disappointing.

Are there good units with perfect screen?

lol no

if it was this would be all over the media. people having issues is a very small amount

I wouldn’t worry. Just buy from a shop with a decent return policy in case you’re afraid of faults in production.

The true black problem seems to be on every iPhone 12 a problem. But people don’t see it I think so. You can only see it in a 100% black room but you have to wait for you eyes otherwise you cannot see it.
The yellow tint is normal on the 12 lineup. They calibrated it that way :)

For some reason iPhones attract many more obsessive compulsive and neurotic owners than other phone manufacturers. You just don’t see these threads elsewhere. I’m going from a Note 10+ to a Pro Max 12 and I’m seeing none of the laundry list of screen complaints. It’s the same thing each year as I switch between platforms.

Yes because apple is more expensive and then users want 100% perfect device. I can unterstand this a little bit.
I love the 12 Pro max besides the true black problem ...

@dave_hun Yes, of the tens of millions of iPhone series 12 units produced and sold, they ALL have issues. J/K, you need to realize that when you're on a forum, whether it be a tech forum like this, or a needlepoint forum for example, you're going to have a percentage of reported "issues". Also try to remember that folks on forums are usually the UBER example of the average consumer. There's members here who swap 5,6,7 times until they find that "perfect" phone, be it the display, or a gap around the edge, etc. Is that indicative of the type of person on a forum. This is a topic with each and every year's new iPhone and no it does not affect every one. I've never had an iPhone with a bad display. Knock on wood. Sorry I haven't had my coffee yet, I didn't say welcome aboard!

The true black problem is not realls an issue because many people can't see it.
Otherwise the 12 Pro Max has not really a problem for me.

The black level on my Pro Max is better than that of my Note 10 +. And I never considered the Samsung to have a black problem.

Fairly sure there were various threads in relation to a different screen issues that some people were having or noticing with the X as well.

If you’re sufficiently sensitive to color tint/hue issues (most people apparently aren’t) or like to watch video or read on your phone in total darkness with 100% black background, then yes, all iPhone 12s seem to have issues. This is based on the observation that, pretty much without exception, people experiencing these issues (myself included) weren’t able to fix them by exchanging their devices, even multiple times. What can be fixed by exchanges is screen uniformity issues and lacking brightness/contrast, and more extreme forms of yellow tint. But there is no universally perfect display.

That being said, you may very well not be personally affected by those issues if you’re not sensitive in that way. The only way to find out is to try yourself though.

Edit: An additional issue is that True Tone is much too strong (very yellow) on iPhone 12s with indoor lighting for some reason. This should be fixable in software, but so far isn’t.

You claim this is a 12 problem. Have you found any iPhones or non iPhones that doesn’t have this problem.

I personally don’t have any OLED iPhones to compare to (was upgrading from an LCD model), but the general gist of those experiencing these issues AND coming from a previous OLED model is that it is a particular 12 problem, and they weren’t able to find a 12 model that matches their older model. This includes reports where people have compared 12 vs 11Pro in Apple stores and the 12’s are more yellow/green-tinted across the board. The raised-blacks issue is also specific to the 12.

I currently also have a Note 10 plus and before that a 10 Max. And there is no problems with my current Pro Max 12. If you are so particular about backscreen lighting while reading then consider a Kindle. But even in the black of night that screen won’t be perfect.

yes, if multiple forum members have replaced their device multiple times with same issue persisting what does that say ? Definitely not a coincidence or “ bad batch” problem. Right.

I don't know if you mean all-all iPhone 12 Pros, or just the smaller unit... as I have the 12 Pro Max. I just stepped into a closet and closed the door behind me -- total darkness with just me, my iPhone and the first minute or so of the Avengers: Infinity War movie. The blacks were indeed pitch black, to the point that when the entire screen goes black, I can't see anything at all... so whatever that issue is, I don't believe it is afflicting mine.

(I'm also a former iPhone X user, and have previously compared my iPhone X to a couple of LCD based iPhones; IMHO, a good OLED screen really is a stark difference.)

You have to try this with 20% brightness and then you will see not 100% pitch black ...
