The only product I ever bought AppleCare for was my Mac and IMac. I don’t feel devices are worth it.
Not sure why'd you buy AppleCare for an iMac. If it doesn't go bad the first year it likely never will. And it is not like it is portable and you lug it all around. Plus most credit cards will extend the warranty for 12-24 months - just as long as AppleCare coverage. Did you end up even using it for your iMac?

I remember the good old days when the 4/4s was out and people would come in with shattered backs. It was easy to replace, just unscrew at the bottom and swap out the back panel for $30. No screen replacement though. Jesus man, $549 for a device replacement. Its almost doesn't make sense to not get AC+ Phones are getting stupid expensive. Ill wait until next year to upgrade when OLED isn't treated like a luxury feature and just becomes standard like the retina was on MacBooks/Pros for awhile.

Over the years I have never bought Applecare and never had any of their devices break on me. The amount of money I saved over the years payed for my iPhone X.

Same here, only purchased AC for my iMac's or before that Mac Pro's but never for anything else. So far so good! X arriving on Friday!

In the EU Apple Care has little to no use since EU consumer protection laws are quite good. Furthermore, in the case one might damage ones screen, might as well repair it and spend as much as Apple Care +the fee.
And this is one reason why some things cost more in the EU than in the states. The consumer protection the EU requires isn’t free. It’s passed along as a cost increase. Currency fluctuation, legal requirements, regulations, expected volume and taxes can really impact pricing in a region.

What most people don’t know is that Apple will give you a refund for unused AppleCare+. Say you only use it for a year, if you keep your receipt, Apple will give you a store credit for the pro-rated amount remaining to spend as you like. I use it every year to buy my accessories for my next iPhone, Apple Watch, or MacBook.
Yup got 54 bucks back on my iPhone 7 it’s great they refund! Do they refund if you use a gift card to purchase AppleCare?

I’ve always paid monthly insurance through AT&T with the sole reason being theft and loss coverage.

Only have Apple Care on my Apple Watch 2 since it is expected to take a beating versus the phone that is hand held or in my pocket.

Agreed. consumer law in the UK covers hardware defects for 6 years from date of delivery as long as the Apple product is directly bought from Apple, I believe. Therefore unless you require accidental damage, it is definitely not worth buying. They'll even replace you battery for free if it holds less than 80% charge, as long as it's still within the consumer law's 6 year period.

Not quite. From your own link: „Any defect or non-conformity of goods with the contract which becomes apparent within 6 months of delivery are presumed to have existed at the time of delivery. After the expiry of this 6 month period, the burden to prove that the defect or non-conformity of goods with the contract existed on delivery generally shifts to the consumer.“

In other words: after 6 months, you have to prove that the product was defective from the start, which is very hard to do. Hence a manufacturer‘s warranty is much better than these consumer law rights. Also accidental damage is obviously the main reason to get Apple Care+, so it doesn‘t make sense to brush that aside.

For the X, I would say if you‘re generally careful with your stuff and put a case on it to protect the glass back, it‘s probably ok not to get AC+. If you tend to drop your phones or (like me) go caseless, AC+ is a very good idea and at the very least gives you peace of mind.

I have bought a phone every year since the iPhone 3G and never bought AppleCare once, 9 phones. I have had two screen breaks which cost $150-$200 each to repair. I had the home button fail once but that was covered under warranty.

Cost of AppleCare was far greater than the cost of repairs. Not worth it in my case.

I have never broke the glass. However, I have had multiple iPhones replaced over the years under AppleCare for battery and screen issues. Every time they just gave me a new replacement iPhone.
During the first year, battery and screen issues are covered with the regular warranty.

Overall the Applecare warranty has been cost effective. Whether for Macs or mobile devices having the ability to get a repair on frequently used device such as a phone or a laptop is worth it. For the phone, most issues have been a hardware problem and Apple have replaced them without any hassle. Often for Mac repairs, the cost far exceeds the warranty fee and even on one occasion got a free MBP charger when it was clear that it was not a fault.

After spending at least a thousand dollars on a brand new iPhone X, you may be debating whether it's really worth it to spend an additional few hundred dollars on an AppleCare+ plan to insure your shiny new smartphone.

applecare-for-iphone-x.jpg

AppleCare+ is an optional, premium warranty plan that extends an iPhone's warranty coverage to two years from the original purchase date of the device, and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a service fee of $29 for screen damage, or $99 for any other damage.

AppleCare+ for iPhone X costs $199 upfront, compared to $129 for the iPhone 8 and $149 for the iPhone 8 Plus. As with virtually any form of insurance, AppleCare+ only pays for itself in the event you accidentally damage your device.

To determine if AppleCare+ is worthwhile, we first must look at how much it will cost to repair the iPhone X without the coverage.

iphone-x-service-repair-fees.jpg

Apple recently confirmed it will charge out-of-warranty rates of $279 for iPhone X screen repairs, and $549 for any other damage to the device, unless it is a manufacturing defect covered by Apple's standard one-year limited warranty.

With AppleCare+ for iPhone X, the price of a repair would be the $199 upfront cost of the plan plus a $29 to $99 incidental fee.

If you shatter your iPhone X's screen once, for example, you would pay $279 out of warranty. With the upfront cost of AppleCare+ coupled with the screen repair incidental fee, you would pay $228, so purchasing the plan can save you money in the long run if an accident happens.

If you shatter your iPhone X's back glass, having AppleCare+ is even more worthwhile. Apple's flat rate is $549 for this type of damage, while the upfront cost of AppleCare+ coupled with a $99 incidental fee totals $298.

The chart below shows that AppleCare+ will save you money in the long run if you damage your iPhone X in any way just once in two years.

Even if you never damage your iPhone X, AppleCare+ has one additional perk that can be quite valuable: 24/7 priority access to Apple support advisors via phone or online chat for two years after your iPhone X's purchase date. Without it, iPhone users are covered by just 90 days of complimentary telephone support.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer as to whether AppleCare+ is worth it, as it very much depends on how careful you are. But given the iPhone X's out-of-warranty repair fees are quite high, it may be more worthwhile than ever.

AppleCare+ can be purchased through Apple's online or retail stores. If not purchased alongside the iPhone, it can be added within 60 days, pending a diagnostic test to ensure no damage has occurred in that time.

It's also worth noting that if you cancel your AppleCare+ plan before the two-year coverage period expires, you'll get a partial refund based on the percentage of unexpired coverage, minus the value of any service already provided. A cancellation fee of $25 or 10 percent of the pro-rata amount, whichever is less, applies.

All prices above are listed in U.S. dollars. AppleCare+ and Apple's out-of-warranty repair fees vary in other countries.

Very excellent article. I have not purchased Apple Care + before for all my iPhones but since iPhone X has a new design and might be vulnerable with any issues, it is much safer to have this insurance at this moment. Some people might be against it but a peace of mind is also important since the device has a premium price.

I have Apple Care on many of my Apple products, now I’m not sure if things are different in Canada than the US but for example my 2012 MacBook Pro, I’ve never been refused support or charged for support by Apple for it, even about 9 months ago when I wanted to upgrade it to a SSD Apple put me on the right track of how to for free, try that with a 5 year old PC and see what support DELL gives you (try giving your credit card # then they help)

I guess the 12.00 that T-Mobile charges me for their insurance which actually includes AppleCare+ isn't such a bad deal after all. All of the benefits of lost / stolen replacement, plus two incidents of accidental damage through AppleCare+ is a win/win depending on how long you plan to keep the device.

Not worth it in Europe. We got two years protection anyway.

A good friend runs an own insurance office and said to me never buy insurances unless you cant afford the consiquences. So like you need one for the house and medical stuff and the rest is up to your personal financial situation.

Meh. In 10 years of owning iPhones, every single one, I’ve never cracked a screen or done any serious damage to a phone. I treat it like the expensive piece of technology that it is. My gf throws hers around, puts it in her back pocket and even keeps it there when sitting down. I cringe every time. For her, she’d need this. Ill be upgrading again in a year anyway. I’ll save the $200.

Honestly, I've had more times where I wish I had AppleCare on a Mac than an iDevice or Watch.

Will probably forgo AppleCare for the X. Still wish I had bought AppleCare for the MacBook I got earlier this year.

I use to think the same thing until a few years ago I broke the screen on my phone twice (because I didn't have Apple Care the 2 screen replacements cost me as much as a new phone) in the span of a month. Last week, I some how cracked the screen on my watch and if I didn't have Apple it would have cost me $268 which is almost the cost of a new watch. I think it is worth the cost especially now that the iPhone 8 & X have glass fronts and backs.

The all glass body is a big factor for me and I don’t know how easily it can be quantified. But, simply put, it seems like there’s more on this latest round of devices that is breakable to begin with.

Assuming one gets 256 and ac+ and a leather case or something like that that's 1400 before tax :O

Definitely getting out of control

Ac+ I always skip but easy one to skip here especially. That is prohibitively priced

Gonna upgrade yearly. That way I’m always under warranty. Just gotta make sure I don’t crack the screen.
