How much of a refund? If I buy the coverage for $200 and get a refund next year (and I don't use any of the accidental damage coverage), how much money would I get back?

It’s pro-rated by month I believe. So it’s divided by 24, and you get back 1/24 for every month you have left.
 
After years of buying Apple Car for my devices, this time I may skip it. I skipped it for my Apple TV, and my iPad. It made sense to buy it for the Apple Watch, as it's easiest to damage. I also got it for my MacBook and it's already paid for itself with two replacements due to keyboardgate. My iPhone 7 Plus, I'll seek the refund.
 
It’s so funny to see people say “this isn’t the Apple I like”. It’s 2017, technology has advanced THEREFORE the prices to maintain said advanced technology will COST more! It’s like you guys want a 2017 iPhone with 2007 iPhone prices. If that’s the case, start a company where you are offering world class products to your customers and charge them what YOU would want to pay as a consumer. Let’s see how long you stay in business. Apple has always been a company to provide OPTIONS...so as a consumer (and an adult) YOU CHOOSE what you want to do. There is NO FINE PRINT that says the people who bought the iPhone X last Friday HAD TO buy it. Good day.
 
The answer from a financial point of view is that extended warranties are never good deals. They are priced to be high-profit products, and they are. By purchasing one you are simply betting that your luck is going to be worse than the manufacturer thinks it will be, and since they know the actual probabilities, and you don't, it's a bet that over time the house will always win.
My house has four children in it. Three of them are two years old.

Of course you're talking about Apple being "the house", but in my case, the chance of accidental damage to the iPhone are probably higher than yours. No matter how much I plan to treat my expensive phone gently there are going to be times when it is vulnerable. If one child reaches for a hot stove, or falls into a pool, or picks up a screw driver with an eye on the electrical socket, or any number of immediate hazards, I won't take time to secure my expensive phone before rescuing the even more precious child. That leaves three children watching for the phone to become available.

The rule about the "always winning" with insurance is based on both time and a large number of people who purchase the insurance. Apple doesn't charge me more for AppleCare +, even though I live in a two story house with tile flooring and multiple high-energy children. I pay the same $199 as someone who is single, keeps the phone in an Otterbox, and always walks on the grass just in case.

From a financial point of view, it depends on your situation, which is something you know about better than I do (just as I know more about mine than you do).

What if I broke the screen and had it replaced? That means I won’t get any refund right?
 
I use to think the same thing until a few years ago I broke the screen on my phone twice (because I didn't have Apple Care the 2 screen replacements cost me as much as a new phone) in the span of a month. Last week, I some how cracked the screen on my watch and if I didn't have Apple it would have cost me $268 which is almost the cost of a new watch. I think it is worth the cost especially now that the iPhone 8 & X have glass fronts and backs.

Individual countries' implementations of the EU guideline may be good, however as a German citizen I can tell you from first hand experience that after 6 months (so before the limited Apple guarantee runs out!) the 2 year seller warranty becomes useless if the seller decides to play hardball.

Reverse onus, look it up.

Several sellers are lax about it, Amazon has a reputation of being very pro-consumer in this regard and don't insist on you proving anything to them, however if you got your phone with your contract from your carrier, in my case that was an iPhone 4 with Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile Germany) you're SOL, because those guys play hardball.

It's crazy that one, the cost to fix a broken back panel is greater than the cost to fix the display, and two, that fixing a broken back panel is roughly half the cost of a new iPhone.
 
Yup got 54 bucks back on my iPhone 7 it’s great they refund! Do they refund if you use a gift card to purchase AppleCare?

I’m not 100% sure of the answer to that. If you can purchase AppleCare with a gift card, I’m fairly sure the same policy would apply, a refund for unused months would be paid in the form of Apple Store credit.
 
I've been debating this and still haven't decided, want to wait until I get it and see. I haven't bought it in years, didn't buy it for my Apple Watch (still have Series 0, no damage over the years). Like others, I'm obviously concerned about the amount of glass on this, but am sort of hoping that with a case (ordered Caudabe Lucid Clear) and a tempered glass screen protector (haven't decided which one yet), and a bit of reasonable care, that that will be sufficient...

You can't compare these 2, there are not even close regarding price.
No it's not. 20% is 20% and both insurances cover accidents. $200 for a $1000 phone for 2 years, would be no different than paying $8000 for 2 years on a $40,000 vehicle. Go ahead and pay the $200, but you are getting ripped off.

Not getting an X, but if I were, it would be without AppleCare. I have had iPhones since 2007 and never needed AppleCare. Did drop my SE once and got a little cosmetic damage around the frame, but nothing on the screen and nothing functional (only had a screen protector on that phone, no case).

I think being careful is a better plan than paying 20% of the phone's price for insurance.
 
I have always purchased Apple Care but not now as the cost is over the top. How many times would you drop your iPhone and break the screen. I'll have Apple Store apply a screen protector which covers the screen for 12 months if the screen breaks. I'll have the screen protector replaced every year just to have the screen breakage protection.
 
I've had apple care on the last three iPhones and have had all three replaced under Apple care.

Though I must say £200, it's finally got to a stage where it's getting too expansive .

That is correct. If you use up your AppleCare for repairs, you won’t get a refund. But, I just wanted to let folks know that if they haven’t had any damage to their phone or have made no AppleCare claims, there’s a refund available, and it’s pretty easy to get.
 
imho it‘s usually much cheaper to get a regular insurance for all your devices. runs longer and pays for completely destroyed devices, loss and theft as well.

The point is... the iPhone X is NOT the only expensive phone on the market. It is the most expensive phone on the market that no one wants to pay for. My theory, as consumers (and adults) we all have the OPTION of not paying for these devices. There’s nothing wrong with the X or the price...consumers just want a luxurious phone for a non-luxurious price.

After spending at least a thousand dollars on a brand new iPhone X, you may be debating whether it's really worth it to spend an additional few hundred dollars on an AppleCare+ plan to insure your shiny new smartphone.

AppleCare+ is an optional, premium warranty plan that extends an iPhone's warranty coverage to two years from the original purchase date of the device, and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a service fee of $29 for screen damage, or $99 for any other damage.

AppleCare+ for iPhone X costs $199 upfront, compared to $129 for the iPhone 8 and $149 for the iPhone 8 Plus. As with virtually any form of insurance, AppleCare+ only pays for itself in the event you accidentally damage your device.

To determine if AppleCare+ is worthwhile, we first must look at how much it will cost to repair the iPhone X without the coverage.

Apple recently confirmed it will charge out-of-warranty rates of $279 for iPhone X screen repairs, and $549 for any other damage to the device, unless it is a manufacturing defect covered by Apple's standard one-year limited warranty.

With AppleCare+ for iPhone X, the price of a repair would be the $199 upfront cost of the plan plus a $29 to $99 incidental fee.

If you shatter your iPhone X's screen once, for example, you would pay $279 out of warranty. With the upfront cost of AppleCare+ coupled with the screen repair incidental fee, you would pay $228, so purchasing the plan can save you money in the long run if an accident happens.

If you shatter your iPhone X's back glass, having AppleCare+ is even more worthwhile. Apple's flat rate is $549 for this type of damage, while the upfront cost of AppleCare+ coupled with a $99 incidental fee totals $298.

The chart below shows that AppleCare+ will save you money in the long run if you damage your iPhone X in any way just once in two years.

Even if you never damage your iPhone X, AppleCare+ has one additional perk that can be quite valuable: 24/7 priority access to Apple support advisors via phone or online chat for two years after your iPhone X's purchase date. Without it, iPhone users are covered by just 90 days of complimentary telephone support.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer as to whether AppleCare+ is worth it, as it very much depends on how careful you are. But given the iPhone X's out-of-warranty repair fees are quite high, it may be more worthwhile than ever.

AppleCare+ can be purchased through Apple's online or retail stores. If not purchased alongside the iPhone, it can be added within 60 days, pending a diagnostic test to ensure no damage has occurred in that time.

It's also worth noting that if you cancel your AppleCare+ plan before the two-year coverage period expires, you'll get a partial refund based on the percentage of unexpired coverage, minus the value of any service already provided. A cancellation fee of $25 or 10 percent of the pro-rata amount, whichever is less, applies.

All prices above are listed in U.S. dollars. AppleCare+ and Apple's out-of-warranty repair fees vary in other countries.

I think if you need insurance on a phone, then you're probably spending too much on a phone for your income. I'll just pay the repair costs or buy a new one if it breaks, like everything else I've got that costs that much.
 
I totally understand screen replacement price, since its OLED, but back glass? For that amount of money you can get brand new Galaxy S8. This really is amazing how stupid Apple is becoming with that kind of pricing.
The "out of warranty repair" was always about half the price of the cheapest new device. And you don't use it for any repair. You don't pay for repairs in the first year anyway, and in the EU you most likely don't pay in the second year. You pay for the "out of warranty repair" if you have a three, four year old device, it breaks down beyond reasonable repair, and instead of buying a new device for full price you replace your old, broken device with a new one for half the price.

For example, if your three year old iPhone 6+ with tons of memory breaks down beyond repair, you have the choice of buying a new phone (for example a very similar iPhone 6s+ with the same memory for $649), or get your phone replaced with an identical brand new one for $329. Your choice.

The iPhone X is more expensive to start with, so that replacement will obviously more expensive. People won't pay that price today, or next year, but in three years time to replace an old phone with a new one.

Imagine you bought a car for $20,000 in 2005. Now after 12 years it's ready for the junkyard, but your dealer offers you an identical, brand new, 2005 model for $10,000. Would you take it? Many would.
 
Assuming one gets 256 and ac+ and a leather case or something like that that's 1400 before tax :O

I have a question...if a consumer doesn’t have the means to purchase and insure a product (should something happen to it), shouldn’t they decide NOT to purchase that device? Or does the consumer have the means and purchases the device only to complain about the money they DIDN'T HAVE TO spend? Just asking.
 
Does standard warranty apply outside home country for iPhones? Is apple care reqd for fixing warranty issues in a foreign country?
No, for mobile devices (MacBooks, iPads, iPhones) that you are expected to carry with you all the time, you can go to any Apple Store anywhere in the world and get the warranty repair. Where there are no Apple Stores, there is usually some dealer authorised to do warranty repairs. If neither is available, you can send it to Apple for repair. No Apple Care required.

Half of 128 used and lots of stuff I could do away with. For the price I better love the X and screen

But no in case of getting ac+ and needing one screen replacement and saving $50 for all that trouble vs out of pocket, isn't a great deal to bet against yourself IMO

The math isn't looking good.

But why? Insurance is purchased based on financial security and is adjusted in price based on the cost of the device. Secondly, a phone is much more likely to break due to negligence than an iMac or MacBook.

People seem to disregard the importance of iPhone or iPad insurance due to some sort of bias I don’t understand.
