And if America didn't exist, neither would Steve Jobs, so hah. And if he never existed, neither would Apple. And all you guys would be stuck with Microsoft or Linux.

Ah yes, Microsoft, that well known British business. :p

I was talking to British guy a while ago and he said that American English spelling was actually the King's English long ago.

The Kings English from long ago... that would be French, and not (British or American) English.

Isn't it hosted on Scottish servers?

I own the DNS servers that MR uses, which is why the Scottish address appears on netcraft etc., but those servers, as well as the web servers, are all in the US.

Is it my imagination or did you used to be a God rather than a Demi?

Your imagination :) Although I am in the same group as the gods on the forum leaders list I don't do the same work as the other gods do so I artificially set myself back to the usual mod title on posts.

Allegedly there is also something called "Australian English", but I don't believe it.

There is, along with New Zealand English as well. The spelling is more "correct", but just with the regional sayings, slang, and what not.

If anyone from Britain ever comes to the US that has never been you are in for a shock. We have managed to butcher the language, especially the grammar. It's sad really and a testament to our lazy ways :-(

Good grief, butcher in what way? They're all just divergences from a common path, and, as has been mentioned earlier, American English has likely diverged the least. Along the way, spellings, meanings, and idioms have developed and changed according to societal effects on the language.

Pretentious Americans who think they're special because they like to sound British (and therefore, presumably, more intelligent) are one of the silliest sights in the US.

So many different kinds of English language now.
I am also wondering if there are a lot of people here with English not being their first language?

Naismith didn't "invent" anything. He stole the idea from Tlatchtli (or Ulama), played by the Aztec/Maya/Olmec. Five-pound rubber ball, vertical hoop 20' off the ground, no hands allowed, first team to score wins, losing team loses their heads. Now there's a sport.

Bloody prissy yanquis... :p

So, he was the Bill Gates of basketball?

And I am not american either. I am of middle eastern descent.
I have another question...
In British tv shows, I see a lot of people using Macs. I don't see a lot of Macs on American TV shows. Are Macs more common/popular in Great Britain than United States?

I dont thinks macs are generally more popular in the UK although it seems they are gathering speed daily. I work in Computer retail and we are selling more macs than ever before. I "Switched" over a year ago when I was fed up with substandard operating systems making my life a nightmare (M$). That said I aslo fit into the so labeled "Creatives" group of user as I am an amateur film maker. I believe more people (particularly those in TV and film production) have or are switching to macs as even the BBC here are using Final cut studio on Macs to edit and streamline there HD based broadcasting equipment.

This might explain more macs popping up in tv shows and the like, perhaps they get a bulk discount at the BBC for apple ads in the shows eh?

BTW spell english words however you like, my brain can read a word with all the right letters in the wrong order except the first and last letters in the correct position so what difference does the odd vowel here in there make?

Speaking of which, why don't you folks get rid of that worthless piece of historical oddity, namely the monarchy. As far as I see it, it only serves as a drain on resources. It's high time you entered the 20th century. :D
Fixed. :p
Don't mess with Texas.

Pff, Rhode Island still celebrates the Gaspée Affair, and was the only state to vote against the 18th Amendment, so :p to Texas.

Speaking of American accents being older, look at this.

By opening night, they will have rehearsed using phonetic scripts for two months and, hopefully, will render the play just as its author intended. They say their accents are somewhere between Australian, Cornish, Irish and Scottish, with a dash of Yorkshire - yet bizarrely, completely intelligible if you happen to come from North Carolina.

I have also heard that in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, they speak with Irish accents that are no longer spoken in Ireland.

By using British spellings of words you are not being environmentally friendly.

Think about those unnecessary letters thrown into words. When you write them out and print them out you'll need more space since those extra letters take up space. Then you'll be using more paper and ink and therefore you are not being green.

But the paper companies claim to plant more trees than they fell. So by using more paper, they're planting more trees!

If you like the earth, use American English. :D

Oh the irony of it all
