So you are talking about a device that just launched, versus something that has been proven for a minimum of 6 months? You can't compare a new screen to a 6+ month old screen. Thats not fair.
Well tell I7guy who is claiming the ipad pro is the king of mobile displays, in reality it's not even in the top 5.

I'll quote part of displaymate review, they go on to say it breaks records in almost every category..

Galaxy Note7 provides many major and important state-of-the-art display enhancements, with mobile OLED display technology now advancing faster than ever. The Galaxy Note7 is the most innovative and high performance Smartphone display that we have ever tested. It leapfrogs the displays on the Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy S7 to become the Best Performing Smartphone Display ever.

The note 5 was the same as the s6/edge, no mention anywhere of any Apple product at the top table of mobile displays. That is why Apple is considering amoled for next year's iPhone.

It's gonna be amazing next year when all of a sudden, all these naysayers are suddenly going to embrace a amoled like the birth of Christ.

Have a nice day sir.

Like many others OLED screen means very little in my decision to upgrade. Camera, (especially twin lenes) battery size, and waterproofing mean much more. Even where the antennas are mean very little as I keep mine in a case 99% of the time, and therefore never see them.

For me , I am only considering getting a new iPhone when something NEW is offered. The iPhone 7 is dreadfully unimpressive in that respect... IF OLED is offered, that would be enough for me to get the new phone. And also knowing that the 2017 WILL have it , would keep me from buying a 2016 Phone without it.
OLED , YES/NO?

OLED is not a deal breaker for me.

Just another opinion...eh?
Erm.. no, an opinion is what you quoted earlier. Displaymate do not give opinions, they measure displays using calibrated equipment and all sorts of fancy scientific gizmos then publish the results.
I'm sorry my friend if it hurts your feelings if those nasty Samsung folk know how to make superior displays to your beloved Apple but sadly, that's how it is. It's been that way for a while now, and tbh, it's gonna be that way for the foreseeable future. Samsung are the market leaders and everyone else is left wondering how on earth they even attempt to follow them. I'm going to hazard a guess that Apple will simply try and copy them... That's what normally works. For them.

You enjoy the rest of your day old friend.

Sorry displaymate is an opinion, no different road and track espousing a car.

It would be nice but not required. But a screen resolution bump is definitely over due.

Actually it hasn't, displaymate has just crowned the note 7 the best mobile screen ever made.. but what do they know eh..
Please do not misquote the article.

The article says "... So the Galaxy Note7 becomes the Best Performing Smartphone Display that we have ever tested."

That is it's the best smartphone display but the the iPad Pro 9.7 still has the best display period.

But you have to admit that AMOLED is worse than IPS. I have yet to see an AMOLED screen hold up in direct sunlight as well as IPS. (Kindle's don't count lol)
Reflectance and contrast are the specs you need to look at to determine usability in direct sunlight. The underlying technology doesn't really matter.

For example the iPhone I think has a reflectance around 2.5 while the note 7 has a reflectance of 4.7.
(Smaller is better)

Nope. I'm going to get the 7+ as an upgrade over the 6. It'll have enough just with the bigger screen, battery, faster internals, and I need more memory. If next year's update is amazeballs then I'll upgrade next year too. /shrug

For those wondering about the benefits of OLED:

"The Future of OLED Smartphones
OLEDs have now evolved and emerged as the premium mobile Smartphone display technology. There is no better confirmation of this than a series of well founded rumors from a number of prominent publications that Apple will be switching the iPhone to OLED displays in 2017.

OLED displays provide a number of significant advantages over LCDs including: being much thinner, much lighter, with a much smaller bezel providing a near rimless design, they can be made flexible and into curved screens, plus they have a very fast response time, better viewing angles, and an always-on display mode. Many of the OLED performance advantages result from the fact that every single sub-pixel in an OLED display is individually directly powered, which results in better color accuracy, image contrast accuracy, and screen uniformity.

Because of their very flexible power management capabilities, OLEDs are not only more power efficient than LCDs for most image content, but they now deliver much higher peak Brightness than LCDs because of this. However, for mostly all white screen content LCDs are likely to remain brighter and more power efficient for a while. OLED displays are now manufactured on flexible substrates, which allows the screens to be curved and rounded like on the Galaxy Note7 and earlier Galaxy Edge and Galaxy Round displays.

Apple’s rumored move to an OLED iPhone is simply a recognition of all of the above, particularly as more and more competing Smartphones come with OLED displays."

As for me, my next tv will absolutely be an OLED with HDR. My phone? Not a requirement but will happen soon enough. Other than my 6s my last few phones have had OLED screens and have all been excellent.

Although I like some things that OLED displays provide, but Apple has proven to make high quality displays as well. Honestly, I'd rather have higher resolution display using the current technology (IPS) than an OLED display that may not even be able to compete with those IPS displays in terms of saturation, color accuracy etc.

I've seen OLED displays and compared them to my iPhone's. It's good in specific circumstances, but overall the iPhone beats them. It's good for the Apple Watch (especially because of the very deep blacks), but I don't think it's enough for an iPhone display.

But I think Apple's focus needs to go at overall quality. Most Fandroids brag about specs with their 4K OLED display, 4 GHz octa-core processor, 4 GB RAM and 20 megapixel camera. Yet, the iPhone is a strong competitor and even beats those devices at many points with its 750/1080p display, 1.85 GHz dual-core CPU, 2 GB RAM and 12 megapixel camera. I hope Apple continues this and the next iPhone won't be all about specs, but about what makes it a great device. Because that's what Steve wanted with the iPhone. Specs wouldn't matter to him, the end user experience did. You don't want an OLED display, you want a GREAT display. You don't want a 20 megapixel camera, you want to make GREAT photos with it. I could go on and on, but I think my point is clear, right?

Again, there's no need for an OLED display, especially if it's not as good as Apple's current displays.

It'd be nice but no, chances are I'll need the faster processor moreso by then as we'll be on iOS 11.

Honestly, I think Apple is feeling some pressure now. It was probably too late to adjust this year's plans but we should see better things next year as a result. Plus I think the pressure will get even worse for them when do debut these iphone 6SE's. The dual camera on the Plus (probably the least selling iphone) looks interesting but good luck going another long year with just that. Besides, all the buzz will be criticism over losing the headphone jack for no good reason and cosmetic speaker holes.

Looks like the only worthwhile product coming up will be the MBP but even that remains to be seen.

You will get two kinds of responses to these questions:

1. Those that have made up their mind / can't help themselves in buying the next Apple phone, who will loudly claim OLED is no big deal and they don't understand why anyone would want something like that as a way to mentally justify the choice they are about to make (Ofcourse if Apple does release another phone with OLED next year, the same crowd will gush all over it, and then use this new "revolutionary" technology as an excuse to buy a new phone then!!)

2. Those who want OLED and are willing to wait for such a phone or buy the competition.

OLED has some advantages and some disadvantages. The screen quality is already very good so switching to this is a low priority for me. When they solve the lifetime and fading problems maybe Apple will switch.

I'm more interested in better WiFi connectivity, faster CPU, faster GPS lock, software enhancements.

So your saying the masses are two faced? By making a general statement like that, you get in a dig without the means to prove that statement.

IPS has been great for so many years, it isn't crap all of a sudden. I'd rather stick to Apples ecosystem. If it comes out great, but I don't really care. The thought of having to navigate through crappy Android is enough to put me off irrespective of how better the screen is perceived to be.

Anyone claiming Android is crappy is emotionally invested. There isn't nearly as much a difference between the two as fanatics for both would have you believe.
