At first I found him extremely annoying but he grows on you. I actually know a couple of autistic adults who are very much like him.
Bill Prady acknowledges the trait but he didn't want to turn the light, comedic show into something as serious and debilitating as autism/Asperger's syndrome. I hope people don't find this a way to laugh at mentally disabled people with autism and I would think if the show made fun of Down's Syndrome, there would be an outcry.
DSM considered Asperger's a form of schizophrenia before 1981 and before that Asperger's (specifically) was considered a form of mental retardation. That being said I know people who have both those who actually get by better than a person suffering from autism.
