is Sheldon Cooper the greatest TV character ever?

There are hundreds of TV characters better than anything in the Big Bang Theory, which as a geek & nerd I find incredibly insulting. Same showrunner as two and a half men, need I say more?

Those characters are stereotypical view of what smart people looks like to stupid people. They are so far detached from reality that it's comical, in a bad way. They are today's Steve Urkel.

The BBT characters rank below Joffery Baratheon on my list of favorite TV characters.

Not quite. The highest rated episodes of Big Bang Theory ever garnered 20 million viewers. While it's unquestionably a hugely successful show, this means that there are more than 280 million Americans who AREN'T watching it. Fans of ANY TV show are, by definition, the minority. There is no such thing as a TV show that is watched by most people.

These days you are probably right, but back in the day didn't more people which certain episodes of say Dallas than didn't? Like when JR got shot?
I'd say Game of Thrones must be one of the highest watched shows. But these days with broadcasts, streaming, DVD's etc. it's hard to get a truly acurate figure.

I like the show, I do agree that it has run its course tho. As for best TV character, no.

Jim Parsons is a great actor but the character isn't a great.

My daughter loves the show. But she has Aspergus which is the basic premise of Sheldon's character.

With Hollundeize I hope!

On topic - I tried it multiple times, didn't get it. Partially because of the laughs. I think the only sitcom that I truly enjoyed was Roseanne - especially when Darlene went Vegan/Goth, but otherwise it just ruined (or contributed to that) every single sitcom from Married... to Friends.

Best TV chars: Walter White, Omar Little, Debra Morgan (********* annoying too), SOA's Tig (I feel mixed about the show in general but he pulls of the sarcastic redneck biker in such an amazing way....). Hannibal Lecter - although 2 seasons really aren't enough to say it, I so hope that we will be blessed with an at least 5 season run of this show altogether, it's brilliant and the title character contributes a ton to this.

Omar Little

I know, right? Michael K. Williams is goddam outstanding. Did you watch Boardwalk Empire? Chalky White, another epic character, brought to life by MKW’s performance (and what an exit).

Omar’s comin’ ... !

I liked the early BBT, but its gone to far now.

But to be honest however I answer this is irrelevant as the OP won't check in again! Just for the record, each of his 15 posts has been a new thread.

And 5 are in the wasteland!

Yes, it was better earlier on. I dislike some of the changes made in later seasons.

I hated Boardwalk Empire. I just wasn't able to enjoy the setting and time period at all. I'm sure that it did deserve all of the praise, in this case it was pure personal preferance(ignorance :) ).

...but I also had to think of....

Snoop - The Wire

this is ****ing insane

I quite like The Big Bang Theory and think Sheldon is one of the best characters on it, but no way is he the greatest TV character ever.

Even just thinking in recent times, shows like Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Modern Family, Lost have all had better characters.

he got everything , he is a great character and a great actor.

who agrees with me?

I give him a meh out of ten. I have a friend whose personality is pretty much identical to his so having to actually live with that can be very annoying.

At least big bang theory is moderately amusing unlike my Sheldon like friend.

Parson can act but...

Parson can act and I like the Sheldon character but Big Bang's writing has certainly gone downhill since its early days; it used to be a lot funnier than it is now. If the creative well has gone dry then put it to rest and move on. Please. Move on.

Bbt is cool 30 million like it so ur obviously the minority I find the physics jokes sophisticated and a lot of people won't get it guys are u void of humour altogether bbt is fffffuuuuunnnnyyy man

30 million people are hardly the majority, especially if that country has 300 million citizens and this planet has 237,5 times more people.

Many people still watch Fox News or reality crap or Idol something, doesn't mean its good by an objective measure.

As for the thread starter: http://www.tvforum.co.uk/forums/search/hbk48942

While BBT addresses some of the geek culture I love; Sheldon is such a stereotypical turn off, I quickly stopped watching. The funniest character on that show was Howard's mother (may the actress rest in peace.)

I find his character so unpleasant I have to change the channel when Jim Parsons' Intel commercials are on. :D

After reading this thread I tried to watch that show for the first time.
I made it through about 10 minutes before turning off.
The characters are nerdy, obnoxious, petty weirdos. Intriguing that people find this entertaining.

Now, that's what I'm talking about!! Bravo! :)

I bet Ed O'Neil is extremely grateful for Modern Family, not only for the paycheck, but for something else to hang his professional hat on other than Married With Children, lol. It did not appeal to me, however... I admit to being attracted to Katey Sagal. :)
Married was a great show, it really was ahead of it's time. The writing is amazing, Ed O'Neil is a tremendous character actor.

I'm a huge fan of The Big Bang Theory, and I like it for what it is...silly TV comedy based on geekery. And while I think Jim Parsons does an excellent job with the Sheldon character, and I think Sheldon is a great character (it's gotten stale after 8 years though), I wouldn't say he's the best ever.

Obviously everyone has different tastes in everything. Comedy is easily one of those.

I know a lot of people who think Monty Python is some of the funniest, wittiest comedy out there. Every time I see anything Monty Python, I start looking for stuff to pry out my ear drums so I don't have to hear it any more. Same goes for most British comedy.

A friend of mine who prides herself on never liking anything mainstream and always finding obscure things to enjoy, went off on her rant about Big Bang and told me to instead watch IT Crowd, which she claimed was far superior. It fell flat on me. I don't think I laughed even once.

I was also ragged on by everyone for never having seen The Princess Bride, because it apparently is the funniest/awesomest movie to have ever existed. I barely chuckled throughout it.

Jim Parsons is a cool dude, but Sheldon Cooper is not a good character. Granted he's probably one of the better characters on the show, but the show is not very good to begin with.

Everything is so one dimensional I've seen notebook paper with more personality and development.
