Fun and interesting discussion. Whether it's worth it and has enough value to justify going Hermes or ceramic depends on how much you like ceramic or Hermes. Do you think ceramic is cool? I never heard of Hermes until Apple teamed up with them. And even now I don't feel the Hermes prestige. I guess their marketing hasn't worked on me yet. But I did explore and experiment and recommend that you do the same. Try out one of the "luxury" choices for a year or so, and see how it goes. You got the money as you have sort of told us your money situation. Not taking on one of the "upgrades" and you would be left wondering. The best way to answer your question is to experiment. Sounds like you're seriously leaning the Hermes way. I tried the band with the deployant buckle and thought it was great as it was fast to put on and lengthens the life of the leather. But the deployment has to lay on the bottom of your wrist and that depends on your wrist size. I read others who owned the Hermes got their kicks and decided to just get the steel for their next AW since they really only valued the leather bands and not so much the Hermes faces. In my short time with both the Hermes and the Apple bands, I thought they were both excellent. Hermes had the much prettier buckle and softer leather, but the Apple leather I thought was a good value in comparison. I'm sure there are even better values in 3rd party leather bands, but I stopped my exploration of leather bands as I felt it was too much effort to keep them dry. Btw, AW is essentially my first watch, so I didn't know and was told that leather bands can get smelly after a year or two of wear. So, leather bands only have a life expectancy of a couple of years.

I advocate for just taking the plunge because there always seems to be some surprise and whether it bothers you or not, you can only know by living with it.

Hermes Paris is one of the most famous luxury good manufacturers in the world with almost all of their goods being hand made in France. In my opinion, the Hermes Apple Watch is one of their least exciting products that they offer and I love their watch bands. That just goes to show how high quality and unique their hand made products are. Their leather is best in class (the Birkin bag might be one of the most famous and exclusive bags of all time). They are also very well known for their scarves and their fragrances are great too.

You know, to this day I didn’t realize birkin was made by Hermes. Not a big fan , looks like an oversized grocery bag but they’re exclusive famous and expensive for sure! Every celeb seems to have one.

Hermes scarves. Definitely! Works for guys too

Definitely room for improvement even in the product. Sleep tracking like someone mentioned , battery innovation (would allow it To shed some weight with more efficient power management ), always on display maybe just for time and date not personal info. I read something about smart bands avtually. Move some battery functionality over to the band.

I’d love a slightly less chunky form factor. Contours would be nice so it doesn’t look like a mini tv on the wrist. That’s really about it. And whatever happens , let us use old bands!!!

FaceTime on the wrist is probably inevitable at some point and so is a camera. What use both of them are I’m not sure. Gets silly to replicate everything the iPhone does. And I’d say about 3 generations from now would be a truly independent watch with no need of a tethered phone. Won’t work for me may work for others for just simple calls and text messaging. Like an old Nokia feature phone except this one sits on the wrist and can do a lot more. The phone business will eventually plateau. I mean really what more can you do in terms of functionality and design. They all look like slabs of glass now (we have a notch whoopdedoo) and are pretty overpowered anyway. AR I guess will rise out the next couple of years followed by foldable phones. Thing is every other phone does the same too. The US business may be good because of iOS. Look at China. Everything , I mean everything is done on wechat. Why pay the Apple premium if you’re going to simply use it as a wechat terminal. Buy a oneplus or xiaomi instead. It’s good enough.

Wearables is where the next innovation is coming. Airpods, watch etc.

That’s actually why I really see more and more updates on the watch. That’s tied into the phone. Want an Apple Watch in China ? Better pony up the cash for an iphone, wechat or no wechat. If you’re willing to break away from iOS the iPhone does have plenty of decent competitors. Apple Watch? Maybe I’m biased but nothing really compares. The gear stuff is a joke. Fitbit is a different market.

I’d bet you a buck there’s a whole team at Apple trying to optimize wechat or maybe even working with them directly for the Apple Watch. Once that happens and if it’s exclusive to the watch that’s when China sales go through the roof. That market isn’t about iOS or Android. It’s wechat period.

Now I’m curious if wechat avtually works or has an app for the watch. Need to research this.
How can I tell if an advertised smart watch is actually compatible with Apple products? i"m no expert at these and there are so many choices and details that I can't tell whats compatible or not. Take a look at this because I was thinking about getting it.... mainly for price for it's features. >> https://glohere.godaddysites.com/android-smart-watch I figure if anyone knows about this it would be somebody here. This ad at glohere says that this watch has android AND ios in it. is this even possible? They make a note that some apple features aren't available on the watch. Maybe it's because of this? ANyway, I contacted the folks at Glohere and they say that it supports both operating systems. Could anyone here pleasae explain this to me? I keep finding information that supports both "yes" and "no". Thank you.

That looks like an Android smartwatch claiming to have the kitchen sink (for $25???). They claim it works with the iPhone probably because it connects via Bluetooth, which doesn’t mean much. That website looks scammy and I would avoid. The only devices with iOS and WatchOS are those from Apple. If you want a smartwatch that is seamlessly compatible with iPhone, the Apple Watch is what you want.

Just rest the article above. Gave me a better appreciation of the Hermes watch. Definitely not the same as buying a SS and adding a buckle. It’s the whole experience. Makes me now question my choice of ceramic :) can’t buy both unfortunately but maybe a new Hermés LTE and a used ceramic series 2 just to use as a Notification Center or watch face. They’re both gorgeous. Can’t go wrong with either one.

Hermes owners... what’s your favorite band design to date over the last three years ? Seems like they keep changing them. For this year I like the black tattoo looking strap and the double tour. The others may be a little too plain.

Any of you guys have one iPhone and two watches? How would that work anyway if you want to switch back and forth ? Pretty sure you can’t activate lte on both but what about normal syncing ? One to go out or be dressy, the other more casual and for fitness activities.

You can’t go wrong with the classic Fauve Barenia.

I bought the indigo swift and the Fauve Barenia as an extra band.

Saw Tim Cook wearing the Marina Gala leather (the dark blue tattoo pattern that you mentioned) during his Oxford interview and wish I got that instead of the indigo swift. It stands out instantly. The indigo swift is classy but very subdued.

Also looking at buying the Feu Epsom. Fantastic Hermes orange but in leather!

The tattoo one is very distinctive. I also like the rallye (sorry don’t know the name it’s got holes in it inspired by driving gloves). Cars are my second passion after tech. Well this is strange. I started off without seeing the sense of Hermes. Now I want one in the smaller size so it looks like a nice watch. And will pick up a 42 mm used ceramic at some point for cheap to wear with all my current bands.

OP don’t listen to me in the beginning of the thread. Go for the Hermes. Hahah

Haha that's good to hear - Converting them ceramic Edition owners one at a time!

The one with the holes in it is the Noir Gala Leather single tour Rallye but that only comes in 42mm.

I wanted that one too but my wrist is too small and I don't think that band would take an additional hole as the main big holes go very close to the band holes. I have the 42mm bands and went into a Hermes store and got an additional hole so they would fit better.

You certainly got me. Read my posts from the beginning of this thread. Slow conversion haha. You can see my mind whirring.

That’ll be my next new Apple Watch purchase. Hermes! Think I’ll go with a smaller size for this one though. My current 42 is ok buT I do have skinny wrists. The smaller one may look more classy. Plus more of the band will show and that’s part of the Hermes watch experience. The bands!

Figure ill get the little Hermes with one formal one casual band. At some point I really would love a ceramic. Maybe the “classic” look (if form factor changes next year). I’ll just grab it used and then my current 42mm bands won’t go to waste.

S2 space grey Nike aluminum. It was my first Apple Watch (heck first watch period in a decade). I wanted the cheapest entry point to see if I liked it

I started off with a S0 space grey aluminium and then a S2 Nike. Tried the S3 ceramic and now settled on the S3 Hermes. Honestly it’s the most satisfied I have been with the AW. And my local carrier hasn’t even enabled LTE yet!

Wow what a response to the thread, I thought I was going to get shot down by even suggesting the Edition or Hermes might be a waste of money!

Thank you all for contributing, its been an excellent read.

Yes, I think I'm going to go for the 42mm Fauve Barenia Leather Single tour.

Im not sure the deployment buckle is worth the extra?

The Ebene Barmenia looks nice but is it a little too subdued?

This will be a purchase Ive worked hard for so I plan on wearing it and enjoying it.

Thanks to everyone in this thread I know the Hermes is the right AW for me.

And that's what I would suggest, is always start with the cheapest model to see if you like it first. You have 14 days and all these watches with different casings, do the same thing. It's just a matter of what you prefer and a sense of fashion with choosing the aluminum, stainless and ceramic models.

One thing I wish they did with the Hermes versions is make the body just slightly different. Even if it’s only an orange crown instead of red dot. Would make it that much more special. I’ve been reading a lot about the various Hermes products and there usually is something that lets it stand out a bit more. The Leica camera had a different body etc.

Yes the watch faces are great and sets it apart but that’s software. Who knows if we might one day have a watch face store. And it’s negated by not having an always on display. Human nature here and I’m guilty of it. I know it’s a Hermes , if there was just some small change I could justify it so easily. Right now it’s really the band the engraving on the back and the faces. Pisses me off a wee bit that anyone could buy a baseline SS. Add a band. And voila. A 80% there version of the Hermes. Bet resale values would be higher too if the body stood apart more.

Going to end up getting it anyway. You guys brought me over to the orange side in this thread. Ceramic too probably so in essence. One thread on MR cost me a thousand bucks. Expensive crowd.

Orn
An Hermes orange crown would be amazing!

Or a different size , only sold through Hermes. More curved form factor. Something along that line. The white ceramic can’t be replicated. Visually Hermes can.

Actually even simpler. A software change. Let the Hermes version have an always on display. It’ll make such an impact in making it look like an actual watch.

I really like the Hermes watch faces. If the watch gets an always on display at some point I think I might be tempted.

Its only a waste of money if you don't have enough of said money. And if you do have enough of said money there are worse things you could spend it on. There are also far better things. Like people. Who need food and clothes and a bed for the night.

Deep.

Not really the kind of input I was expecting. Thanks anyway.
