Yes, the diagonal size seems bigger (5.8" vs 5.5"), but looking at the pictures, the iPhone Plus screen is wider. I've been trying to find the screen size (width x height) for both iPhone X and Plus but couldn't find it. Official pages only show width and height of the phone, but not the screen.

Area = width * height

So I'm just trying to see which phone contains more screen real state ignoring the diagonal size.

Any ideas?

Yes, see this thread:

For landscape viewing of photos or movies the image size of the X is between the standard and the plus, but closer to the standard.

I also forgot we need to subtract the notch area from the X model:

Area = width * height - (notch area).

The X is 0.111 sq. in. larger based only on diagonal and aspect ratio. But when you factor in the rounded corners and the notch it will have less. Even more so if you want to watch a video without the notch visible, as it will put large black bars around it to accommodate the notch.

The premium comes from the X having more screen, while maintaining very close to 8 dimensions. Whether that is worth it is up to you, but it is pretty cool how you get 21 hours in a device that small (as opposed to 14 hours), and all the FaceID, etc. etc.

No, in term of surface area X is bigger than Plus. X is taller and Plus is wider.

I calculated my areas form the spec pixel dimensions to get an accurate aspect ratio, then used Pythagoras to calculate the width and height from the quoted diagonals 4.7", 5.5" and 5.8".

Standard: 2.304 x 4.097 = 9.44 sq ins
X: 2.432 x 5.265 = 12.80 sq ins
Plus: 2.69 x 4.783 = 12.86 sq ins

The X has a larger 5.8 inch display vs the 8+ only has 5.5 inch.
The X is physically smaller 5.65 x 2.79 inch vs 6.24 x 3.07 inch.

So, in short, the X is physically smaller than the 8+ in both width and height (and weight) yet still has a larger display. Win win win.

Read the thread I linked in post#4 above to understand why when looking ay photos or movies in landscape mode the image will be smaller.

Haven't used my Pythagoras since high school, you could be right.

That doesn't account for the notch does it?

You are still getting more screen on the iphone x. Just because the base of the phone is bigger doesn't mean it's more screen as it isn't.

I did the same calculations at work using out to 4 decimal places for all numbers during the calculations and the X comes out just a little over 13 sq. in. Also, the X is technically 5.85" according to Apple.
