Not knocking any of it, holding out on upgrades is behavior worth applauding for the wallet and your soul. And respect you respecting gifts!

But how are you a member since 2010 with a 6plus? Is it agonizing being a member on Mac rumors with gadget lust left and right and reading about all the models between now and then? 6s/7/8/x/xs

I ordered the new iPad Pro & Pencil 2 the second the music came on & I still have a 6s. I use the pad way more than I use the phone. I am now thinking if I want to spend the $29 tomorrow to get a new battery, or give in and upgrade.

It’s not how long you’ve been a member, but what you do with your iToys that matters!

The new iPP looks like a great device. I finally upgraded my iPad Air when the 10.5" model was released, thinking that Apple would keep that form factor for a few years. I missed on that prediction.

My gadget lust may be high - but the money is low!

I was close to buying an X last year. But I didn’t like the screen size. Felt smaller then my plus since it was considerably narrower to me. So I passed.

Stuff now is just so good that it lasts so long and continues to works great. As I’ve gotten older I’ve moved past needing the latest and greatest. I went from an original iPad to a...3? Then an air. Now a 10.5. I’ll have it for a looong time.

I’d rather spend money on home projects. Or taking my kids on vacations. Priorities just change a bit.

She offered to get me a Max. But I couldn’t justify an extra $450 for a slightly bigger screen. My vision isn’t good enough to even notice a diff on screens between an Xr and a Max. And the Xr is a huge upgrade.

I’m happy with it.
A big AMEN to you, my (hope I'm assuming correctly) middle aged brother! I'm in the exact same boat as you, I want to save money now to spend on home/family/kids. I'm so tempted to finally upgrade my iPhone 6 to an Xr, Lord knows I've spent too much time recently reading about it, but still vacillating on whether it will be worth it, because aside from the 1GB hiccups of the 6, in all honesty, it still works ok. I'm a huge tech geek and my wife wants to get me an Xr too but part of me just doesn't want to spend the money. Help convince me to get it!

Had the same thoughs with my 6 when the iPhone X comes out last year. Postponed buying it to this year and are happy that a mainstream iPhone was released with the X technology. The 6 was becoming very slow with its 1 GB of RAM...

Of course it’s a good upgrade. It’s 4 years younger so will be vastly different in both performance and features. Even an iPhone 8 is worlds different to the 6.

The iPhone 8 looks very old now after the 3 new FaceTime iPhones.....

This seems to be an excellent upgrade over the 6. Just be aware that it's a bigger phone, especially so in a case. I think it will last you another five years. Of course, if the 6 is doing all you need, in 11 or 12 months Apple will either upgrade the XR or come out with something else. You won't make a bad choice regardless.

For those of you who have the XR, does it have decent cell/wifi reception? I've heard that could be an issue with some of the new iPhones?

I posted in another thread that I have an iPhone 6 currently and am looking to upgrade. At the time I was looking at the XS, but now I'm thinking about the XR.

Do you think the XR would be a good upgrade from the 6 I currently have?
It's a nice upgrade from a 6S+ so far after 1 week.

No with the XR but with XS/Max according to poste elsewhere on this site.

I had a 6 since it launched 4 years ago.

Tried a XS Max for 2 weeks, it had issues (PWM and color shift on the OLED, reception wasn’t great, battery life lower than expected) so that was returned.

Got a XR and retired the trusty 6 forever. It’s a great phone overall. The only thing I’d keep in mind is it’s bigger and heavier than the 6. I wanted a bigger screen, so I was ready to put up with the size.

I was at Costco today and saw the XS and Max prominently displayed. I set my XR to the Max’s display settings and compared several screens side by side. I walked away very satisfied with not having spent the extra to buy one of the premium models.

I did the same at the Apple store and there was not an in your face difference in the screens. The extra lens and 3D Touch on the XS and Max are unimportant to me.

I finally saw an Xr in person today and I’d have to agree with your screen assessment. The Xr screen is noticeably more clear and vivid than the 8. I could immediately tell the difference between the 8 and Xs screen but it was harder to tell a difference between the Xr and Xs. I then compared the Xr to 8 and the 8 just looked more “dull” for the lack of better wording. It’s as if the Xr has an extra coating on its LCD to make colors and picture quality “smoother”, kind of like how glossy computer monitors do, but without the excessive reflection of a glossy coating. No doubt the Xs screen pops more than either Xr and 8, and yes it is immediately noticeable, but after seeing the Xr in person, I can honestly say it’s negligible. I do recognize that this was in the brightly lit Apple store so black levels didn’t really show, so I admit it may be a bigger difference in a dimly lit setting.

As for the size difference between 6 and Xr, no doubt, Xr is pretty big compared, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much one handed stuff I could do with the Xr. I think it is mostly due to the swipe up for home vs the button on the 6. If there was a home button on the Xr, I think I’d have more problems with one handed operation. I also got a chance to compare one hand operation of the Xr to Xs. I will admit, the Xs felt more secure in my hand, due to its smaller form factor, but I could do almost everything on the Xr that I could do on the Xs. The only notable thing I couldn’t do on the Xr that I could on the Xs one handed-wise was reach the lower right corner without feeling like I’d drop the phone (I use my left hand mostly for one hand use).

I’m sold on upgrading to the Xr instead of the Xs from my 6... just as soon as I save a couple more hundred bucks!

Thanks for sharing your observations. FWIW, one of the first things I noticed after setting up my XR was the deeper colors of the iOS and particularly Android texting bubbles. I know that may seem silly, but it shows that there’s a little something extra that Apple did with the display.

I think you’ll like owning the XR. You know it’s going to be a bigger phone that your six, but i wanted a larger screen. I often use it two-handed and was prepared for that from the beginning. And a case will grow the phone some, but I’m not going have one without a case.

It’s a fine phone, @pdp1. It’s Apple’s current “Best Buy.” Maybe Consumer Reports will so designate it as such when et evaluates the Regulal phone for the Rest of us.

I personally wouldn’t, unless you want a giant phablet constantly in your trouser pockets, which is very uncomfortable, not to mention incredibly awkward and inconvenient to use.

On that basis I’d either keep the 6 or pony up for the XS (or get the standard 4.7 inch 6S, 7 or 8 or the first X)

Cracks me up when people call the XR a giant phablet. I honestly don’t know why people consider this to be such a big phone. I’m small with small hands and it’s just not that big.

I've heard some say video quality isn't great on the XR. How does, say, the Youtube app look on it?

YouTube looks fine to me, but take my opinion with a grain of salt because watching video on my phone is a low priority for me.

That all depends on the quality of the video playing. And I’m not only talking about video resolution because a crappy quality 1080p video can look worse than a good quality 480p video. I don’t think you’re asking the right question and would completely ignore generic comments like “video quality sucks on the Xr”

Now if you’re talking about a good quality 1080p, 720p, or even 480p video, it will look great on the Xr.

I'm not super tech savvy so I was a little concerned that some people are saying the XR screen is garbage compared to the XS.

Maybe I am just looking for validation for a purchase I'm about to make, but for those of you with the XR, does the screen look good to you?

Again, generic, hyperbolic comments like “Xr screen is garbage compared to Xs” should be completely ignored. If you aren’t tech savvy as you put it, I doubt you’ll find the Xr display lacking in any way, especially YouTube videos. I saw an Xr in person at the store and think the screen is really nice, go see it in person to be sure!
