Again, generic, hyperbolic comments like “Xr screen is garbage compared to Xs” should be completely ignored. If you aren’t tech savvy as you put it, I doubt you’ll find the Xr display lacking in any way, especially YouTube videos. I saw an Xr in person at the store and think the screen is really nice, go see it in person to be sure!

Bottom line: you like the XR I take it?

I just looked at both at a Walmart today. I held them both at about a normal viewing distance (I didn't touch them to my face in other words). Honestly, I don't remember noticing a difference.

Yes, I’m planning to get an Xr in the near future. I do think the Xs is a nice phone and it has several advantages over the Xr, but none of the advantages are valuable enough, to me, to warrant the $250, or more, premium. The only thing that almost swayed me to get the Xs instead was the size, I really like the size of the Xs... but since there are also screen real estate benefits of the 6.1” screen over a 5.8” screen, I eventually went for the Xr.

Since apparent screen quality seems to be a decision factor for you, and you just said you don’t remember seeing a huge difference between the Xr and Xs screen, I don’t see why you wouldn’t get the Xr and save yourself a few bucks, unless you have other concerns?

My main gripe with the XR/Max is the size. Make a XR Mini around 5.3” and I will upgrade my X to it.

As you know, it's easy to get full of concern reading several of the posts on the MR forums. If a person doesn't feel well versed in gadgetry :), it's easy to think that those who speak with great confidence must be. One has to have a good sifter when reading forums, but in the final analysis we must make our decisions upon what we see with our own eyes, whether those eyes be metaphorical or physical.

When a forum member says the screen quality of the XR is crappy or disgusting or something similar, I dismiss anything else that poster says. He or she simply doesn't know what he or she is talking about.

I went from a 7 to the XR, and I'll sum up my thoughts:

- Battery life actually is great
- Face ID is Face ID, it's fast, you get used to it quickly
- Phone feels faster as it should, but not leaps and bounds (IMO)
- Camera is not as big of an upgrade (IMO)
- Display is a step up over the 7. I did notice the difference compared to the XS and XS Max, but I honestly don't mind.

Overall, if you're wanting to upgrade to the XR, it's a big yes from me. Otherwise if you're not locked into the Apple ecosystem, I would say there is better value elsewhere give it's price. I guess that's my biggest gripe, It was $1400NZD for the base model in black, it's a tough pill to swallow when the competition is strong.

How is cell reception? Also, does the XR drop calls a lot? On another thread here people are saying that's an issue with the XR.

The only place I noticed I have weaker reception compared to my 7 is at home, however this doesn't affect calls. And in saying that, I've had no issues with calling *touch wood*

I went from 6S, to a XS, and then to the XR. I bought the XS when it first came out and found the screen to be too yellow, and this was with Truetone turned off. Compared to the 6S screen it was very noticeable. Photos and video I was used to viewing on the 6S were just way off color on the XS. Also, I began to suffer from eye strain and my eyes would water in extreme cases.

When the XR came out I was thinking to see if that would be any better. I wanted to change to the X design, after using the 6S for so long, so the iPhone8 was not a consideration. It took me a while to consider the XR because I was unable to return the XS so I would have to sell it and take a huge financial hit.

However after seeing this excellent post from @PBz showing the color shift difference between the XS and XR, convinced me to buy the XR.

After having the XR for about a nearly a week I am very happy with it. No more eye strain. Photos and videos are displaying at the same colors as the 6S. Screen clarity is just like the 6S but with more viewing area than before. The size is a little big but I'm already used to it now. Some adjustments needed to my habit of using one hand on the 6S.

I sold the XS, and took a $250 hit. Almost made me cry but the XR has met my expectations and I think its a worthy upgrade from the 6S.

Since it's been out for a while now, for those of you who have the XR: How's the reception on the XR? Also, have you had issues with failed/dropped calls?

No issues with calling with my XR. Reception seems to be just as good as my old 7 and 4G/LTE speeds are on par. I'm based in New Zealand too if that helps.

My 2¢ : I just got the XR ( through Verizon ) and, coming from the 6, I'd say I made the right choice. While my 6 was fine for quite some time lately the battery life has been terrible. Could not by any means last a day. Browsing Flipboard for even 5 minutes would drain the battery drastically. By comparison the XR was charged to 100% today from 4 am and now sits at 68% (it's 6:41 pm as I type this) with fairly frequent use. It's new to me after all and I am using it frequently.

So, long story short yes: definitely a good upgrade coming from an iPhone 6. No regrets whatsoever.

I am very interested in why OLED screens are causing this. Do Samsung displays not have this problem? OLED has been out for a while.

Hihi, came from an iPhone 7 plus to a XR, been using for about a month. So far no drop calls at all. Reception is noticeably better than on the 7 Plus. I use to get poor reception in my room on the 7 plus so sometimes calls would drop when I am walking between the hall and my room but so far with the iPhone XR I have not been able to replicate this issue.

If you are coming from an iPhone 6, it’s going to be a really awesome upgrade. Only thing is getting use to the gesture base navigation, the fact that there is no bottom and top chin to hold onto while using the device and of course the size of the device. It took me about a week to get use to the above mention differences, after that it’s been plain sailing.

PWM can happen across any OLED display and yes, there are some who suffer the same affects with Samsung phones. If you didn’t know, Apple uses Samsung’s OLED panels, so in theory, there be no reason to believe why someone wouldn’t have similar experiences with a Samsung phone.

I’ve had an XR since launch day. I also work in an area of poor reception. The reception has been fine, just as good if not slightly better than my old iPhone 7. No issues with failed/dropped calls. I can’t see any issues.

Had the same experience coming from my 6. The battery life with the XR is awesome and the biggest plus for this phone. I charge mine mostly only every two days and even then there is much power left. That should also save lots of charging cycles and give me a longer lasting battery.

Because of this I tolerate the much bigger and thicker phone and try to get used to it....

imo $200 and $250 for 6s/6s plus direct trade in for XS/XR is a great deal! $100 bump for them and 6 users:
$150 / $200 from 6 and 6plus.

I got $285 for my 128G 7+ around XR launch, and though I felt a bit ripped I valued the convenience and wanted teh XR, and a trade in was the only way I could justify upgrading

im tempted to trade in my X on the sooner side and be done with it, too. $500 for a subsidized contract X 64g.

iPhone used market prices are dropping. People value them more than it’s worth. I’m having a hard time selling my mint condition unlocked 7+ 128gb with brand new accessories and box in the used market for $350

I’d say getting $285 for the convenience is fair.

I posted in another thread that I have an iPhone 6 currently and am looking to upgrade. At the time I was looking at the XS, but now I'm thinking about the XR.

Do you think the XR would be a good upgrade from the 6 I currently have?

Depends on your overall budget.

If you have a tight budget, Even iPhone 7 is a good phone enough it is still fast and has HEVC encoding, water resistant unlike older phones including 6S/6 and below aren’t. iPhone 7 for sure would support at least iOS 15 until 2021 and that is 3 years from now (considering that iPhone 5s is the oldest supported at the moment)

The XR from iPhone 6 there is a huge speed bump, the XR itself can support maybe until iOS 18
