I just chatted with an Apple rep, asking if I can travel out side the U.S. with my contract-free T-Mobile iPhone 6 right away, or have to wait the 40 days for T-Mobile to unlock it.

I emphasized that I was buying it from Apple, and that T-Mobile told me the iPhone 6 bought from Apple would be unlocked for international sims right away, while theirs would require 40 day wait.

Fred Astaire would have been proud of the song and dance the Apple rep gave to avoid giving me a straight answer.

My next question was going to be, "How can the iPhone 6 distinguish between an international sim and an AT&T sim."

However, I never got an admission that it would be unlocked for international sims, so I never got to ask that question.

My conclusion: UNLOCKED!!!!!

I also talked with them. They seemed pretty confused themselves but at one point they said that t-mobile allows their phones to be used both nationally and internationally. So it probably means that it would be unlocked and can be used with other carriers out of USA too.

Comcast bills....they are the worst.

From my experience, here is what I know:

Verizon iphones are unlocked, period. Last year I bought my 5s from verizon, and have since then used it on att and tmobile.

Att will unlock your phone if you have paid it off (not sure how long you need to use it with them first, probably 30-40 days). This was verified with my current phone, an lg g3, that i am now using on tmobile.

A tmobile iphone purchased from tmobile is locked. Why? Because they have the jump plan, where you pay monthly until you pay the phone off. Once you have paid the phone off, assuming you have used it on tmobile for a minimum of 40 days, they will unlock it. Period. So if you buy an iphone from tmobile on launch day...you need to have a tmobile account.

If you buy a tmobile iphone from apple, it is unlocked. It will work on tmobile, att, and other smaller carriers. It will NOT work on verizon or sprint. Why? Because verizon and sprint have a ridiculous policy where the phones you use have to have been purchased from, or designated for their network.

Ok so here's my question. I was going to get a t-mobile phone contract free from apple and use it with ATT. But since Verizon phones will work with ATT as well is it worth adding a new line to my wife's Verizon account, and then immediately paying the ETF? I'm looking at the 64GB 6+ which would be $849 unlocked, but if subsidized on verizon it's $399 + $350 ETF+ 1 month of service (approx $50 after taxes/fees), it's still cheaper?!! What am I missing?

If you travel out of the country you can use "local" (cheap) SIMS
Use it on smaller prepaid GSM carriers (or ones that don't sell iPhones)
Higher resale value.
You can change carrier at your whim (especially since contracts seem to be disappearing)

But you cant go to Verizon or Sprint right?

I was on the phone with Verizon this morning (my carrier) - and they said indeed the "verizon" iphones are unlocked - but they made the point that they will work on other carriers ONLY OUTSIDE the US.
Is this a load of crap?
Why would that be?

I am going to Pre-order a 64GB 6+ tonight unlocked t mobile, and if i don't like it i have 14 days or INCASE it is actually locked i can just send it back threw the mail. Either way i get to atleast play around with it without leaving my house to go to the apple store.

ONE IMPORTANT QUESTION THOUGH, is it 14 days from pre-order or when it ships? Anyone know?

From Apple website: "You have 14 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it."

Why doesn't the apple store mobile app give us the option to preorder a tmobile device like the site does?

Good question! well see how it goes, i plan on ordering a t mobile one as well unlocked, well see how it goes, probably will crash.

Can someone please give me their opinion?
I am on Verizon and am considering buying the T-mobile phone tonight and going with them and leaving verizon.

A lot of you are talking about buying the T mobile phone but it doesnt sound like you want to use it with T-Mobile.

The plan info they gave me sounded pretty good compared to what Ive had with Verizon.
So what is it you people dont like about T mobile?

Im just wondering why so many want to buy the new T-mobile phone (lets just say it IS unlocked - which it may not be) and so many want to NOT use it with T-mobile - which I assume by all the questions as to if its locked to them or not.
So why does no one want to use it with T-mobile? They are looking attractive to me.

Maybe someone here knows... I want to wait for the first ones to get their "unlocked" iPhone.. If I order it one week from now, will it be sent to me by October 15? I'm asking because I'm gonna be at the US for a short while.

Hey bud, if you're willing to wait til 10/15, you may as well wait to buy it in the store. You'll be able to hear from others by then and buy your phone much sooner.

People who want the unlocked T-Mobile version are most likely not due for an upgrade and would have to extend their contracts to upgrade. So they want to pay full price and swap in their AT&T SIM. Or, they travel internationally and want a phone they can use with a local SIM when they travel. Or, they're from another country and want to buy the unlocked T-Mobile phone to use in their country.

I am on T-Mobile and I am very happy with them. I live in NYC and get great LTE coverage. The only time I get poor coverage is when I visit family who live in the middle of no where Virginia. They live near the woods and I drop down to Edge.

Why can't Apple just end the confusion and sell a stinking unlocked phone to begin with?

5 options:

AT&T
Sprint
Verizon
T-Mobile
Unlocked - no sim/carrier contract

I'd love to use T-Mobile, but where I live I can only get 2G. With AT&T I get LTE speeds.

Just got of the phone with Apple. The girl said I Apple has not even announced their pre-order time. She said T-Mobile iPhone 6 can only be used with T-Mobile. ?????

Maybe I'm being picky, but just because they list the price as "Unlocked" doesn't mean the TMo one actually is unlocked.
ABSOLUTELY. There's just a lot of "speculative" answers here to that question of how to buy an unlocked iPhone 6 tomorrow.
I have been scouring the net and cannot find any definitive answer.

They say this every year and it's not true.

No contract T-Mobile iPhones purchased directly from Apple are unlocked. Always have been since they first started selling them.

Purchased directed from T-Mobile full priced they are locked.

Many, like me, want the unlocked model because they either travel or live in another country and want to use it on the GSM systems available in THEIR country.
I have done this with my two previous iPhones, and have always been able to buy UNLOCKED directly from Apple and have never had a problem making it work where I live (Mexico).
.
So to answer your question: YES, "... many want to NOT use it with T-Mobile".

“The T-Mobile iPhone is contract-free and can be used with the GSM carrier of your choice internationally, but comes preconfigured for use with T-Mobile and needs to be activated with T-Mobile in the United States,” an Apple retail support representative wrote. “To use the iPhone with another carrier in the United States, you will want to contact T-Mobile for your available options or wait for the unlocked version of the iPhone to be released.”

"an Apple retail support representative wrote". In other words, the same online chat the rest of us have been having.

Because corporations have a LOT of power in this country. We all gave them that power.
To me it is crazy that phone companies were EVER allowed to lock out someone else's technology in order for any of us to use it. They should have never had that power to begin with.
Tech/media developers and companies are always 2 steps forward, one back.

Ive been so overcharged for data when I go to CAnada on Verizon. I pay a high price to have a phone and text plan that INCLUDES canada.

T-mobile told me if I am on their 60 dollar plan - I can call and text to and from Canada and get unlimited data there for no additional costs.
So there would be no reason to get any local plan in THAT country with a different sim.

Sounds too good to be true and I get so much bad info I dont know what to believe.
