Because corporations have a LOT of power in this country. We all gave them that power.
To me it is crazy that phone companies were EVER allowed to lock out someone else's technology in order for any of us to use it. They should have never had that power to begin with.
Tech/media developers and companies are always 2 steps forward, one back.

Ive been so overcharged for data when I go to CAnada on Verizon. I pay a high price to have a phone and text plan that INCLUDES canada.

T-mobile told me if I am on their 60 dollar plan - I can call and text to and from Canada and get unlimited data there for no additional costs.
So there would be no reason to get any local plan in THAT country with a different sim.

Sounds too good to be true and I get so much bad info I dont know what to believe.

T-Mobile offers a test drive. Get an iPhone 5s and test it to make sure you get good coverage in your area.

Chiming in - AT&T 5S $849 was unlocked

Last year's 5S launch day, I purchased an AT&T 5S gold 64gb at Apple Retail Store for full price $849, and it was unlocked. Just need to plug it into iTunes, and it said Congratulations, iPhone is unlocked.

Does anyone know if Apple Online Preorder limits number of iPhone 6 pre-orders?

sigh - more calling just gets me more confused.
So I was just on the phone for a while with a verizon rep - handling some stuff for MY account - and I started asking him all this stuff being discussed here.
He went and "did research" to make sure - but he came back and said if my wife in CAnada bought an UNLOCKED phone in Canada - they would DEFINITELY accept it on the Verizon network. He said you dont have to buy a Verizon phone just to use a phone on Verizon. He said the iphone unlocked bought anywhere would be usable on Verizon. He said people come to Verizon from other networks and they bring their phones - so this goes against MUCH of what is said here. He said CDMA/GSM activation stuff just has to do with international use and as long as its the iphone - there is no issue - any unlocked iphone will work on Verizon if brought to it.
He said by law they have to accept unlocked phones.

Jesus I have never felt so confused as to what is right and what isnt when buying a product.

Chatted with an Atnt Rep. they said thy are gonna have off contract phones for atnt on their website once the pre-order starts. And then u can have it unlocked later.

Hope this helps

Can you return online phone order to an Apple Store?

I dont think so just print a return label and send it on its way much easier! :)

What do you mean by this? Unlocked later?

I would rather take it to a store if I don't like the big iphone. Wouldn't they charge to ship it back?

No they send you a pre-paid label to print, and you take it to fedex to drop off, you get a receipt and all done. :apple:

IF and its a big IF the T-Mobile is not unlocked when i get it, thats what ill be doing so no worries on getting stuck with the phone.

From the Apple website "An iPhone purchased on the Apple Online Store is ineligible for return to an Apple Retail Store."

Correct, print the free pre-paid label, and you take it to fedex to drop off, you get a receipt and all done. Easy.:apple:

And further - for what its worth (if anything) - I was now just online with T Mobile and they said the iphone 6 on the apple store is locked to them for 40 days. Then you can ask for it to be unlocked.
I guess well all just see what happens - but for me - T Mobile is looking WAY better than my Verizon even though I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan.
Im trying to figure out what the catch is with T Mobile - cause so far they seem great compared to what I have.

I heard the same.

Meaning you will get a full price phone locked to AT&T, and then request an unlock from them. Only really helps people who have AT&T no-contract plans (since you can't buy a full price AT&T phone from Apple).

Just spoke with Apple Store Chat support, and he confirmed for me that there are no actual unlocked iPhone 6 announced for the US at this time anyway, so would definitely have to go the route of purchasing the phone, then having the carrier unlock it.

But you cant go to Verizon or Sprint right?

I was on the phone with Verizon this morning (my carrier) - and they said indeed the "verizon" iphones are unlocked - but they made the point that they will work on other carriers ONLY OUTSIDE the US.
Is this a load of crap?
Why would that be?

Yes, a load of crap. My VERIZON iPhone 5S has been on AT&T since the first minute I purchased it. I've never used Verizon in my life for cellular service.

No, the Verizon iPhone will not work on Sprint or any other CDMA carrier than Verizon.

Disclaimer: the above pertains to the iPhone 5S, while I highly doubt it has changed no one has tried since the 6 hasn't been released.

Wrong .. but I'm tired of typing (and reading other replies) answering the same question over and over.

That's new because I returned 2 online purchased iPhones to Apple stores without any issue last year. I guess they changed it this year.

----------

They say this every year and it's not true.

No contract T-Mobile iPhones purchased directly from Apple are unlocked. Always have been since they first started selling them.

Purchased directed from T-Mobile full priced they are locked.

While this is probably still true, NO ONE KNOWS FOR SURE until AT LEAST ONE PERSON gets one. It is possible they have changed things this year. Maybe T-Mobile complained too many of their phones weren't going on their service.

Hey TB07-NJ, like I said, got this from Apple Store Chat Support just minutes ago, not trying to start an argument, just presenting what I was told. So, sorry you are tired of typing replies, but this is what I was told very specifically by Apple. The phones may in fact be unlocked or unlockable from launch, but the official word is no unlocked phones at launch.

Yes, and that was the same official word last year (that turned out to be incorrect).

Hey bud, if you're willing to wait til 10/15, you may as well wait to buy it in the store. You'll be able to hear from others by then and buy your phone much sooner.

Not true. It is unlocked.

They probably were unlocked like last year until everyone started calling in about it so they decided to lock them.

Apple store "chat people" are trained to read from scripts. Half of them are brand new for the new release and just regurgitate what they see on their papers or on their website. The MUST follow the company policy line or be fired.

When I bought my Verizon iPhone 5S last year on release day I was told by the "genius" (lower case) "no way it will work on AT&T." When the sales drone handed me the phone I immediately took my AT&T iPhone 5 out of my pocket, put the sim in the VERIZON iPhone 5S I just paid full price for and it worked just fine right out of the box on AT&T.

The "genius" (lower case) smiled, winked, and walked away. He knew damned well it would work but simply wasn't permitted to say so.

This story has been repeated ad nauseum last year and the same thing will be repeated again this year.

The "chat people" DO NOT HAVE A CLUE both due to lack of knowledge and lack of ability to say something other than what they are told to say or risk their jobs.

I was a call center training manager for a major satellite TV company for 5 years and they all work the same.

T-Mobile is now confirming, no contract iPhone 6's purchased from Apple are unlocked.

Hopefully everyone who is saying it's unlocked is right.

Where you get this info?

----------

If I buy for pre-order choosing pick up is guaranteed get it in Retail store?

Do I need take line or go directly to upfront?

Sorry by my poor English, but it is my first pre-order.

The only issue though is that both original inquiries were based upon international use. However if you look at the first post. The OP's latest question is

"so the iPhone 6 without contract from the Apple store - that says t-mobile will be unlocked??"

and the direct response to that is

"If you purchase the device through the Apple Store, it should be unlocked. *JM"

If you pre-order with the pick up at store option, you will get some sort of appointment or like that. There will to two lines on the launch day, one for regular buying and another for pre-ordered pick up ones. You might still have to be on line for a while at the store depending on how many people will order with pick-up option but at least getting the phone is guaranteed.

Ok so I know from experience that the Verizon iphone will work on tmo and att but apparently this year the gsm and cdma have the same model numbers and antennas. Is there anything definitive suggesting that this year an unlocked tmo phone may work on vzw?

Please do not respond to this with what a customer service rep said. They are either purposefully lying or clueless and the collective experience of people who have actually gone through the process for years now is much more valuable.

Thanks.
