Solution:

1. Buy the T-mobile version from apple.com.
2. Try activating with your ATT SIM.
3. If it works, keep it.
4. If it doesn't return it.

I am planning to do the same if att does not offer contract free phone by the pre-order launch time.
At the worst, I will be mailing back the phone to Apple at no cost. So nothing to lose but worth the try for getting unlocked phone.

If you pre-order with the pick up at store option, you will get some sort of appointment or like that. There will to two lines on the launch day, one for regular buying and another for pre-ordered pick up ones. You might still have to be on line for a while at the store depending on how many people will order with pick-up option but at least getting the phone is guaranteed.

Thks Arken! ;)

Somebody here from Orlando?

Because I will arrive in Orlando september 19 and like to know which mall is better (emptier) to pick up the iPhone.

Direct from Apple chat

Both Apple chat and T-mobile are saying the T-mobile phone is unlocked.
T-mobile's twitter is saying the T-mobile phone (AT THE APPLE STORE) is unlocked. See here: via benizzled: https://twitter.com/TMobileHelp/status/510174691655712768
IF you buy from T-mobile, you will get a locked phone.

I called AT&T, they said the phones are identical, if I pop my SIM card into it, it will work.

But if we choose the T-Mobile option on Apple's website, will it force us to choose a plan? I have AT&T, so I guess if it works with my AT&T SIM card I can just cancel the T-Mobile plan?

Will iPhone 6 accept iPhone 4s's sim card? If it doesn't, how do I do the test above?

iPhone 4s has a microSIM, iPhones after iPhone 5 use the NanoSIM (smaller card)

Do you have a friend with an iphone 5 or newer that you could pop their sim in to try it out? Otherwise you'd have to cut the card down. As for getting it back into your 4s, they make nanoSIM to microSIM adapters:

Forgive me if this was answered prior, but I have an unlimited Verizon plan: would the off-contract T-Mobile phone work for me? I have a 5s and I am assuming the SIM can be popped out and placed in the 6. Is this right?

No they send you a pre-paid label to print, and you take it to fedex to drop off, you get a receipt and all done.

IF and its a big IF the T-Mobile is not unlocked when i get it, thats what ill be doing so no worries on getting stuck with the phone.

Correct, print the free pre-paid label, and you take it to fedex to drop off, you get a receipt and all done. Easy.

Can I pre order and pick it up at the store, and if it turns out to be locked , can i still send it back via Fedex?

The Tmobile one doesn't even show up in the Apple Store App. Just in the web store. why? Thought it would be easier to use the app.

Why doesn't the apple store mobile app give us the option to preorder a tmobile device like the site does?

I was wondering the same thing. My experience has been that the purchase goes so much smoother using the Apple Store app but I can't figure out why the contract free/unlocked T-Mo phone doesn't show up op with pricing.

No just return it back to the store the same day you pick it up. :D

"If you purchase the "Contract Free" T-Mobile version from the Apple website it will also be locked to our network and the same requirements must be met before we can unlock it. The difference is, if you purchase the device from our site you can opt to pay for the phone in monthly installments if you have a qualifying account with us rather than paying the full retail price up front on the Apple site. *CL "

The app states ordering restrictions at the bottom and tells users to use the full site.

Ok so I know from experience that the Verizon iphone will work on tmo and att but apparently this year the gsm and cdma have the same model numbers and antennas. Is there anything definitive suggesting that this year an unlocked tmo phone may work on vzw?

Please do not respond to this with what a customer service rep said. They are either purposefully lying or clueless and the collective experience of people who have actually gone through the process for years now is much more valuable.

Thanks.

The model for GSM and CDMA iPhone 5s in the US are both A1533.

Wow.... Complete Backtrack

To avoid the risk of buying the full price T-Mobile device and it not be unlocked. I'll pre-order the AT&T version and submit an unlock request. No reason why it shouldn't go through.

There's no option to buy AT&T version full price online. That's why so many people are interested in the T-Mobile version.

gotta love in the usa you can just buy the phone unlocked without having to deal with the ********.

So since I'm not eligible for the 2 year pricing or an early upgrade, shouldn't the price default to full price once I put my AT&T info into the site? Or does it not work that way?
