sure, remove the superdrive.

no seriously. If you don't use it, take it out. it won't change anything aesthetically and will shave a meaningful amount of weight off the top. maybe 0.6lbs or so.

i own the early 2009 17", i changed the HDD to SSD and removed the Optical Drive, i would say it's not noticeable lighter, so i put the Optical Drive back and just live with it.

I won one of these and it is a beast. Best thing is to ignore it.

Also, if you can avoid it, don't travel by plane with it. You will regret it.

Trust me. Even a 15" is annoying as heck.

Get an iPad 2 for travel (BTW, these things are SMOKING). :D

You could take off the screen. Something that i've noticed is that my movie files particularly weigh a ton. :) If you get rid of some of your movie and music files, this should go swimmingly for you.

I believe this is an air, but it should still shed some weight. or just add more balloons :apple:

This thread reminds me of college...tons and tons of people that bought 17-inch laptops, even after my warnings about weight, and never took them anywhere. Everybody thinks "what's another 2-3 pounds to carry around? No big deal!" But then they try it for a week, and the realization sets in.

That's right. If you miscalculate the weight/time of travel, ratio your in trouble. They are great for desktop replacements.

A good use is from the office-to-home daily, (but only if your driving, and your office is on a lower floor). :D

This is of course, assuming your in the US. Europe has less elevators ;)

I thought everybody knew about the MacBook beaver?!

If you leave your MB on during the night the warm glow attracts the MacBook beaver. He gently unscrews the casing and craps inside then puts it back together and slinks off into the night. This is why its getting heavier. You need to purge the beaver crap by running it under cold water and then disinfect the logicboard with bleach until the beavers scent is totally gone.

the. best. post. EVER.

i'm literally in tears!

Wow, seriously?

You're all a bunch of jerks, you've listed all but the simplest solution...

Get the Lighter App from the App store, or if you want to go super
light, go with Crazy Lighter - Gold.

I got the Gold version, now I have to put bean bags on top of my MacBook pro to keep it from floating away. If I don't put the bean bags, I get woken in the middle of the night by my MacBook hitting me in the face repeatedly, kind of like a mosquito buzzing around - very annoying.

Hope this helps!

Hello. I love this laptop and the resolution is good for my work. However, I feel that it is getting heavier than before for unknown reason. Is there a way to reduce its weigh? I have an internal 500GB HD. Not sure if going for SSD of similar size would reduce the overall weight to a noticeable level.

Just zip it up when not in use

17" MBP weights the same as many 15" PC laptops.

I move my 17" MBP every day. Sometimes holding on one hand and typing with the other when standing. Someone needs to work out.

When you say holding on one hand.... you are talking about the MBP right?

I got the 17" for the screen size knowing that it was a bit heavier. If I was hauling it around everyday I would have got one of the Air's. Get a backpack, it's easier to carry than a messenger bag or briefcase bag.

17" MBP.

Before iPhone age, I used to have browser with driving directions and screenshots of maps on a 17" PowerBook G4. I use my right hand to hold Powerbook. Drive with left hand.

Srsly??? I have the 2010 17" with a speck hardshell and keyboard cover, and I still think it's light as a feather. I must be hercules.

I just switched from a 6 yr old 11+ lb Dell to this thin, sexy 17" MBP. ITS 7 LBS. 7 LBS!!! Unless youre incredibly scrawny and weight 110 lbs, how can you complain about the weight of this thing? I carry mine back and forth to work (in a backpack). Its a 74 block walk to there and back home. Its like day and night compared to my last notebook.

I hike sometimes 10 miles at a time with a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod and Canon 1Ds in one hand, and that set up is like 15 lbs total. Just cracks me up when people cry about the 15" being too heavy. If it is too heavy, buy a backpack or Timbuk2 bag to transport it in. If that is too heavy...
