Nitwit?!? I like that, that's a good ole word like lolly-gagging. :D

But anyways, why are so many people complaining "is that the best Apple can do"??

You have no clue what the tech specs are on this phone. Just because they use [practically] the same case/screen doesn't mean things have not changed underneath. There are reports the processor is 100% faster, 2x the ram that is rumored to be DDR2 instead of DDR1. What did you expect more?

By the way, if you don't like it, don't buy it. So many people on here are all about writing Apple and petitions. The only way to get your message across is by not buying the phone, money talks.

I think its a decent upgrade, but overall im not that impressed.

I give Apple credit for the RAM (assuming this is true). The processor should be faster after 2 years on the market and the flash memory chips get cheaper therefor Apple can double the size (iPhone and Touch generally see this). Does Apple really deserve a lot of credit for those two changes? In my opinion, the 3G was released mainly to strengthen Apple's GM's and as a shareholder I was pleased with this.

I would have preferred an updated screen with better contrast and resolution and stereo speakers. A slightly redesigned case would have been nice as well because the iPhone is too slippery. I would think Apple could have implemented these changes to address the minor short comings of the phone. Again, I believe Apple choose to keep their GM's strong on the phone by minimizing case and screen changes.

Hopefully next year is similar to the laptop redesign in late 2008. I would love an iPhone Pro!

I agree with you about the screen. I knew it probably would not happen, but I was praying they included an OLED.

I am happy they didn't redo the size/width of the phone, because I have a 2nd gen iPod touch and my hands cramp up when typing for a few mins. For me, it is almost too thin.

Maybe the margarine-oops-oleio-phobic finish will reduce the slickness/slippage.

I dont think the phone needed to be thinner, but just slightly easier to hold.
I also hope the 'phobic' screen is better and of course general build quality of the phone!! That said, im still buying it because thats what I do haha :)

It's a solid refresh. Way faster CPU, double the storage capacity, 50% higher resolution camera with autofocus and tap to focus, video recording at 30fps, built-in compass, voice control, accessibility options, OpenGL ES 2.0, video trimming, battery percentage indicator, better battery life, oil and water resistant finish.

And that's not even mentioning all of the improvements they've made to the iPhone OS with 3.0 - improvements from which everyone will benefit. I'd say Apple has done a fantastic job this year.

I pre-ordered my 32GB black iPhone 3G S and my total cost was $556. After having sold my white iPhone 3G for $450, I'd say that getting all of those improvements for $106 is an excellent deal and well worth the money.
Agreed, 120%. Its a solid refresh.

Let me say my same reasoning I said previously to the other people complaining: the PowerBook G4 and Macbook Pro classic look almost identical despite vastly different guts. They run the same OS, but perform differently. Thats like the 3G and 3G S. Apple doesn't need to give its customers a visual refresh on every iteration.

And no, we won't see a new one in 6 months. Why does Apple need to change the look of the iPhone every year???? Give me a good reason. And OLED is being cried for yet I'm sure most of the people wanting it have no idea why they want it, besides the fact that its the latest buzzword.

I, for one, am actually kind of glad there were very minor updates. It has made me not so eager to go out and replace my perfectly fine 3g before I'm eligible for an upgrade discount. Now I can wait and when the next generation iPhone comes out I will get a discount and hopefully have an even more improved piece of hardware.

At the same time though, the rush even just on this message board to get a 3gs is pretty impressive so way to go Apple.

Edit: Having 32gb is still very tempting however.

...They probably could have included OLED and other elements but they won't bring out a revolutionary device every year ... i think they'll work on a 2 year cycle of Major-Minor releases ... this year it was minor

That means this year is a major release and last year's 3G was a minor release. I agree with you to some degree. To the general public the 3G will seem like more of a major change, feels like going from Dialup to DSL, but as far as the actual hardware this is a more major change.

whatever apple do, some of you will always moan that it's not enough.

it's too this, it's not that, it won't do the other.....boo hoo

there is no way for apple to make a phone that will please everyone, as soon as you realise that you can get on with your lives instead of crying because your phone won't take the dog for a walk.

get over it. it's updated. it's called 3gs. that's it for this year.

go outside and get some fresh air, all that stale air in your bedroom is turning you into miserable b*stards.

lol, here we go again with another one of these "the 3GS is not a major upgrade" thread. Give me a break dude. It seems the only ones that don't think this is major upgrade are the ones who are stuck in a 3G contract, forced to by double the price. ROFL.

Faster CPU, Faster GPU, more RAM, more Capacity, better Camera with functions, Compass, Voice Control, better 3G chip.

....ya, that's not a major upgrade:rolleyes:

Also don't forget longer battery life :)

All this boils down to is looks. Thats it. If they had added the matte back, all you complainers would be calling the 3G S the greatest iPhone evah!!!!!!1!!!one! But they didn't add the matte, so suddenly Apple only released a minor revision, and some of you fools are even expecting a new phone in 6 months, then what, yet ANOTHER in 6 more months? A new appearance does not make the phone any more functional than the current look!

Good grief people, so many of you need to grow up.

I am having a hard time understanding what peoples complaints about the 3GS are. It looks like a fantastic upgrade to me. Also I don't understand the complaints about upgrades. AT&T is just treating the iPhone like it does all other phones it sells. All the other carriers do the same time. I remember when I was on Sprint how whenever they would come out with a new Treo, I'd always have to wait a year until my contract expired or I had to pay a huge price difference. Sometimes I think your average iPhone user has no experience in dealing with other Smartphones and some how feel that since they are an iPhone user they should be treated special. I checked my upgrade status yesterday and I'm eligible to upgrade next March. I will just wait until then.

what you mean battery percentage indicator? also the better battery life doesn't make sense, so its better battery for everything except 3g talk!

The S is a good upgrade product at a good time for Apple and AT&T Wireless in North America. Consider that other makers and carriers have had a year since the 3G to tweak their products like Android, Palm, Windows Mobile, not to mention the current Qualcomm mobile processors. It makes sense that Apple put the "S" out there to not just attract new customers (including the entry level 3G), but to keep the existing base dialed in as well.

If Apple were to release another [major] update in the next few months (which I don't for a moment think they will), they would practically have an uprising on their hands from every deluded expectant nitwit out there.

Remember the price drop fiasco on the orignal iPhone? It would be that, but so so much worse. There's already enough people throwing around the word "historic" with regards to the contract, if they changed the update schedule too . . .

For what it's worth, it seems totally unlikely to me too.

i think they'll work on a 2 year cycle of Major-Minor releases ... this year it was minor

My thoughts exactly!
They'll catch the people coming out of their contracts every 2 years. And every year in between they'll try to get some people to upgrade by added features that really should have been in the prior generation And they'll definitely get a lot of new people on contracts who where holding off 'till those features came.

Some of you really need to think. Not everyone started their contract at the same time and this year is not a minor update if you actually think about it.

If that is true, assuming that IS true, then, people who enter into a 2-year contract this summer will forever upgrade to the minor-upgrade version iPhone every 2 year? Actually, I was concerned about this myself....

I'm honestly wondering what more can Apple add physically to a phone. Seriously.

I feel bad for Apple next year, b/c besides possibly an OLED, camera flash, upgraded MP camera, processor & RAM, what honestly can they add?

In terms of features and physical attributes, there was a lot more added to the GS than the 3G iphone, so I struggle to understand any of these gripes.

You know, Apple put more changes into the 3G S than the did with the 3G. How was the 3G different from the first generation iPhone? 3G, new casing, and A-GPS. How is the 3G S different from the 3G? Video recording/editing, autofocus/auto-white balance/auto-exposure, enhanced 3G, faster CPU and GPU, double the RAM, double the flash capacities, Voice Control, oleophobic screen coating, 3.0 megapixel camera with a macro lens, and improved battery. If Apple changed the design of the phone, you probably wouldn't be complaining.

And I think it makes sense for them not to change the design of the iPhone 3G S. The only problem is it might cause confusion between the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S. But the point of the iPhone 3G S is not to get iPhone 3G users, it's to get the original iPhone users that didn't switch and to bring new customers to the iPhone. New users won't care about the device having the same design and it's still a new design the first generation iPhone users finally making the switch. When Apple is trying to keep iPhone 3G users, then they'll change the design of the phone. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple only brings major updates (they only added the oleophobic screen coating and the text on the back isn't dull like the iPhone 3G) to the casing/screen/bezel for every other update of the iPhone.
They're not trying to entice iPhone 3G users, yet. So there's no need to change the design of the iPhone. They're trying to keep original iPhone users on the Apple train.
