You know, Apple put more changes into the 3G S than the did with the 3G. How was the 3G different from the first generation iPhone? 3G, new casing, and A-GPS. How is the 3G S different from the 3G? Video recording/editing, autofocus/auto-white balance/auto-exposure, enhanced 3G, faster CPU and GPU, double the RAM, double the flash capacities, Voice Control, oleophobic screen coating, 3.0 megapixel camera with a macro lens, and improved battery. If Apple changed the design of the phone, you probably wouldn't be complaining.

Exactly. The people complaining can only see skin deep. If it looks the same, then its not new to them. Terrible reasoning. To those people, only a different external appearance constitutes a major revision. There could be a nuclear power generator inside but that would only be 'minor' if it looked the same on the outside.

I feel bad for Apple next year, b/c besides possibly an OLED, camera flash, upgraded MP camera, processor & RAM, what honestly can they add?

A new case design will make everyone happy, of course. That's like worrying about what could they possibly add to the next macbook. Technology evolves and will take care of that.

I thought about this too. And, I do believe it's still APPLE's mistake not to change the physical design of iPhone IF that's what it takes for people not to feel somehow cheated. APPLE should learn more on consumer psychology. Sometimes a simply prudence on the company's part can make a big difference in whole customer satisfaction.

somehow i think apple realizes that most of their buying public...the ones WHO WORK AND CAN AFFORD A NEW PHONE...arent immature enough to base their opinions on looks.

I think it was good to leave the overall shape the same because the accessory base is usable (think how the 2G doesn't have the powerslider/juicepack cases), but I think they could have done the whole Nano-chromatic thing.

The people here are a vocal minority. I doubt the average customer cares.

You'd think that the folks in Cupertino could have integrated clean nuclear cold fusion and real time universal language translation into the 3GS . . . ;)

I'm still waiting for next year when they really up the specs with the dual core ARM cortex A9, add more ram and a better graphics chip. Possibly even a new OLED HD screen.:D

Read the link on the front page to Anandtech's article about the power of the new chips .... we're now most likely way ahead of Nintendo DSi in terms of power and graphic capability and possibly getting up there with PSP

The CPU is 2x more powerful and GPU is at least 3.5x more powerful ... thats a good solid step up for 1 year

If you pretend the updates were done to a phone from another company, they come into perspective.

Software Update

Let's say an Android phone got copy & paste, MMS, parental guidance, background notification service, voice control. Most of that would be considered just coming up to par. And another part is adding unique features.

Personally, I'm impressed with the amount of effort Apple has put into catching up with their software base. All together, it was a very large update for the amount of time spent.

Hardware Update

Say that LG updated a phone with 3MP autofocus camera, video recording, HSPA, a compass, faster CPU and more RAM. All except the compass might be considered an expected (and almost minimal) update these days.

Heck, other phones are coming out with WVGA (800x480) AMOLED screens, 5-8 MP cameras with nice optics, 1 GHz cpus, and even HD video recording.

So basically, the iPhone 3G S is a solid contender, albeit not nearly top end in specs. Nothing wrong with that position as a jumping off point for the future.

But when you think about what Apple could do in next years update it pales in comparison.

Dual Core processor, OLED screen with HD resolutions, further upgraded ram and GPU. I'm sure that when those come about next year, we'll FINALLY get multitasking and background apps.

If they add everything this year, what more can they add in the upcoming years to entice new customers to buy the new one rather than the old one on ebay or craigslist?

I think with 3rd party apps, Apple has to completely design a new user interface.

And when you add that to the already amazing UI and currently unmatched App Store, you see why this iPhone will continue the success of the previous versions.

They also have to wait for the price of technology to come down so they can keep the devices at the same price. When it makes sense to add OLED, they'll add OLED.

iPhone is both hardware and software. Let's not neglect the software, without which the hardware is meaningless. iPhone OS 3.0 has 1000 new APIs that will manifest themselves in new features incorporated into apps and games. That's a significant body of work accomplished by Apple in the past few months.

I've been disappointed with past keynotes, but not this time. Keeping the same look and form factor puzzled me for only 20 minutes, then I completely got over it. All of my existing accessories will work with the new phone...thank goodness I don't have to reinvest in all those "ecosystem" gadgets.

lol, here we go again with another one of these "the 3GS is not a major upgrade" thread. Give me a break dude. It seems the only ones that don't think this is major upgrade are the ones who are stuck in a 3G contract, forced to by double the price. ROFL.

Faster CPU, Faster GPU, more RAM, more Capacity, better Camera with functions, Compass, Voice Control, better 3G chip.

....ya, that's not a major upgrade:rolleyes:

Exactly.

I think the root of most of the casing complaints is that people need it to be recognizably "NEW" to everyone else who sees it. However it doesnt matter because most other consumers looking at the phone from a distance either (a) cant tell the difference and (b) dont care. LOL

I agree 100%. The additional features added to 3.0 as well as a greatly enhanced SDK are, in my opinion, the most significant part of this update. The hardware updates down to the 3GS will enhance what can now be done with the SDK.

I cant wait to use 3.0 Im just afraid of using dev builds, even if GM. I want to be 100% sure I can update in the future. LOL i know, im paranoid. They shouldve just released it Monday LOL:cool:

Major update, just not major enough for me.

I think its a major upgrade. Has any other Apple product every jumped in Specs as much as this Iphone? I just bought a GlassBook Pro. If they would have doubled the Processor/Ram/Hard drive/web cam/and other software improvements like the Iphone got, how insane would that be? I consider my laptop a big improvement over the non-alum pros with the 8600, and it certainly didnt double in specs.

Im not upgrading from my 3g because I think I understand Apple's plan and am assuming a bigger jump is coming next year(every two years) and dont want to be stuck paying another 700 again next year.

I think people are pissed not because of the 500 dollar early upgrade cost, but because the new phone isnt worth the money for the upgrade. They "NEED" the newest apple Iphone but the "logical" part of their brain is saying the upgrade is not worth that price, heads are gonna start exploding.....

I was initially disappointed when the design was unchanged, but then I had an epiphany regarding the iPhone. I had the 3g for 3 months and sold it in anticipation of the summer release of the new model. So now I have been iPhone free for 6 weeks, and have come to apreciate what an amazing device the iPhone is! I have been using an iPhone clone since, and am beside myself anticipating the new iPhone.

Everthing about the iphone 3g design is as perfect as could be. I realize now that the 3g really didn't need improving, and that everything they have added improves a device that is as perfect any consumer electronics device has ever hoped to be.
a matte case would be ok, higher res screen, better battery, sure these things would be swell, but compared to evrryhing else, there's no comparison!
