The best of the best iPhone apps

10. TomTom

One of the hottest iPhone apps hasn't even been released. At the Apple World Wide Developer's Conference last month, the company allowed several third-party developers to show off what they had already developed for the new iPhone 3GS device.

One of those developers was GPS solutions manufacturer TomTom. The company's turn-by-turn GPS software will come to the iPhone in the coming weeks, while the accompanying "car kit" will enhance the GPS signal, play music over a car stereo and provide hands-free support.

This app will not be cheap. The car kit alone is expected to fetch over $100, while the TomTom app is likely to include over 1GB of download, indicating an expensive buy. But if you've ever played with a TomTom GPS unit, you'll know the iPhone app will likely be worth the price.

I just realized that's SmartCompany (Australia) so that $100 isn't exactly $100. At the current exchange rate that would be $82. Much better. ;)

Tom Tom is too late for my $$$ :p

I just bought, downloaded, installed and tested the Navigon app (all inside of 45 minutes). Working great for me around the DFW area.

Will do a 5 hour road trip to Nowhere Texas tomorrow (a rural road with a rural address in a no name town), will see how that goes....

Sorry TT!

If I didn't already have a TomTom unit and wasn't already familiar with the their software, I wouldn't be waiting around for them.

I'm giving them a few more weeks to at least give a hint on when it might really come out. If they still haven't released it, I'm going to pick something else up.

What concerns me about the first article is the quote that the cradle will be available through all of TomTom's usual retail channels and hopefully will include Apple stores. Hopefully? Shouldn't all of that be set in stone by now? The CEO of the company is saying things aren't worked out with Apple to sell their products? That's comforting.

TomTom sure is taking their time with this one.

The app and the car cradle were mentioned briefly at their Q2 results conference call the other day, according to this article:

Speaking in a conference call announcing the latest financial reports TomTom CEO Harold Goddijn said: "The launch planned for the iPhone this summer is on track."

TomTom's car cradle for the iPhone will be available via all the usual channels, with the TomTom boss adding "hopefully that will include Apple stores."

I've already got Sygic's Mobile Maps app (and have had very good results with it) and will try Navigon's next. I think TomTom is really losing out by being one of the last to market in this space.

I got interested by Navigon so i downloaded it a few weeks ago.

So far im quite impressed with it. Compared to tomtom, well its different howerver its very useable as a sat nav system.

I particulaly like the image you get coming up to junctions on motorways, gives you a very clear indication of the lane you should be in.

As for when TomTom comes out, well its going to have to be fairly priced to make an impact.

sigh, few days away from August, Navigon's app is already out. I wonder if their demo at WWDC will really uphold to the consumers' standards.

I too gave up waiting for TomTom to come out, and downloaded the Navigon app. Seems pretty good but it hasn't been used in anger yet on a long and convoluted drive.

My gut feel is that they are waiting for OS3.1 to come out, there may be something in there that facilitates a better experience. I have no foundation for thinking this, it's just a gut feeling.

And I bet it's going to cost something just above Navigon, justified by a more premium experience of satnav on the iPhone.

We'll have to wait and see! Roll on 'later' or 'late' this summer!

I wonder if that dock will let phones with cases on them click in without having to take the case off, if it doesn't, thats a mistake. I think the vast majority have cases or skins on their phone.....

Well, it looks like other iphone holders out there that do NOT handle cases or skins. I agree. It is a huge problem for me if I have to take my phone out of the case every time I want to use TomTom.

This has been brought up many times. I think you could confidently say that there would be the same problems associated with putting any iPhone with a case into any dock. If you make the dock connector more recessed through the use of a case then it won't make contact and won't dock properly. It's not rocket science. The only way it could even be feasible would be to have a case with a removable lower section but those still probably wouldn't work because the dock will still be designed for the iPhone shape and the top would have problems being retained. There are too many case thicknesses, shapes and sizes for them to make a dock that is compatible with all of them. I have an Agent 18 acrylic case. It's pretty thick. Do I expect it to work in the TomTom dock? Never. I can't use it in anything else with a dock. Why should this be different?

The way that dock works is it clips from the top, just make the 30 pin connector longer so that the case has the room to move farther down the connector, the actual connector will stop when it is all the way in the phone. Seems pretty simple to design to me.....

I've never seen the dock connecter any deeper than the standard Apple connector. That's a technical specification for the connector itself.

And, with the use of cases, what is it going to clip to? Cases have a variety of thicknesses and shapes. A case that "clips" to a silicone case would never be able to keep hold of my acrylic case. If you go to the picture of the mount it's just a simple edge. There's no adjustment there. If it has to be designed to accommodate the thickest case the smallest case or uncased iPhone would rattle around in it. If it allowed for the use of the Otter cases an uncased iPhone would fall out of the dock.

The Scosche Power Adapter I have to convert my Alpine head unit's Firewire power to USB power has a longer-than-normal dock head. It actually looks like it's not in the phone all the way even when it is.

And this is why you don't design device cradles.

Witness the Kensington Car Mount. Holds an iPhone, with or without case, by magical means of adjustable side holders. Wouldn't be too hard to imagine a version of the device with a minimal dock input on the bottom now, would it?

yeah, but that kensington mount is butt ugly compared to the beauty that tomtom displayed.

Totally agree with the earlier post that this is a 3.1 related delay. Just read 3.1 is looking at September, so I expect TOMTOM around the same time. Bummer, I'm going on a trip in two weeks and really wanted to use tomtom on it.

I mean, looking at this pic it seems to me it might accommodate some cases.

Unless that top clip is extremely flexible, I can't see how this will fit with any case, unless the phone is bare. This is a huge turn off for me. I with it was adjustable to work with a cased phone. I guess we won't know for sure until it's released, but I'm willing to guess it won't be case friendly. I'm also worried that the app will rely heavily on the extra GPS built into the mount, and making the GPS less accurate without it, sort of forcing you to buy this after you've spent money on the app, and feeling it's just not accurate enough.

But then again, I'm a pretty pessimistic person.

I'd just as soon get a standalone than pay $100+ for the app then more for the holder. I can stream BT through my car stereo so audio not an issue. I tried Navigator but found it lacking. It ends next week and I'll get Navigon if TomTom isn't out.

Insider info

have just come off the phone to friendly insider at TomTom, who said she absolutely cannot tell me that it will be available on iTunes app store within 2 weeks.
