its useless to simply say, "Vista is better" or "OSX is better".

I actually use Vista Home Premium... I'm going to trade this Dell my dad forcibly bought me for that new iMac...

I have to say Vista the program compatibility for Vista is disappointing, ZoneAlarm firewall crashed Vista couple times (it said it was Vista compatible).

The "widgets" on the side are very annoying in intrusive. The surprising think I found was w/ not many programs running (just Firefox opened) Vista takes about 1GB idle.

and Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't go directly to task manager which pisses me off even more when a program crashed.

Overall, the background in Vista is beautiful, beside that... Not much lol

I set up a new Vista PC for a relative a few months ago. It was a horrible, horrible experience.

SL

same me. it sucks and annoys more than ever. win2k/xp is bliss in comparison.
and all that's new is new errors that complement all the bs that never worked ever since they changed the name from M$ DOS to M$ WINDOS.

worst, their spotlight-clone is useless, you can still not search for files or text in files reliably on this os!

f*** that.

While MAC OS X is overall better in my opinion, Vista does beat MAC OS X in a few areas such as:

1) recycle bin. You can delete multiple things from multiple locations and if you ever need to undo those deletes you just click a button and voila they all go back to their orignal locations.

The trash bin in MAC OS X you gotta remember where the original location of the deleted file was and then drag and drop it there. Imagine you have lots of things in the trash bin and this becomes a chore.

2) Vista can support both DX 10 and OpenGL. There is no directx for mac.

3) Vista has the WPF for 3D windows and affects. Of course Leopord will have core animation soon.

The reality is, with EVERY release of Windows, Windows users will try to convince you that this release is really like Mac.

Windows users who have not used a Mac in the last 5-7 years have no idea, unfortunately (for them).

I haven't ever used a mac (unfortunately) and i see that Mac is way better. It's just that many people who use pcs choose to ignore the superiornessism of macs.

Try moving a file that's in use in Vista.

Ha. Yeah, I actually just realized this in OS X.

I moved everything over to my external, opened up Garageband, and it opened. I was actually surprised, having used Windows before, I would have had to track that file down. :(

This is my honest opinion about Vista, currently the UI is a bit better than OSX. I've been playing around with Vista for the past month or so and I must say that I kind of like the UI. Aero with its glass effects is not as overdone like I thought it would be. The nice fade in/out effects when windows/programs launch is a nice effect too. Different from OSX, not gaudy or too over-the-top but actually quite tastefully done. Alright, the praise ends there. What I hate about Vista though is just about everything else. The control panel is a mess, it was bad enough in XP but now its even more cluttered and you can't really find what you want. Contrast it to System Prefs which has a nice search bar on the top right-hand corner, even if you don't know exactly which Pref you're looking for you could always search and results come out instantaneously.

Vista's search thingy is ok IMO. Not better nor worse then Spotlight, though I still like Spotlight's implementation. UAC sucks so badly. I have a vid of it where you would not expect it at all. Seriously! Go see it here. As for app/hardware support its actually a bit worse than XP. Some apps don't run because they need administrator privileges and Vista by default doesn't run apps with admin status. Good in a way because its more secure but annoying. And drivers are still a problem. And some other small issues like my new Vista lappy won't talk to my LCD projector. It keeps on flickering, like WTF o_0! Both my MBP and my other XP computer have absolutely no problems with it. Only the Vista machine...

Apple for life!:apple:

In reading this forum one item that was mentioned was Vista is better than OSX because you can run games..... Well although I wish I had full game support im really not worried about playing games on my MAC in OSX you could always boot to XP using bootcamp.

I do wish they supported OPEN GL but they don't so I won't loose any sleep. I have DELL XPS 600 I use for gaming.

If you look at iPhoto vs what ever they call they call the picture viewer in Vista and iMovie they are missing the boat because Microsoft is doing just enough and not going the extra mile to make it a really good product.

Vista doesn't support RAW format processing enough said.

Security  Most users that get Vista are going to just allow everything because they don't understand what the screen is telling them anyway. So how is Vista more secure. It Isn't.

I saw some neat things Vista does but I haven't upgraded and don't plan to. The only reason I have vista loaded on my spare pc is my dad is running and Im techsupport for alot of friends and family.

I am new to OSX for really using it daily and it rocks. I will have Windows PC just because of the nature of my job but APPLE if they continue will gain more market share and hopefully force MicroShaft to step up.

I view Microsoft as being good for business environment and APPLE home use.

We can all agree that Vista looks pretty, but design is not how something looks, it's how it works.

OS X is also pretty, but in my experience the functionality and stability far surpasses Vista. Nothing is perfect and sometimes my machine will hang, Vista and XP have far more problems and errors than OS X.

Of course there is no Direct X for the Mac, it's a MS technology designed to keep people using the Windows and XBOX platforms.

WPF catches up with Quartz from 2001. MS have nothing to match Core Annimation yet.

I'll let you compare

Also highlights the issues of taste. the windows version reminds me of Xp and seem very tacky design. Where as iChat looks very classy.

I find it slow, irritating and ugly, personally.

I think it's important to remember that Microsoft really has no reputation for delivering an OS that runs well on transition hardware. As surreal as it is with the kind of power C2D provides, I'm still a wait and see on this. If you buy a Vista PC next year, or even perhaps this Christmas season, it won't be sooo bad.

1) recycle bin. You can delete multiple things from multiple locations and if you ever need to undo those deletes you just click a button and voila they all go back to their orignal locations.

I have always liked this idea. It'd be even nicer if you could have an option where it walked you through the files and where it was putting them back (perhaps until you hit a yes-to-all button) as you restore them.

That being said, Windows and OS X are both a set of design tradeoffs to me. I don't particularly think Vista looks clunky -- I think it's quite nice looking. I think, though, in terms of usability, it's an evolution of Microsoft thinking. So it uses gorgeous visual effects, but it uses them in a Microsoft way, which I personally find quite irritating. Likewise Beryl on Ubuntu is stunning visually, but in its case, I find that it's just visual masturbation. :(

You forgot that OSX has better quality apps and that OSX is easier to use. I have put some comments in the quote. They are in bold.

i noticed this was mentioned by several people, which, Im very sorry, can't be proved. what is exactly the "quality" you are talking about? looks good? which I agree, goes to UI as I listed, easy to use? more powerful? hardly true.

So, freedom = evil?
the idea of restraining two "non-mutual exclusive terms" to be "one or the other" is exactly the limitation of some mac users. there are free and non-evil OS out there.

to play game of words really help nothing in discussion.

No way

I have a compaq laptop with Vista and an HP with XP pro(company's computer.) Prior to the vista laptop I had a Mac Mini, which I sold. After having to reinstall the Vista system 3x, buying the requisite security software, and being told I'm not authorized to this and that.... I have come to the conclusion that OSx is the better system.
Also, I have an HP1012 laser printer, which installed with no problems on the Apple. However, on an HP computer the freaking thing always has error messages. Maybe it is all the hp crapware.

In a nutshell I'm selling the Vista laptop at a loss and buying another Mac.

I meant quality as in easy to use and often produced good results, (iLife compared to the programs bundled with Windows) But now that I think about it, that is an opinion.

this is the problem we all have when making judgments about an OS based on personal experience, while I agree that personal experience is the only way we come to our conclusion, but it is now obvious that single user can't be fair. of course, the more experience you have with all OSes, the better chance you have to be "fair".

and some of my "unfair" experience of (8 years win, 1 year OSX, 6 month Lin)is just opposite of yours:
I always install free AV apps like AVG or avast on windows machine, which works great and free

I have a HP 1020 laserjet, it works fine on a win/lin box, but its a pain in the a$$ to make it work with a OSX mac, and eventually, guess what, I still can't get it to work (I tried every possible solutions offered by google and here at MR, so do a search before you make any suggestions to me :D)

I have to pay to get a one-step DVD-to-4.5G iso ripping app under mac? while DVD-shrink (win)/K9copy(lin) are free. I do feel like to do what I do, under OSX, i need to pay more. which is, obviously, a personal experience, may or may not be true for all users. I would like to see more data about this tho.

I see tons of vista computers at work. I wont say it's not an improvement over XP or anything, but it definitely is still far behind OS X. The icons look like ****, their dashboard thing has icons that are too small to be comfortable, the animations pale in comparison to OS X's, and their included software has nothing on ilife.

I don't even own a mac yet, I use mac' a lot at college and I will be getting one within the next month as OSX is so far ahead of windows it's silly and simply from a productivity stand point you get so much more work done.

Vista imo, is a step back from xp. I just do not like it at all. IMO xp isn't all that bad. It isn't as good as osx, but its a fairly solid OS if you know how to take care of your PC. But Vista, god its awful. I mean some people think it is visually on par with OSX, I don't one bit I think its ugly. Really do not like the OS.

I think it's great when I'm working on a file in GarageBand and then I rename the file while the program is still running and using the file. All that happens is that the file name changes in the title bar of the GarageBand application. :D

This is coming from a soon to be Mac Convert....SWEET!
