Even if someone does want to go through the pain of installing Linux, or even buying a laptop that comes with Linux preinstalled, most of the apps are just not there -- no MS Office, no tax software, no Proton Drive, no Dropbox, etc. You're either reduced to working through a browser, explore altenative apps, or look at kludgy solutions like VMs.
This has been my experience using linux. I want to because of the performance of the OS, but software I need is not on there.

I've said this before, the job of an operating system is to run applications, if it fails to do that, then find one that does.

With that said, many of the apps you referenced as show stoppers, like MS office, Proton drive have other solutions.
Office software - Libra office or Only Office
Proton Drive/Dropbox - Use rclone to mount the drive.
Tax Software - not something I've looking into, so I can't say one way or another.

The excuse of lack of apps, doesn't really hold water as much as people think it does. Obviously, if you absolutely need a certain application and its not available on Linux, then you find an OS that it does work. I have proton software suite, and they've promised that a native app for linux for proton drive is inbound, but I've already configured rclone, my proton drive can be mounted just just like any other app.

Just did the Mar/26 update of windows 11 on the wife's older system (dell 13 inch laptop with 4405Y cpu/510gpu, 16 gb of ram and 1tb Sata SSD) and it is noticeably quicker and snappier than previously. I also removed all dell spyware off the system too, which helps speed things up.
