So the same two sets of pictures float around on the internet and we apparently have a fabricated "colorgate"

I mean there is no possible way those photos were altered. No way. It is on the internet, it has to be true!

Unreasonable take. If you're going to assume it's fake because it's posted online, then why be on the internet at all? And how many people should there be before the story is to be believed? Ten or a thousand? Assuming this is actually true, why isn't one case enough to show us that there may just possibly be a problem with the new devices, given that this has never happened before?

Or do we have prior stories of iphones changing color that were ultimately debunked? As far as I remember, no. This is why dismissing this makes no sense - given that this has never happened before, if someone thought about changing the color of the phone, why now? No one for some reason decided to do this throughout all these years of iphones being released? Do we think no one had the imagination to change the color or the photoshop abilities were insufficient?

Unreasonable response. Acting like it’s a proven situation because someone posted on the internet is kind of silly.

Please show me more impacted phones. As of now, it’s literally the same two sets of photos. There aren’t 1000’s being posted or for that matter even 100’s.

BTW, no, I don’t believe everything I see on the internet.

I'm not acting like it's a proven situation. I'm acting as if there's a very real possibility it's true so we're discussing it.
You missed the point.

If you're only going to engage in debates where something is proven to be true, then may as well quit the forum because anything you see may be photoshopped or people could simply be lying.

A “very real possibility” because there are two sets of photos. Got it.

You missed the point.

I’ll say it again. Show me more phones that are impacted versus the same sets of photos that have circulated the last two weeks. When that occurs, I’ll happily enter into a debate/discussion/dialogue/conversation.

You are 100% correct, why even entertain the dialogue when literally there is nothing more than the same set of photos. To me, a big waste of time and energy.

Reality is, people are looking for things to make the next “gate”.

Yes, I do take some things with a grain of salt that I see on the internet. I get you believe it because it’s posted, but I don’t.

Have a good one.

In that very reddit thread 3 or 4 more people have posted pictures of their phones with the same issue, one guy has it just on the plateau and a few others the entire phone

I don't know if this is real or fake, but it is suspicious that there haven't been similar reports here (with pics). However, I suspect that reddit's iphone subscriber base (well north of 4 million as of September) could be a lot larger that this macrumors forum, and so that might be why we're not seeing any reports here.

However, saying that this is either 100% real or 100% is not right. It's premature either way.

Hydrogen peroxide causing this issue that anodized aluminum changing color. Maybe use of some cleaning liquid or maybe hand sanitizer that contains h2o2.
I keep seeing this but what is it based on other than Apple’s documentation? has Apple or anyone else confirmed hydrogen peroxide was the cause?

It’s just really basic chemistry. One thing Apple haven’t take account is that people are using lots of hand sanitizer still after corona.

I use hand sanitizer and mine is fine. The pictures shows even distributed pink over the entire phone, people usually don’t hold their phone evenly all over.

To me it seems like the entire phone was wiped down with something, and it has got to be more than just hand sanitizer.

That this is even a topic of conversation proves just how cheap and fragile the finish is on such an expensive product. From the scratches on display models in the store to these examples of discoloration in real world use, it’s quite the phenomenon.

It also proves how compliant and quick to defend Apple its faithful followers are. To Apples credit they’ve worked long and hard to establish this much influence over their flock.

Plastics and foams can offgas chemicals, I wonder if such offgassing could have caused the color change too.

Really? It seems to be one of the most common colours for anodising, apart from black. A lot of amateur astronomy gear uses orange anodising.

Even my Olight torch is orange.

Red, tons of red in astronomy gear. I have plenty of it, and yes it fades to pink if left in the sun too much. I always cover mine when I leave it out and its even faded some but not to pink yet and took a longer time.

I'd also add that when anodizing fades it tends to just fade to a lighter color of it's self not actually change colors.

Is this happening on just the pro's or the maxes as well? Could be contamination on the production line.

It depends. Getting the right 'tone' is very hard.

I have several items that are anodized orange: climbing carabiners, pocket knifes, flashlights. The climbing gear and the knife have a specific orange matching the companies brand. There are in very harsh environments and are exposed to all kinds of different chemicals and sweat. I have never seen a discoloration.

So, so far we have:
  • Let's say a dozen (to be generous) separate reports of this happening out of the literally millions of phones sold at this point. May well be less based on the photo comparison above, but let's give it the benefit of the doubt.
  • No first-hand reports of this on MR.
  • Reddit mods deleting posts about this indicating reasonable suspicion that they are fake or otherwise break Reddit rules.
  • MR report that Apple are apparently replacing affected units with no questions asked.
Nothing to see here, move along.

In an way yes. However, my guess is that apple has this thin and silky feeling surface that may be particularly sensitive while the aluminum items i have feel more glossy and the color layer "feels" thick. So maybe it's not apple cutting corners or being cheap, it could be the silky feeling of the surface comes with a higher chance of scratching and discoloration.
